MLB names Solomon VP of baseball operations

SportsTicker

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Jimmie Lee Solomon took another step up the ladder of success.

Solomon, who has advanced through the ranks of Major League Baseball since 1991, Wednesday was named executive vice president of baseball operations.

Succeeding Sandy Alderson, who resigned last month to become the chief executive officer of the San Diego Padres, Solomon held the post of senior vice president of baseball operations for the last five years. His duties included overseeing major league, minor league and international operations, the Arizona Fall League and the Major League Scouting Bureau.

Solomon now will add on-field discipline, security and facility management to his responsibilities.

"Major League Baseball is fortunate to have a man of Jimmie Lee's experience, intellect and dedication already on board to handle such a complex and important position as the chief of our baseball operations," commissioner Bud Selig said. "Over the years, he has demonstrated considerable skill in working through the labyrinth of our minor league system. I have great confidence that he will be an enormous success in this key position."

Solomon, who earned a law degree at Harvard and a Bachelor of Arts at Dartmouth, for 10 years was a partner at the Baker & Hostetler law firm in Washington. He joined Major League Baseball in 1991 as director of minor league operations before being promoted to executive director.

"I am very grateful to commissioner Selig and (president) Bob DuPuy for giving me this terrific opportunity," Solomon said. "I believe that my experience in the Commissioner's Office, particularly the opportunity to work so closely with Sandy Alderson, has seasoned me for this very important post. This is a real challenge and I am looking forward to it with great enthusiasm."
