Browns: Suggs still not practicing
The News
Browns running back Lee Suggs hasn't practiced yet this week and is listed as doubtful for week one. He missed the team's last two preseason games with a high ankle sprain and it is highly unlikely he'll suit up this week. In fact, he may miss most of the first month of the season.
Our View
Fantasy owners shouldn't anticipate being able to use Suggs for a couple of weeks. The Browns will be using a backfield committee of Reuben Droughns and William Green, but this is a situation you should avoid if at all possible.

Bengals: Washington practices for the first time this week
The News
Bengals wideout Kelley Washington practiced on Thursday for the first time this week. He is dealing with a hamstring injury and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns.
Our View
Washington will be the Bengals' third wideout if he is healthy enough to play Sunday. If not, rookie Chris Henry will get a shot to play against the Browns, who allowed 48 points to the Bengals last time the two teams played.

Vikings: Kleinsasser set to go
The News
Vikings tight end Jim Kleinsasser is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Bucs with a groin injury and practiced with the team on Thursday, reports KFAN.com, the website of the team's flagship radio station.
Our View
This is good news for Michael Bennett and the Vikings' ground game. Kleinsasser is one of the team's best blockers and will be a big asset when Minnesota runs the ball.

Lions: Bly added to the injury report
The News
The Lions added cornerback Dr Bly to the injury report after practice Thursday with a back injury, reports the team's website. He's classified as probable.
Our View
There are no more details available on the injury at this point, but it appears he'll be available for Sunday. That's a good thing, too, because the Lions need every available body against Brett Favre and the Packer passing game.

Colts: Freeney sits out practice
The News
Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney sat out Thursday's practice with a foot injury, reports the Associated Press. He is still expected to start against the Ravens on Sunday. "He's got a little foot soreness, not really a sprain but just a sore foot. But all indications are he should be ready to go. So we just wanted to rest him today," head coach Tony Dungy said after practice.
Our View
Freeney will be ready to go by game time, so make sure you keep him in the lineup in your IDP leagues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 8:44 PM ET
Patriots: Johnson inactive
The News
Patriots wide receiver Bethel Johnson is inactive for Thursday's game against the Raiders because of a thigh injury, according to ESPN.
Our View
Johnson wouldn't be a good fantasy option even if he was active, but now he must be out of your lineup.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 8:40 PM ET
Raiders: Porter will start
The News
Raiders wide receiver Jerry Porter will be in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Patriots, reports ESPN. He was listed as questionable going into the game because of a hamstring injury.
Our View
Porter's hamstring may limit his speed and mobility tonight, so if you have another reasonable option at receiver it would be a good move to go that route.

Colts: More tests for Clark
The News
Colts tight end Dallas Clark has not practiced this week because of a concussion and will undergo additional testing Friday, reports the Associated Press. He suffered the injury two weeks ago against the Broncos.
Our View
Clark has missed at least three games in each of his two seasons in the league and this not the best way to start the year if you want to remove that 'injury prone' label. If Dallas is the only tight end on your roster, you should be prepared to acquire another one before Sunday in case he can't play.

Texans: Robinson returns to practice
The News
Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson returned to practice at full speed Wednesday after missing over a week with a sprained ankle, reports the Houston Chronicle.
Our View
Robinson is expected to play Sunday despite the ankle problems, so feel free to keep him in your IDP lineup.

Ravens: Lewis has root canal
The News
Ravens running back Jamal Lewis capped off an eventful offseason by undergoing a root canal this week. He practiced with the team Wednesday but was unavailable—or, quite possibly, unable—to comment after the workout.
Our View
Some might rather do jail time than undergo a root canal; lucky Jamal, he crammed both into his offseason. We're more concerned about how Lewis' surgically repaired ankle will hold up against the Colts Sunday night.

