View Full Version : The Ultimate Test of Fantasy Might

In my first entry of June I will discuss my new fantasy team. Just yesterday I signed up for another league. I set it as an auto-pick league as to not draw my drafting “strategy” into question. I ended up with the first pick and with my first pick I selected:

Raul Chavez

Yeah, Raul Chavez. Followed by Chad Moeller and Willie Bloomquist and Brandon Duckworth and Jason Smith and Joe McEwing and BJ Upton and Gavin Floyd and so on and so on. I think you get the picture. I mentioned recently that I might try to see how well I could do with a team of pickup guys totally void of stars. Well here it is. My entire team was drafted from guys ranked 1000 or higher in Yahoo’s rankings. Of course, I will drop everybody who I drafted and begin picking up the leftovers of the league.

With an initial waiver period of three days, I will have to stick with this team until Friday, but as soon as the waiver period clears I have a string of moves already set up. As long as nobody else puts in a waiver request for any of these players (getting the first pick gave me last waiver priority) this is how my team should shape up:

C A.J. Pierzynski
1b Tino Martinez
2b Craig Biggio
3b Morgan Ensberg
ss Felipe Lopez
of Damon Hollins
of Richard Hidalgo
of Ryan Klesko
ut Nick Johnson
bn Rob Mackowiak
bn Yadier Molina
bn David Eckstein
sp Cory Lidle
sp Scott Kazmir
rp Todd Jones
rp Ryan Dempster
p Dan Kolb
p Ryan Wagner
p Huston Street
p Brett Tomko
p Kyle Davies

I was quite surprised to see so many closers available after the draft, but they are all guys who are ranked well below their value as they were not perceived as closer options until recently. Other closers available: Brian Bruney, Tyler Walker, Brian Fuentes and whoever is closing for the Royals.

I think my starting pitching will shape up nicely. I think Kazmir is a stud and will be around for a while. I haven’t decided whether or not I will try to make this the best it can be or stick with my initial idea of keeping just the players readily available in most leagues. I have decided to keep my pitcher picks constricted to pitchers making two starts in a given week and this would be an interesting idea for this team. I'm going to keep a specific number of relief pitchers on the team to balance the staff and that would be a strict reflection on who’s available in my particular league. If I can get the five relievers I chose I think my bullpen will be formidable.

I’ve decided to keep my lineup as the top player at each position over the past month. I think I should have decent numbers. I will probably use my bench just for the purpose of getting as full of a lineup in there I can each day, getting players on Monday and Thursday to fill in for whoever is off that day.

This will be an ongoing column with updates at least once a week on who I have picked up and where I stand in the league.

How are you going to approach trades? Your trading strategy and trades offered to you?

lol, well, I don't really think anybody is going to want to trade with me, unless I pick up a position player or reliever who gets hot and has real value, in that case, I would not trade or trade for starting pitchers at all, and if a hitter I traded for got cold, I would have to drop them, so trading won't be too beneficial, except in relief pitchers

Unfortunately, when I made my waiver requests I was 12th in the league as far as priority. I realized there was a chance I would not get everybody I wished, but I thought I would. Todd Jones, Craig Biggio and Felipe Lopez were picked up by other teams, although I would have thought that these players, while hot, don’t have the long-term value to warrant losing waiver position over, but that’s just me. So this is how my team looked on Saturday:

C A.J. Pierzynski
1b Tino Martinez
2b Rob Mackowiak
3b Morgan Ensberg
ss David Eckstein
of Richard Hidalgo
of Damon Hollins
of Kevin Mench
ut Nick Johnson
bn Daryle Ward
bn Damion Easley
bn Yadier Molina

sp Chris Capuano
sp Brett Tomko
rp Huston Street
rp Ryan Dempster
p Ryan Wagner
p Dan Kolb
p Brian Bruney
bn Scott Kazmir
bn Kyle Davies

As you can see, just a few changes from my predictions. With Ted Lilly (one of my SP Picks) already drafted by a team (don’t ask me why) the former Cory Lidle spot was taken by Capuano who is rated higher over the past month. From now on I will try to make sure my SP Picks are players that are available in most leagues, available in my leagues and make two starts. This will probably be impossible to do completely, but I will attempt to adhere to it as much as possible.

Biggio and Lopez were replaced in the lineup by Mackowiak and Eckstein and Easley and Ward took their place on the bench. Kevin Mench performed well enough to bump Klesko off the team completely. And Brian Bruney took the place of Todd Jones in the bullpen.

Since then I have made more changes. Rafael Palmeiro bumps Martinez off the team to take over first. Neifi Perez takes over for Eckstein at short and Craig Counsell takes Easley’s spot on the bench. Coco Crisp drops Ward off the bench and should be a mainstay on the team for a while. And Jason Larue takes over for Molina as backup catcher.

My SP Picks will determine who gets the starting spots and I will have to take a closer look at the situation surrounding Kolb and Bruney. Tyler Walker got a save yesterday and may be a better option than either of them. Of course, this all means nothing right now, as the league doesn’t start counting stats until the 20th. Be back next week with an update.
