Nashville Sounds pitcher Rick Helling was impaled by a broken bat during last night's game against the New Orleans Zephyrs.
In the 7th inning with Helling on the mound,Craig Kuzmic fouled off a pitch,shttering his bat in about 4 pieces.One of those pieces impaled Helling in the left forearm.
Helling was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was treated and released.He only required about 8 or 9 stitches according to team spokesman Doug Scopel.
Helling has rejoined the team,and will make his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Albuquqerque Isotopes.
Helling signed a minor-league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers in January.
The former 20-game winner has a lifetime 90-78 record for the Rangers,Marlins,Diamondbacks,and Orioles.He won 20 games in 1998 for the AL West Champion Texas Rangers.