Eagles: Westbrook breaks off contract talks
The News
Eagles running back Brian Westbrook ended his media silence on Thursday and told the team's official web site that he is no longer talking with the team about a contract extension. "We don't feel as though we've received a proposal from them that really represents the value that I bring to this team," he explained. "I'm not angry; I'm disappointed. From my side, it feels as though I'm not being appreciated." Westbrook is eligible to be an unrestricted free agent after this season, and he added that he plans to play out this season to the best of his abilities.
Our View
Westbrook is going to be playing for a major offseason paycheck, and fantasy owners have to be excited about that little extra incentive. This news doesn't greatly impact his 2005 fantasy value, but his keeper league ranking is now quite cloudy. Meanwhile, rookie Ryan Moats now looks more interest in keeper and dynasty leagues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 12:54 PM ET
Bengals: Washington participates in drills
The News
Wide receiver Kelley Washington, listed as questionable for the Bengals' season opener against the Browns with a hamstring injury, participated in early drills during Wednesday's practice.
Our View
If Washington is unavailable, Chris Henry will move into the Bengals' third receiver role. And seeing as the Bengals and Browns combined for a thousand points and a million yards the last time they met, there just might be enough there to give Henry some fantasy value this week.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 12:36 PM ET
Rams: Pickett will play
The News
Despite being listed on the injury report as questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Rams' defensive tackle Ryan Pickett says he will play. The five-year veteran has been sidelined by a back injury, but said he feels good after returning to practice on Monday. "I was a little sore, but other than that, I'm great," Pickett told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Wednesday. "I'll be in there Sunday, most definitely." Pickett logged 45 tackles and two sacks for the Rams last season.
Our View
Pickett is a starter for the Rams, but not in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players. In fact, his stats make him a fringe player, at best, in IDP leagues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 12:27 PM ET
Cardinals: Stepanovich doubtful for week one
The News
Cardinals' center Alex Stepanovich is listed as doubtful on the week one injury report. The second-year center took part in light workouts on Wednesday, but his broken right hand might keep him out of the week one game against the Giants, according to the Arizona Republic. Even if he does play, Stepanovich is more likely to play guard than center because his snapping hand is injured.
Our View
The Cards are hopeful that Nick Leckey can return from an ankle injury. Otherwise, guard Adam Haayer will make his first career start at center. The good news is that quarterback Kurt Warner has told reporters that he is comfortable with Haayer's snaps and impressed by how quickly he's made the transition.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 12:11 PM ET
Saints: Meier one of three injured tight ends
The News
The Saints will play without tight end Shad Meier when they visit the Panthers in week one. The fifth-year veteran has been sidelined since he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in early August. Meier signed with the Saints during the offseason after spending the previous four seasons with the Titans.
Our View
With Meier and Zach Hilton temporarily sidelined and Boo Williams out for the season with his own injury, the Saints aren't exactly deep at the tight end position right now. Ernie Conwell will get the start and Lamont Hall will play the No. 2 role if Hilton is sidelined by a shoulder injury.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:59 AM ET
Panthers: Peppers ready to play
The News
The injury report lists him as questionable with an ankle injury for Sunday's game against the Saints, but Panthers' defensive end Julius Peppers has deemed himself ready to play. "Right now, I'm 100 percent," Peppers told the Charlotte Observer on Wednesday. "It's a little sore, but it not excruciating pain or anything I can't deal with. It's not anything that's going to keep me off the field." Peppers finished last season with 64 tackles, 11 sacks, two interceptions, and one touchdown.
Our View
It doesn't exactly sound like Julius is at that 100 percent level he claims to be. That being said, Peppers at 90 percent is still better than just about everyone else at 100 percent. Barring a setback, IDP owners can start Peppers with confidence in week one.

