GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (6-6) at Colorado Rockies (2-9).
TIME: Monday, 8:35 p.m. EDT.
Brandon Webb appears to be returning to form for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Webb seeks a third straight win to start the season when the Diamondbacks travel to Coors Field for the opener of a two-game series with the Colorado Rockies.
In his rookie season in 2003, Webb went 10-9 with a 2.84 ERA to become the No. 2 starter behind Randy Johnson the next season. But Webb slipped to 7-16 with a 3.59 ERA in 2004 and was also hurt by allowing 28 unearned runs as a result of the Diamondbacks' poor defense, which led the NL with 139 errors.
In two starts this season, Webb has been sharp. He improved to 2-0 last Tuesday by surrendering only two runs and eight hits in eight innings of a 4-2 win over Colorado.
"Defense is a big savior for me," Webb said. "I'm supposed to get a lot of groundballs, and I did tonight. Our defense has been tremendous all year."
Webb is 4-3 with a 3.44 ERA in eight career starts against the Rockies. He is 1-3 with a 4.08 ERA in five outings at Coors Field.
Arizona is trying to end a three-game losing streak after it was swept in a weekend series at Washington. The Diamondbacks were unable to hold a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning of a 7-3 loss Sunday.
Managing only three runs in each game of the series, Arizona has failed to score in 24 of its last 27 innings.
Colorado will start Shawn Chacon for the second straight game against Webb. Chacon did not receive a decision last Tuesday after allowing one run and six hits in six innings.
This will be the first start at home for Chacon since Aug. 10, 2003 after spending last season in the bullpen. Chacon went 7-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 12 home starts in 2003.
The Rockies are off to the worst start in team history after an 8-6 loss to San Francisco on Sunday. Jeff Baker went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead a 13-hit attack.
