The Twins are running out of superlatives to describe Johan Santana, who hasn't experienced defeat in 9 1/2 months.
"He's incredible," said outfielder Lew Ford.
"He's unbelievable," said manager Ron Gardenhire.
With little margin for error, Santana won his 17th consecutive game on Tuesday as the Twins nipped Kansas City, 2-1, at Kauffman Stadium. Santana allowed just one run on five hits through eight innings and then got a win instead of a no-decision when Ford snapped a tie in the ninth with a bloop RBI single just over the outstretched glove of Royals' second baseman Tony Graffanino.
Santana's 17-game winning streak, dating back to July 17, 2004, has put him in elite company. The American League record is held by Roger Clemens, who won 20 straight from June 3, 1998 to June 1, 1999. Carl Hubbell holds the Major League record with 24 straight wins, from July 17, 1936 to May 27, 1937.