Chargers: Merriman improving
The News
First-round draft pick Shawne Merriman is officially listed as questionable on the injury report with a knee injury. Although head coach Marty Schottenheimer insisted early this week that his two-to-four week timetable for returning had not changed, Merriman did practice on Wednesday with a brace on his sprained left knee, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Our View
Don't expect Merriman to have a major impact on Sunday if he does play against the Cowboys. His pass-rushing ability gives him definite fantasy upside, but he's got some catching up to do.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:39 AM ET
Browns: Shea sits
The News
Tight end Aaron Shea was held out of team drills Wednesday, and he's listed as questionable for Sunday's season opener against the Bengals.
Our View
The Browns are talking about how many games Shea might miss, which doesn't exactly bode well for his chances of seeing the field this week. Newly acquired Billy Miller is working overtime to learn the playbook, and he is expected to play Sunday along with starter Steve Heiden.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:27 AM ET
Redskins: Arrington still getting up to speed
The News
Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington isn't on the week one injury report, but that doesn't mean he's fully healthy and ready to create havoc in the season opener. In fact, Arrington is a backup to starter Warrick Holdman. "We're still waiting on him to get back into football shape, to get the feel for the game back, and get the confidence in his knee," linebackers coach Dale Lindsey told the Washington Post. "We'll bring him back in slowly."
Our View
Arrington played in the last two preseason games, but he's still rounding into form and regaining confidence following multiple right knee operations. He'll definitely be in the mix on Sunday, but IDP fantasy owners should know that it might be a few more weeks before the LaVar of old emerges.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:26 AM ET
Panthers: Foster still tops depth chart
The News
Panthers' head coach John Fox refused on Wednesday to say whether Stephen Davis or DeShaun Foster will start at tailback in the week one meeting with the Saints. The Charlotte Observer reports that while Davis has been running with the first-team offense, Foster is still listed at the top of the team's depth chart.
Our View
Our guess is that Davis will get the start but split carries with Foster. In fact, we won't be surprised if DeShaun takes the majority of the carries in week one despite Stephen's recent claim that he's ready to take 300 carries.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:25 AM ET
Chiefs: Hall will play, return kicks
The News
A minor knee injury to Dante Hall is causing tightness in hamstring, but Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil told the team's official website that he will play and return all kicks on Sunday against the Jets.
Our View
Hall should not be used as a wide receiver, but this is good news for those using the Chiefs defense/special teams unit in fantasy play.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:25 AM ET
Bears: Azumah practices again
The News
For the second straight day, Bears cornerback and return specialist Jerry Azumah participated in practice as he attempts to return from arthroscopic hip surgery, the Chicago Tribune reports. Azumah is questionable for the season opener at Washington.
Our View
Azumah is one of Lovie Smith's favorite ballhawks on defense and a Pro Bowl return specialist, but he can't be used in fantasy play until we're certain he's going to be in the lineup.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:15 AM ET
Steelers: Porter practices
The News
Linebacker Joey Porter practiced for the second time this week, but he is still listed as questionable for Sunday's season opener against the Titans.
Our View
Porter is nursing a knee injury, but it appears he'll be ready for a full workload this weekend. Still, if you've got other IDP options you might be wise to avoid the risk, as an early Steeler lead might sent Porter to the bench.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:06 AM ET
Panthers: Davis wants 300 carries
The News
Panthers' running back Stephen Davis isn't just content with the idea of starting in week one despite coming off microfracture knee surgery. The 31 year-old running back wants 300 carries this season. "My mindset is 300 carries," Davis told the Charlotte Observer on Wednesday. "My body feels good. I'm ready. Bring it on, baby." Davis added that he feels as strong as he did at the start of the 2003 season.
Our View
Fantasy owners who have running back issues or an open spot on their roster should certainly consider adding Davis, who went undrafted in most leagues due to the uncertainty surrounding his injury. We're still not convinced that his surgically repaired knee will hold up, but he might start week one and could be a low risk/high reward player.

Giants: Elbow Watch comes to a close
The News
Giants quarterback Eli Manning is listed as probable for the season opener due to a sprained right elbow, but the so-called Elbow Watch came to a close on Wednesday. Manning practiced on Tuesday, felt no pain on Wednesday, and practiced again. "I felt good today," he told the team's official web site. "I took all my reps. I ran the two-minute drill. I've had no issues with my elbow."
Our View
Fantasy owners holding Jeremy Shockey, Plaxico Burress, or Amani Toomer can finally exhale. Eli is not yet a star or very consistent, but the Giants' passing game would likely be awful if the team needed to fall back on Tim Hasselbeck.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 11:04 AM ET
Bears: Lovie focused on Jones, not Benson
The News
Rookie running back Cedric Benson may be anxious about his NFL debut on Sunday against the Redskins, but Bears head coach Lovie Smith has his focus elsewhere. "Right now, I'm more interested in Thomas Jones' reps that he gets as our starting tailback," the coach told the Chicago Tribune.
Our View
Lovie is obviously more concerned about winning this football game than developing his first-round draft pick. We've said all along that Jones is the man in week one, and that Benson should stay on your bench. This only confirms that.

