The Rockies shook up their bullpen on Thursday, sending rookie right-handers Scott Dohmann and Ryan Speier to Colorado Springs and calling up veteran righty Jay Witasick.
One reason the Rockies went 2-for-1 in the reliever exchange was the performance of outfielder Michael Restovich, who has batted .346 with a home run and three RBIs since being claimed on waivers from Tampa Bay (which had just claimed him from Minnesota).
The Rockies feared that when Mohr returned, they'd have to put Restovich, who is out of Minor League options, on waivers and hope he wasn't claimed. But Restovich did enough -- and the pitchers struggled so mightily -- that he warranted keeping.
"We want to keep our hands on Restovich as long as we can before we have to do something," Hurdle said. "He's played well. He definitely can go get the ball in the outfield. He's probably got a left fielder's throwing arm. Offensively, we've been able to scratch a little bit out of him. We think there's more there."
Restovich didn't stick in several trials with the Twins. He hopes sticking with the Rockies now is a sign that his career is taking off, but he's not taking that for granted.
"Whether I've bought myself another week, month or day, I don't know," Restovich said. "Obviously, you feel bad for the guys that were sent down, but I'm excited to continue to get a chance and get another opportunity to keep proving myself."
Restovich also gets to stick around with Mohr. They became close friends with Minnesota. Mohr was part of Restovich's wedding.
Also sticking around on merit is backup outfielder Cory Sullivan, who has batted .400 (10-for-25) in 14 games that include five starts in center when Wilson has rested. If the Rockies were looking to stay at 12 pitchers and make an easy, if unfair, move without exposing Restovich, they could have optioned Sullivan to the Minors.
"I can't see sending Cory Sullivan out just because he's got options," Hurdle said. "He's done nothing to warrant being moved."
I am glad to see Cory and Mike sticking around. I dont know why the Rox signed Mohr. I do like the guy but he just isnt a fit for this team right now. Who knows they might be able to trade him in a couple of months to a team needing a OF and a playoff push. :notme:
