Joe Mays may have already made a relief appearance this season, but the pitcher's long road back from elbow surgery will culminate Tuesday night.
Mays will make his first start since Aug. 23, 2003, when the Twins open a three-game set vs. the Tigers. The right-hander had a partial ligament replacement operation Sept. 11, 2003, and spent all of 2004 on the disabled list recovering.
Expected to be the fifth starter and skipped until April 16 because of Minnesota's use of a four-man rotation to start the season, Mays was moved up after third starter Carlos Silva went down with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
In a three-inning relief appearance Friday vs. the White Sox, Mays gave up one run on three hits.

Player to watch
Matthew LeCroy, who has been filling in at first base for Justin Morneau lately, is a career .381 hitter (8-for-21) against Maroth with a home run and three RBIs. LeCroy is off to a good start this season, going 5-for-15 at the plate with one homer and four RBIs.

The Detroit Tigers hope to have Magglio Ordonez back in the lineup as they try and snap a six-game losing streak against the Minnesota Twins, when the teams open a three-game series.
Ordonez has missed four straight games with a viral infection, but hopes to play Tuesday.
"I do think he's feeling better," Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. "What might happen is Tuesday he comes out early, and if he would have a really good day, maybe there's a chance that he would play then."
Ordonez, one of baseball's best right-handed hitters, was limited to 52 games for the White Sox last year by knee problems.
Ordonez's presence in the lineup would help a Detroit team trying to end a slide against Minnesota. The Tigers' last win against the Twins was on July 11, 2-0 at Minnesota.
Ivan Rodriguez was retired with the tying run on first base in Detroit's 7-6 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.
The Tigers' second one-run loss in three days dropped them to .500. Detroit, though, has scored 17 runs in its last two games.
Minnesota's Joe Mays will make his first start since Aug. 23, 2003. The right-hander missed all of last season following reconstructive elbow surgery. Mays gave up one run and three hits in two innings in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday in his first regular-season appearance since Aug. 31, 2003.
"He should be able to handle these things," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "As I told him, 'Take the ball and do the best you can. Throw it over.' He'll be fine. We told him that from the get-go and I'll reaffirm that before the game. Be yourself, just like spring training. Go at them and see what happens."
Mays has been outstanding against Detroit, going 10-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 15 starts and two relief appearances.
Mays will be trying to build on an outstanding performance from 2004 AL Cy Young award winner Johan Santana.
After watching teammates Kyle Lohse and Brad Radke get roughed up in consecutive losses to the White Sox, Santana stopped the skid with 11 strikeouts in seven innings to help Minnesota avoid getting swept by its division rivals with a 5-2 victory Sunday.
The Twins' starters have struggled early on - even Santana gave up four runs in the first inning of his previous start, an 8-4 win at Seattle. The Twins have been outscored 11-0 in the first inning this season.
Minnesota is in the middle of 19 straight games against AL Central opponents.

The left-hander struggled in his first start, allowing five runs and 11 hits in 3 2-3 innings in a 7-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Maroth set career highs in wins (11-13), innings (217), ERA (4.31) and strikeouts (108) last season. He is 2-7 with a 4.54 ERA in 11 starts against Minnesota.
TWINS PROBABLE STARTER: Mays (0-0, 4.50 ERA). Mays is 42-55 with a 4.69 ERA in his career. He went 17-13 with a 3.16 ERA for the Twins in 2001.

Detroit Tigers first baseman Dmitri Young won't see the Twins until Tuesday's series opener at the Metrodome. But after Detroit finished its series with the Indians on Sunday, Young has apparently seen enough to make some predictions about the outcome of AL Central.
"This is our rival right here," Young said of Cleveland. "Forget the other teams. I think it's going to come down to us and them. Just look at the different positions, look at the matchups. The matchups are pretty similar."
The Twins have won the last three division titles and are many experts' pick to take a fourth-straight championship. When a reporter asked him about Minnesota, Young shrugged.
"Us and Cleveland," he said.

