Several Twins were disappointed to hear that former teammate Michael Restovich had been designated for assignment by Tampa Bay. The Devil Rays needed a backup catcher, so they signed Charles Johnson. Restovich was claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay last Thursday.

The Twins were held to one run on five hits against Moyer, whose fastball topped out at 84 miles an hour, and three relievers. Radke gave up four earned runs over seven innings and paid for the two bad pitches he made to Sexson. After the second homer, Radke retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced.

Mauer picked up his first hit of the season with a leadoff single off Seattle's Jamie Moyer in the fourth inning Monday. He followed that up by stealing second base.

It was only the ninth steal of Mauer's professional career and it surprised Gardenhire a bit.

"He thought our first base coach (Jerry White) gave him the OK to go," Gardenhire said. "When he took off running, I went, 'Oh my.' But he was safe so it's an 'Oh my, good play.' At the time, it definitely wasn't a sign. Those are the things we'll work on as we go along."

Brad Radke couldn't handle Richie Sexson today and allowed five runs -- four earned -- in seven innings against the Mariners. Sexson's two homers accounted for all of the runs. Against everyone else, Radke was expectional. He gave up just three other hits and didn't walk a batter.
