Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics placed reigning
American League Rookie of the Year Bobby Crosby on the 15-day disabled list
prior to Wednesday's game at Baltimore because of a stress fracture located in
his ribs.
Crosby left Monday's Opening Day game in the fourth inning after complaining
of a sore back. An MRI taken on Tuesday's off day confirmed the fracture of
his ninth and 10th ribs.
The 25-year-old shortstop earned the AL's top rookie award last year after
batting .239 with 22 home runs and 64 RBI in 151 games. Marco Scutaro will
likely take over at short in Crosby's absence.
The Athletics also recalled righthanded pitcher Kirk Saarloos from Triple-A
Sacramento. Saarloos will start Wednesday's contest in place of the injured
Rich Harden, who will have his season debut pushed back to Sunday due to a
blister on his right middle finger.
