The Minnesota Twins sent backup catcher Corky Miller outright to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday and recalled infielder Terry Tiffee to fill his roster spot.

The move signaled the Twins are confident catcher Joe Mauer's left knee has recovered from surgery, and they also need another reliable bat off the bench.

"You hate to see him go," Mauer said, "but hopefully Tiffee's bat will help us."

With Mauer, Mike Redmond, Miller and Matthew LeCroy - on an emergency basis - available, Minnesota had four players capable of catching. LeCroy is a reliable pinch hitter with good power, but Miller was hitless in 12 at-bats this season - and 1-for-55 in the majors since Sept. 19, 2003, when he played for Cincinnati.

"It's a little combination of everything," general manager Terry Ryan said. "If we didn't think Tiffee would contribute, we wouldn't do that."

Great move for the Twins.

It's about time.

With Nick starting at 2B, Terry is the Twins best pinch-hitter.
