Nashville Sounds pitcher Rick Helling was impaled by a broken bat during last night's game against the New Orleans Zephyrs.

In the 7th inning with Helling on the mound,Craig Kuzmic fouled off a pitch, shttering his bat in about 4 pieces. One of those pieces impaled Helling in the left forearm.

Helling was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was treated and released. He only required about 8 or 9 stitches according to team spokesman Doug Scopel.

Helling has rejoined the team, and will make his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Albuquqerque Isotopes.

Helling signed a minor-league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers in January.

The former 20-game winner has a lifetime 90-78 record for the Rangers,Marlins,Diamondbacks, and Orioles. He won 20 games in 1998 for the AL West Champion Texas Rangers.
