April 4, 2005 - CASPER ROCKIES PLACE FIRST PLAYER ON COLORADO ROSTER

Reliever Ryan Speier Becomes First Casper Rockies Alum to Make Big League Debut

Casper, WY - The Casper Rockies have their first Major Leaguer. The Colorado Rockies open their 2005 season today and relief pitcher, Ryan Speier is on the 25-man roster. The right-hander pitched for Casper in their inaugural 2001 season. Speier becomes the first former Casper Rockies player to make the Major Leagues.

Speier spent his first professional season in Casper after being signed as a non-drafted free agent in July, 2001. He compiled a 1-2 record with one save and a 3.16 ERA while appearing in 17 games, all out of the bullpen. Speier struck out 24 batters in 25.2 innings while holding Pioneer League hitters to a .196 batting average.

"Today is a special day for the Casper Rockies," said Danny Tetzlaff, Casper Rockies General Manager. "Ryan is the first of what should be many former Casper Rockies to make the Major Leagues. This just reinforces the fact that future big league players can be seen all summer long at Mike Lansing Field, right here in Casper."

After successful stops in Asheville (A) and Salem (A) in 2002, Speier began to make a name for himself in 2003 while a member of the Visalia Oaks (A). Despite not moving into the closer's role until mid-June, he went on to rank third in the California League with 18 saves. He finished the season with a 4-2 record and a 1.53 ERA while appearing in a team-high 56 games.

Speier had a career year in 2004 while a member of the Tulsa Drillers (AA) in the Texas League. He was named "Rolaids Relief Man of the Year" for all of Minor League baseball, the first pitcher in the Rockies organization's history to earn the honor. He set a Rockies Minor League record with 37 saves (in 40 chances - 93%). Speier also led all of Minor League baseball's relievers with a .153 opponent's batting average.

Come join the Casper Rockies as they celebrate their 5th Anniversary season in 2005. Season ticket packages are now on sale. Contact the Casper Rockies office (307) 232-1111 for ordering information.

He did well Monday! If there's any place the Rockies need help in a hurry, it's the pen. When I first saw his name on the roster, I was thinking the Rox had brought back Justin Speier, haha -

ya they do. I think this would be a very good team that could win the West if they had a good bullpen. I would have a ton of hope for them but no pen equals no win.....
