The game

Break up the Orioles. They've won seven in a row and are unbeaten in their past eight games. They jumped Montreal starter Britt Reames for three runs in the first inning, and Jason Johnson made a triumphant return from a cracked fingernail.

The arms

Johnson, who missed his previous start after being hit on the right middle finger, retired 10 in a row before Jose Canseco blooped a single into right field in the fourth. He allowed two hits in four innings, walking none and striking out five. Sidney Ponson replaced him and lost the shutout in the ninth. One run was unearned. The Orioles have yielded only 15 earned runs in their past 85 innings in A games.

The bats

Mike Bordick's run-scoring single and Tony Batista's two-run double staked the Orioles to an early 3-0 lead. The Orioles didn't get another hit until Bordick punched a single into center field leading off the sixth. They scored twice in the ninth, with Howie Clark contributing a run-scoring single. By walking in the first inning, Jerry Hairston has reached base to begin a game seven times in 13 opportunities.

Injury update

Melvin Mora (hand, calf) appeared in his first game, pinch running for Bordick in the sixth and playing shortstop. He singled in the eighth on the first pitch he saw this spring. Because Mora got two at-bats instead of one, Hargrove might not play him today.

The number

21 - Road trips made by Jay Gibbons out of 22 exhibition games since he was acquired in the Rule 5 draft, the exception being Saturday's jaunt to Port Charlotte, Fla.

The quote

"[Mora's] a very valuable commodity. But I wouldn't think, unless somebody gets hurt, that you'll see him playing six, seven days a week. I'd think you'll see him playing three to five days a week." - manager Mike Hargrove. - Roch Kubatko
