Q: It's early, but the 2005 sleeper team will be ...
A: Why Wyoming? Why not?
A sleeper team is a team that, in my mind, flies below the national radar and grabs people's attention to a degree not expected during the season. In the Mountain West, the one program getting all the attention, and rightfully so, is Utah. But the Cowboys' huge Las Vegas Bowl victory over UCLA gives them an enormous boost heading into 2005, so much so that this team seems poised to exceed raw expectations and make a name for itself in a way that other power-conference teams can't.
I thought about Arizona State, but the offseason issues involving Loren Wade seem destined to cloud the Sun Devils' focus... and their fortunes.
I thought about Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders always exceed expectations under stellar coach Mike Leach, so labeling them a sleeper would be a discredit to that fine program.
I considered Virginia Tech without Bryan Randall, but for a program that has its prestige--and its groove--back, considering the Hokies a sleeper in a deep and tough league would seem to be a slap in the face to the defending ACC champions.
So, all in all, some teams exceed the sleeper categorization--they're too consistent or well-known to fly below the radar. A few teams show sleeper potential, but have issues that might get in the way.
Wyoming has the right mix of low profile yet positive intangibles that makes it as good a sleeper pick as any heading into 2005.
:yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: <---Everyone in Wyoming!!!!!
HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!! We have high hopes here in Wyoming but WOW!!!!!!!!
