By Bill Chastain / MLB.com
ST. PETERSBURG -- The Devil Rays scored early and often in defeating the Yankees 11-4 in front of an announced crowd of 14,824 Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
The Devil Rays jumped on Yankees starter Kevin Brown in the first inning, sending 11 men to the plate. Every hitter in the lineup other than Aubrey Huff had a base hit.
Julio Lugo, Huff, Josh Phelps and Alex Gonzalez all had RBIs in the first, while Nick Green had two to give Rays starter Doug Waechter a 6-0 lead.
By scoring six in the first, the Rays tied a club record for most runs scored in the first inning, which the team had accomplished once in the past, also against the Yankees, on May 15, 2002, at Yankee Stadium.
Tino Martinez got the Yankees on the board with his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the third, but the Rays added two more in the fourth on RBIs by Huff and Phelps to make it 8-1.
