SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds had a third operation on his injured right knee, the latest setback in the slugger's rehabilitation, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Bonds underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday in Southern California as doctors tried to clean out an infection, the Chronicle reported on its Web site Tuesday night. Bonds already had operations on the knee Jan. 31 and March 17 to remove damaged cartilage.

The San Francisco Giants have stopped giving medical updates on Bonds and his agent would not confirm that Bonds had the operation.

``The only comment I have about Barry is that the day his knee is healthy, he will be back on the field in uniform,'' Jeff Borris said.

Bonds has been giving his medical updates on his personal Web site, where he wrote in his last entry on Sunday that Angels team orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum drained the knee of fluid last week to ensure ``there isn't any infection and that I'm healing properly.''

The Chronicle, which did not cite the source of its report, said the knee was infected and the latest operation flushed out the infection using fluids and antibiotics. The paper said Bonds would take antibiotics for at least two weeks and could not resume his rehab until doctors are assured the infection is gone.

That will likely delay Bonds' return and the resumption of his quest for baseball's career home run record even longer. In an outburst during spring training, Bonds said he might not be back for at least half the season, maybe the whole season.

The 40-year-old Bonds has 703 career home runs, 11 behind Babe Ruth and 52 from tying Hank Aaron's career record. Bonds batted .362 last season with 45 homers and 101 RBIs and also walked a major league-record 232 times on the way to his record seventh MVP award.

This is just the third time in his career he's gone on the disabled list and the first since April 18 to June 9, 1999, as he recovered from elbow surgery.

Bonds was also dogged by steroid allegations in the offseason. According to the Chronicle, Bonds testified to a grand jury in December 2003 that he used a clear substance and a cream given to him by a trainer who was indicted in a steroid-distribution ring, but said he didn't know if they were steroids. Prosecutors believe the substances were two steroids at the center of the BALCO scandal.

I have problems with Bonds' behavior through all this. Listened to former players in Harold Reynolds and John Kruk on Baseball Tonite and I gotta agree with these guys. Bonds is running the Giants, he's the unofficial manager, general manager and owner and does what he wants. :nope: He is not setting a good example at all for other players and that is a team full of veterans.

I think the Giants could do themselves a favor and get rid of this guy.

BTW, I'm not so sure I believe this third sugery actually took place. The "ONLY" communication is thru his website? WHAT THE BLEEP IS THAT ABOUT? How can anyone be a fan of the Giants and this guy? He isn't a fan of his own team.

I really do feel bad for Giant fans and the Giants team. This guy is only hurting the team.

I'm still of the mind too, that Bonds is done. His knees are not holding up and I am very suspicious of this situation. No matter what his situation is with taking steroids or not, his upper body is being bulked up too much for the weight of his knees to handle. Remember McGwire and why he retired? His knees were badly injured. Remember how bulky he was? Again, if he were taking steroids or not, isn't the issue. The fact that the upper body is too big for the knees to handle the weight and the stress of the upper body workouts.

If they are/were taking steroids, that just adds to the percentage of serious injuries. And if that is the case with Bonds and this intense scrutiny by Congress, the media and MLB, maybe Bonds will come back later in the year. He has already stated that he is going to lose weight. He is preparing us for a much smaller (maybe sans steroids) body and I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't even close to the hitter he was. Again, if that is the case, he can always claim the knee problem. Funny how similiar this path is to McGwire's. :notme:

I don't trust what the website is saying. There's already alot of speculation of it just being propoganda to throw off the media.

talk about your convoluted conspiracy theories. I dont think this makes all that much of a difference in the long run anyways. it would supposedly only delay his reocvery time by a coupla weeks.

BTW, i do like barry. :)

Maybe it's a conspiracy theory, maybe not. Sorry, Ray, I just wonder about this guy's health.

I will say this, I hope what I am thinking is from outer space and I am completley off base here. So many kids look up to him, he has made baseball history and it would be a shame if he has done something he shouldn't have. I do hope I'm wrong.

I just have a bad feeling about all this...

Anyone who has ever had knee problems would know that this is definitely not out of the ordinary.