The Tigers come to the Dome tonight for a three-game series. It's their first visit to Minneapolis this year and it's the first series of the year between both clubs.
This is a good series. A good barometer for both teams. I know the Tigers want this series badly, but the Twins need it too. They can't fall behind the eight-hole early in the AL Central standings. This month is a very important month for the Twins. I would like to see them in first place by the end of the month.
Joe Mays starts for the Twins. He is replacing Silva who is out for awhile beacuse of a torn cartilege. This is a big start for him. The Twins need him more than ever if they want to win the division. He was known as a wild card that could make them a great team. Well now he is an important cog of this rotation. Twins need him to perform if they want to win the division for the fourth straight year. He has to be very good. I really hope he does well. I am crossing my fingers.
As for Dimitri Young, him talking trash it's funny. You would think the players on this team would just be quiet and get the job done. After almost breaking the 1962 Mets record for most losses couple of years ago, why Dimitri Young of all people is talking. I know he is banking on the losses of the infield players as the Twins demise, but he should know better about how the Twins has found a way to replace players. Maybe the Twins can prove something to him in this series.
Maroth vs. Mays
I will be on for gamethread chat tonight if anyone is interested.

curt: Watching Joe and Kyle pitch is very scary to watch. I keep waiting for them to implode and you know the other team is too. As for White Sox fans, let them enjoy this series. It's rare that they have anything to enjoy in the futile history of their franchise so they need to enjoy those baby steps.

He did alright. It would have been nice to have the Tigers not score. Joe struck out Ordonez, but he could not get that big mouth, Dimitri Young out as he got a single to drive in the Tigers first run.
Tigers offense is pretty good. Anytime you got Dimitri Young next in the lineup after Ordonez, that's pretty good.

Tanana had some decent years with Detroit.
I remember him when he came up with California. He had Nolan Ryan heat in the mid-70s,and him and Ryan were probably the most feared 1-2 punch in the AL at that time. But major elbow surgery in the late 70s-early 80s ended his flamethrowing days, and he became a finesse pitcher.

I am with you Les. You got to send Joe on that. Let your team win it in the bottom of the 9th.

lol, i find myself too lazy (or tired, or maybe just too dysfunctional) to leaf through all 8 pages of the thread but I just wanted to comment on the great victory tonight and to ask a question thats been burnin on my mind hotter than a grass fire in the 1880's.
Who thinks the AL Central will produce the best baseball this year?
I think so. How about you?

