As it turns out, there will be only one Weeks brother playing in the Brewers' organization. The Brewers were unable to sign eighth-round pick Jemile Weeks, brother of rookie second baseman Rickie Weeks.
The sides met one last time Tuesday night at Miller Park but could not reach an agreement. The Brewers officially lost their rights to Jemile Weeks, a shortstop, when he took his first class Wednesday at Miami.
"There were no hard feelings," said general manager Doug Melvin. "We met with Jemile's dad and his agents but we were a little farther apart than I thought we would be. We agreed to end negotiations."
The Brewers did not expect Jemile Weeks to seek as much money as he did to turn down his scholarship to Miami. Melvin said the sides never got close enough during negotiations to reach a compromise.
Rickie Weeks said it would have been nice to have his brother follow him through the organization, but said he understood Jemile's decision.
"It's a chance for him to get a college education and gives him time to get stronger," said Weeks. "He has all the tools to be a great player. He just needs to keep his focus."
Rickie Weeks knows better than most how much improvement can be made during collegiate baseball. He was undrafted out of high school but after three years at Southern University became the second player taken in the 2003 draft.
