Chico Carrasquel (baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=carrach01) ,popular White sox shortstop of the early 1950s,passed away this afternoon from cardiac arrest on his way to a hospital in Caracas,Venezuela. He was 77.
Carrasquel was the 1st Latin-American player to appear in an All-Star Game.He was in the major leagues from 1950-59.He was a 4 time All-Star with the White Sox,teaming with Nellie Fox to form one of the best double play combinations in baseball in the 50s.
In 1951,he appeared in his 1st All-Star Game in Detroit, where he got a hit in his 1st at-bat off future HOFer Robin Roberts.
He replaced legendary shortstop Luke Appling in his rookie year of 1950,and had a 24-game hitting streak that season. After the 1955 season,he was traded to the Cleveland Indians for Larry Doby. That trade opened up room for his successor, another Venezuelan shortstop,Luis Aparicio.
Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and all the fans who got to see him play.
