He He! I think he has to be a lock with the spring he is having. Did it again today versus the Rays!
Not only is he a lock, he could be a starter. Rios has not looked good and may start the season on the DL. Bell looks worse and worse anytime he plays. also AB hasn't exactly been impressive. IMO Hermansen will be the big story for the Pirates.

He should be a lock. His average is close to .350 and his OBP is nearly .700.
I could see Hermansen starting, although it's not likely. If Rios is not ready, I fear Bell will be starting in rightfield. :ohno:

Wow, look at all the smiley faces at this site! 85?! Well, this is one of my favorite topics of late, so my first post here might as well be in this thread . . .
Bell shouldn't have a roster spot over any of those guys, but I'm worried that even if continues the way he has been playing they are going to have a spot for him. Or I should say Mac will have a spot for him. I'm sure Littlefield would love to drop this sorry bum.

Hey Rick.
I think Bell will have a spot too. I can see them eating Meares' contract, but I don't think McClatchy will eat both of them. However, if an insurance policy is worked out with Meares, then Bell may be cut.
I'm hoping Bell is cut because Hyzdu would likely take his place with the spring he is having, but I don't think it will happen.

Hyzdu deserves a chance. These guys must have it in for him for some reason.
Meares should definitely be cut or something, but you're right, if they work out an insurance thing, Bell should be out of town too. I mentioned over at HB that if Young continues this into the season, maybe there's a chance we could trade him and get rid of that 6 million. It sure would go a long way towards getting some pitching or just signing some extensions for guys like ARam.

If Young continues this, I think we will have to see where other teams are at and what they would give us. If Giambi breaks a leg or something in June (horrible situation, right?), the Yankees might overpay to get him. But if every team has their starting firstbaseman, not many teams would take him on or give us much. A lot will also depend where Craig Wilson is at. If he is anything close to last season, losing Young makes it more feasible.
This will be the only time all season the Pirates will hold the cards. If KY keeps this up, great. We get excellent defense and a decent bat. Then he can be traded or kept, either way it's a no lose situation. If he doesn't keep this up, well, he hasn't had a decent bat for three seasons. But he'd still give excellent defense, and maybe offense is worth sacrificing for defense if you have Jack Flash, Pokey, and KY.

Maybe, maybe. I already have a candidate in mind for KY though. How about the Atlanta Braves? They could definitely use the help if he keeps hitting, and with his defense, a big market team like that won't mind his age.
It would be nice to get a good prospect or two for him, but I would almost settle (depending on well he is playing) for getting rid of his salary. I really like him, but we have to get more power and get a little younger at that position.
And I really like Craig.

You're right about Atlanta. With the Mets probably challenging them for the division, Atlanta sure could use a solid first baseman. If they can get that, I think they'll beat out the Mets.
At this point, if the Pirates can get a AA prospect and pay one or two million of his salary, I think they have to consider it.