Falcons: White should play on Monday
The News
Falcons' wide receiver Roddy White returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a high ankle sprain in a preseason game back in mid-August. "Roddy practiced today and it looks like he'll be ready to go," Falcons' head coach Jim Mora told the team's official website. "Now that can always change tomorrow, but that is our status as of right now." The Falcons selected White with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2005 draft.
Our View
White is expected to help out on special teams and might get some action on offense. Don't be surprised if Roddy replaces Dez White in the starting lineup in the near future, as Mora is very high on the rookie receiver.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 10:51 AM ET
Cowboys: Price, Barber might not play
The News
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells told the team's official web site that he's not sure if wide receiver Peerless Price or running back Marion Barber will play in the season opener. Price is still getting up to speed after signing with the team on Monday, and Barber has missed time following minor foot surgery.
Our View
Fantasy owners certainly shouldn't be counting on Barber this season, and Price will need some more time to become accustomed to his new uniform. Even when that happens, Price will be no better than the third receiver while Terry Glenn and Keyshawn Johnson are healthy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 10:46 AM ET
Jets: Gragg signed to one-year deal
The News
The Jets signed offensive lineman Scott Gragg to a one-year contract, according to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli. The 10-year veteran was brought in as insurance at right guard, where second-year man Adrian Jones enters the season as the starter. Gragg has started 142 of 156 career games with the Giants and 49ers.
Our View
Arguably the best offensive lineman still in the market, Gragg is a much-needed insurance policy should Jones get injured or prove ineffective.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 8, 2005 10:39 AM ET
Falcons: Duckett knows his role
The News
Falcons' running back T.J. Duckett could be a starter if he played for other teams. However, he's not complaining about his role as a backup in Atlanta. "It's clear-cut," Duckett told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday. "Warrick is the No. 1 back, I'm No. 2. Whenever I'm called in, I've got to make something happen, make a play, whatever is called for me to do. That is my role." Duckett finished last season with 104 carries for 509 yards and eight touchdowns.
Our View
Fantasy owners have to give T.J. credit for being a team player even if he's stuck in a less than ideal fantasy situation. Dunn is definitely the better play in yardage leagues given that he finished with 597 more yards than Duckett last year. Surprisingly, Warrick also finished with one more touchdown than T.J. last season.

Cowboys: Witten anticipating decline
The News
Cowboys tight end Jason Witten caught only four passes for 25 yards over the last three preseason games, and he's worried about being a forgotten piece of the offense. He met with Bill Parcells earlier this week, and the head coach assured the tight end that he would be a big part of what they do. "Obviously, it's going to be hard to do what I did last year," Witten told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Our big emphasis in the preseason was to run the football and stretch the field...Now, we are going to have to get some drives going, and that's where I come in."
Our View
There are a lot of factors that would lead us to believe Witten is in for a statistical decline. First, he's working with a new quarterback. Second, the Cowboys definitely are a run-first club. Third, most of Witten's work in 2004 came with Terry Glenn on injured reserve. Fourth, the Cowboys not only welcomed back Glenn but also added Peerless Price, and both receivers have good rapport with Drew Bledsoe. Witten is still a very good fantasy option in tight end-mandatory leagues, but we won't be shocked if he fails to reach 980 yards again.

Raiders: Porter will be game-time decision
The News
Raiders head coach Norv Turner told the San Francisco Chronicle that wide receiver Jerry Porter will be a game-time decision on Thursday night against the Patriots due to his injured hamstring.
Our View
While we expect Porter to give it a go, you must have a healthier option with a better matchup. Leave Porter on the pine.

Bills: Losman expecting to be blitzed
The News
J.P. Losman is expecting the Texans to blitz him early and often in week one. "I'm expecting a lot," Losman told the Buffalo News. "Anytime you have a young quarterback, they're going to want to blitz, see if you can handle it, see if you can pick it up and react and make a play."
Our View
The Texans are coached by Dom Capers, who helped mastermind the zone-blitzing schemes so common in the NFL when he was an assistant with the Steelers in the 1990s. The Texans don't have the most formidable defensive front in football, but you can bet they'll bring the heat all day on the first-year signal-caller. The Bills believe Losman is well-prepared to handle the zone schemes, since that is what their own defense has thrown at him in practice over the last year, but Sunday will be the first test to see how Losman handles himself in his first year as the starter.

Packers: Diggs missed practice
The News
Packers linebacker Na'il Diggs didn't practice on Wednesday and was listed as questionable on the injury report, reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He is battling a knee injury.
Our View
The Packers can't afford any losses to their linebacking corps, so they're going to be very cautious with Diggs. If he can't play, Paris Lennon would likely get the start.

