Mariners Take Manager's Son in 47th Round

.c The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners selected Kent State's Andy Hargrove, the son of manager Mike Hargrove, in the 47th round of the baseball draft Wednesday.

``That shows they have good taste,'' Mike Hargrove said. ``I'm glad he's getting a shot at it. He's in the right environment, with good hitting instructors and people who can help him develop. This will be a good opportunity for him. It's up to him now.''

The younger Hargrove is a 6-foot-1, 250-pound senior first baseman.

``He's a big kid,'' said Bob Fontaine, Seattle's vice president of scouting. ``He's got good power. He's following in big footsteps because his dad was a good hitter. But he's pretty strong.''

Hargrove hit .271 with three home runs, 24 RBIs and a .391 slugging percentage in 46 games for Kent State this season. He sat out last season after transferring from Oral Roberts.

I just read about this in the Seattle Times.

My opinion - why not? A 47th round pick is a big longshot anyway. At least the kid played college ball.

I agree with you, Ducky. Besides, look what happened with the Dodgers when they grabbed Tommy LaPasta's godson (or brother to his godson, never can remember the exact storyline), Mike Piazza!

The Astros also grabbed the son of a current employee, nabbing Koby Clemens in the 24th round, I believe. A lot of people think that Koby will indeed follow in his dad's footsteps, only not in the direction of the Astros but to the University of Texas instead. The other side has some talking that Koby might go ahead and sign with Houston in hopes of a September callup to play with his dad, and that would put pressure on Roger not to ask for a trade to a contender if any of those rumors are even remotely true. But here's the kicker: Some people believe that the September callup wouldn't be this year, but rather in 2006, meaning Roger would return with the Astros for at least one more season. I'm not buying into any of that, just yet, mostly because I believe Koby will try his hand at UT first.