I want to thank Durango, Curt, TWolves, Chisox, and everyone who participated tonight in this thread. I had a great time. We should do it again.
Great game and a great win for the good guys tonight. Twins won in a thrilling fashion tonight in the ninth inning thanks to Shannon's GW big hit in centerfield as Lew scored for the Twins 5-4 win tonight. This was a very good win. You want to get something going in the division and it was a good statement tonight. To win back-to-back is very good.
This situation in the ninth would not have happened without the eighth inning. Twins were able to get some hits and walks thanks to Tigers setup guy Ugueth Urbina. Urbina was wild. He was throwing all over the place and he was throwing all balls out there. He just did not have it and the Twins were able to get some big hits. They did a good job making Urbina work and throw lot of pitches. It was a great approach that they did.
I know everyone will second-guess Joe Mauer running third to home on a wild pitch as he was out to end the threat in the eighth, but I am glad he did. He had a shot to be safe and it looked like he had a chance, but he was out. Give credit to Pudge Rodriguez for finding a way to retreive the ball and get to the home plate. You gotta take risk and I am glad Joe did. It's too bad that it did not work out. If he had to do it again, I would want him to do it again.
As frustrating as the offense was against Maroth, they never gave up and they found a way to get the big hits late in the game especially against the Tigers setup guy and the Tigers closer who has owned the Twins when he was the Angels closer in Troy Percival. Obviously, Trammell was going with Percival in the ninth in a tie game based on his track record against the Twins. That plan backfired. I am just glad they got a hit off Troy.
I thought Jason Bartlett and Michael Cuddyer had a very good game. Yeah they struggled in the beginning of this game, but they both came through with big HRs. They also were great defensively tonight. I think those two will get better defensively as the season progresses.
Speaking of Jason, he has done a very good job. He has been the Twins consistent hitter so far. He has done more than what Cristian has done offensively combined in the last two years.
Torii was solid tonight. I think that hit on Saturday will springboard to a very good season for him.
Joe Mauer has a lot of value to this team. One of his big values to the team is his on-base percentage. I swear he is always on base a lot. He finds a way to get there. That makes the Twins a better team for it.
I was very satisfied with our offense overall.
Joe Mays did a good job tonight. Yes, he gave up couple of homeruns, but overall he kept the team in the game and he gave the Twins a chance to tie it. He threw strikes. He got out of jams when he was in a jam. He found a way to get out of it. Joe is not going to be the guy he used to be in 2001 ever again. If he can be servicable and productive, that's good enough. A sign of a good pitcher is to get out of jams and that's what Joe is exactly done. I did not think he was that bad. A bad performance would be giving up hits like a drum or caving in when the going got tough. Joe never did that. He did a good job. Gardenhire and Rick Anderson was pleased with what Joe did out there. Joe can feel good about himself.
The pen did a great job. I thought Terry Mullholland was very good out there. He is going to be a huge part of our pen and I am glad Gardenhire put him in a tie game than a mopup game tonight. This is something Terry needed and I am glad he did a good job. Jesse did okay. I like what J.C. has done so far. He is on a groove. He was huge with his 4 Ks tonight. He give the Twins a chance for them to tie the game at 4. He could have put the game away, but tonight he was huge. Juan was huge.
A very good win tonight. Twins showed some character out there tonight in coming through with a big base hit after struggling in the first few innings. Joe Mays showed me something. The pen was huge.
Good job by the Twins.
LesPaul: I think AL Central will produce the best baseball this year. The division has improved and I think KC will be a pest too.

Terry Mulholland looks so old.
The AL Central is probably the most even division in terms of talent, so there will be a lot of good games in it.

I think the NL West will be the best Div. I mean man who can blow a save better than the Rox!!!! :D
But no one should second guess anyone on sending Joe home. Home park still have one inning to go it will take a strike and a great play to get him out and all those happened. I would send him 100 out of a 100 times. Play for the tie right then so you can bring Nathen in to hold it and go for the win in the bottom of the ninth. Easier to get one run instead of two which they did.
Great game by Mays. First start in a couple of years I think and had some nerves but had a solid start. Nice to see him rounding back and becoming that pitcher the Twins thought he would be. Is there a better judge of talent in MLB than the Twins? But the HR he did give up wasnt a grand slam or a 2 guys on base. Those are the ones that kill you. He nutted up when he had to and to bad he didnt get the win but he did what a starter has to do and that is keep your team in the game.
Cant wait for the game tonight!!!!!

Great finish by the twins last night. That hit by Staurt was great. The Tigers can see there AL Central Division Champion banner fading away already.

TM make look old, but this guy can flat-out pitch. He is a leader in the clubhouse. I love watching him and I am glad he is on my team.
I agree that AL Central showdowns will be very good as I told Chisox.

You are not kidding. Uggie was all over the place last night. He threw lot of balls and the hitters sense it so they made him throw. He was wild. He is lucky that wild pitch did not cost him because if Mauer scored, he gets the loss.
I know Troy Percival was asked lot of questions for this loss yesterday, but Urbina was the big reason why the Tigers lost not Troy as you mentioned.

I don't hate the Tigers and I doubt anyone does. I rather see them win the division if the Twins don't win it. My hatred is more with the White Sox and Indians since those two teams have history with the Twins.
We are just having fun with Dimitri Young's expense. He was dumb enough to rip the Twins the other day so he deserve what he is getting. I am dissapointed that FSN Detroit did not show his face after Shannon got the hit. I wanted to see his reaction.
Tonight's game is not on TV in Minnesota. FSN North has the meaningless Timberwolves/Warriors game. Timberwolves season is done so who cares about the game. I have no idea why it's not on FSN North. Timberwolves could have been aired on KSTC-TV and the Twins could have been on FSN North tonight. I did not get this one.
