Juan Pierre did not start Saturday's 3-2, 10-inning loss to Washington, ending
a streak of 1,700 consecutive innings played.
The only player in Major League Baseball to participate in every inning of the
2004 season, Pierre also played every inning through the first four games of
2005. He came into Saturday's game 3-for-16 this season for a batting average
of .188.
Pierre has played in 300 consecutive games, a streak that remained intact as
Pierre entered Saturday's game in the eighth inning and went 1-for-2 with a
double.
Juan Encarnacion started in center field for Pierre on Saturday, going 1-for-5
with a run scored in the loss.
Also getting the day off was Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo. Damion
Easley was given the starting nod in place of Castillo, who is 2-for-14 (.143
average) so far this season. Easley finished 0-for-5.
