Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik & Co. made 32 selections on Day 2 of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft and will now tackle the process of signing and assigning the players they picked.

Several players have already signed or are close to signing, assistant general manager Gord Ash said. The Brewers will start announcing signees on Thursday, and according to the Danville Register & Bee, third-round pick Will Inman could be on that list.

Inman, a right-handed pitcher, told reporters that instead of attending Auburn University -- where a scholarship was waiting -- he will report to Phoenix in a few weeks to play for the Brewers of the Arizona rookie league.

According to Curtis Inman, Will's father, representatives of the Braves, Reds and Brewers began calling on Monday night expressing interest. A tentative deal was struck with an offer from the Brewers of $500,000, an amount normally reserved for second-round players. Milwaukee did not have a second-round draft pick.

"They called and asked if they gave him the same money as a second round pick would he come," Curtis Inman said. "[Will] said he didn't care as far as what round he was drafted as long as the money was the same."

Said Will Inman: "It looks pretty good right now."

Inman is 12-0 this season and holds Virginia records for wins in a season, career wins, strikeouts in a season and career strikeouts.

Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik was still waiting Monday evening to hear from Nez Balelo, the agent for first-round draft pick Ryan Braun, a third baseman for the University of Miami.

Zduriencik said Balelo was traveling from his West Coast office to Miami to meet with Braun and his family before beginning formal negotiations with the Brewers.

"I'll wait to hear from him, and then we'll begin talking," said Zduriencik. "Larry Pardo, our area scout, has been spending time with the family. As soon as we hear from (Balelo), we'll get started."

The Brewers have signed 15 of their 49 draft selections, including five of the top 10.

Scouting director Jack Zduriencik said there had been little movement in attempts to sign eighth-round pick Jemile Weeks, the younger brother of the Brewers' rookie second baseman.

Weeks, a shortstop from Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Fla., is the only player drafted in the first 10 rounds by the Brewers yet to sign. He has a scholarship with the University of Miami, leaving the Brewers only a few weeks to sign him or lose their rights.

"I don't know which way it's headed," Zduriencik said. "It's really not headed in either direction right now. I don't know what's going to happen."

The Brewers' third-round pick, right-hander Will Inman, pitched seven no-hit innings for the rookie Helena club in a 5-1 victory Sunday over Billings.

Inman walked one and struck out 10 in raising his record to 4-0 with a 2.40 earned run average in eight games (three starts).

The Brewers' fourth-round pick, third baseman Matt Gamel, is hitting .348 with four homers and 24 RBI at Helena. Yost's son, Ned Yost IV, a pre-draft free-agent signing, is faring nicely with that club also, hitting .330 with four homers and 22 RBI.