Chargers: Merriman will be a game-time decision
The News
Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer will decide Sunday whether rookie linebacker Shawne Merriman will be active for his first professional game, reports NFL.com.
Our View
Merriman will be a source of sacks for those in IDP leagues this season, but be prepared to play without him this week. On the bright side, it appears he is very close to returning and should be ready to go in week two if not on Sunday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 11:55 PM ET
Packers: Whitticker nails down the starting job
The News
Will Whitticker will be the Packers' starting guard when they take the field against the Lions on Sunday, reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He will be the first rookie offensive lineman to start a season opener for the Packers since 1985.
Our View
The Packers are counting on Whitticker to help replace the guard tandem of Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle that left via free agency. His main job this season will be keeping Brett Favre upright and opening lanes for Ahman Green. He didn't look great in the preseason and if he doesn't improve quickly, the fantasy value is the entire Packer offense will take a hit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 11:25 PM ET
Steelers: Porter upgraded, will play
The News
Steelers linebacker Joey Porter has been upgraded to probable on the injury report and will play despite his knee injury, reports ESPN's John Clayton.
Our View
Although we know Porter will suit up and play on Sunday, those in IDP leagues may still want to give him the week off because the Steelers will take him out of the game early if they establish a big lead over the Titans.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 11:15 PM ET
Lions: Lehman won't play on Sunday
The News
Lions linebacker Teddy Lehman was downgraded from doubtful to out on the team's injury report due to his knee injury.
Our View
We were hoping this would be a breakout season for Lehman, but this is not a good way to start. We'll update his condition for next week once the injury report is released.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 10:40 PM ET
Bengals: James at practice again
The News
Bengals cornerback Tory James practiced for a second consecutive day on Friday, reports the team's website. He is listed as probable on the week one injury report with a toe issue.
Our View
Considering the Bengals allowed 92 points to the Browns in two games last season, James' availability is a big concern. There will be plenty of passing on Sunday afternoon and James will be in the lineup, so make sure you have him starting in your IDP league.

Jaguars: Hankton undergoes surgery on his ankle
The News
Jaguars receiver Cortez Hankton had surgery on his right ankle and will miss several weeks, NFL.com reported on Friday.
Our View
Hankton was surpassed by rookies Matt Jones and Chad Owens on the depth chart during training camp, and wouldn't be a fantasy option even if he was healthy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 10:02 PM ET
Giants: Peterson practices on a bad knee
The News
Giants cornerback Will Peterson practiced on Friday and should be able to play Sunday despite his sore knee, reports ESPN's John Clayton. He is currently listed as questionable on the team's injury report.
Our View
The Giants could really use Peterson this week to help defend the Cardinals' talented combo of Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. He'll try to tough it out on Sunday, but if he can't play, bump up your projections for the Cards' passing game a bit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 9:49 PM ET
Cowboys: Burnett out at least two weeks
The News
Cowboys linebacker Kevin Burnett injured a knee on Thursday and will miss a couple weeks of action, reports ESPN.com.

Al Singleton will replace Burnett Sunday against the Chargers and during next week's Monday night affair against the Redskins.

Chargers: Merriman practices
The News
Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman practiced with the team on Friday, reports ESPN's John Clayton. He is listed as probable for Sunday's game because of a knee injury.
Our View
Those who selected Merriman this fall got themselves a bona fide pass rusher who will be in the backfield plenty of times this season. However, you may want to sit him this week to ensure his knee is healthy enough to display the speed that made him a first-round pick.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 9:39 PM ET
Seahawks: Mili doubtful for week one
The News
Seahawks' tight end Itula Mili was hospitalized on Thursday night due to an intestinal blockage and is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. "In all likelihood he'll just stay home and we'll see him on Monday," Seahawks' head coach Mike Holmgren told the Associated Press on Friday. Mili finished last season with 23 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown.
Our View
Mili's absence means Jerramy Stevens will start against the Jags on Sunday. Stevens had a great training camp and scored in the last preseason game, but he doesn't have much fantasy value this week because he'll be facing a defense that didn't allow a tight end score in their last five games in 2004.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 9:32 PM ET
Chargers: Jackson practices on Friday
The News
Chargers wideout Vincent Jackson is listed as probable on the team's injury report and participated in practice on Friday afternoon, reports ESPN.com.
Our View
Jackson will suit up on Sunday, but his fantasy value is limited by his position (fourth) on the depth chart and his lack of playing time this preseason.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 9:17 PM ET
Steelers: Williams downgraded on the injury report
The News
Steelers cornerback Willie Williams was downgraded to questionable on the team's injury report because of a groin injury, according to ESPN's John Clayton. The injury kept him out of Friday's practice.
Our View
It doesn't look good for Williams' availability this week. If he can't go, Ike Taylor or Ricardo Colclough would start against Steve McNair and the Titans.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 8:52 PM ET
Ravens: Heap added to the injury report
The News
Ravens tight end Todd Heap was added to the Ravens injury report Friday with an ankle injury. He had surgery on the ankle this offseason after suffering from a bad sprain much of last season. ESPN is reporting he practiced on Friday despite the injury.
Our View
While we don't like to see Heap on the injury report at all after last season's problems, it appears this is not a serious issue and he will play on Sunday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 8:35 PM ET
Titans: Henry at Friday's practice
The News
Titans halfback Travis Henry practiced on Friday and will play against the Steelers on Sunday despite suffering from turf toe, reports ESPN's John Clayton. Henry missed last week's preseason game and is listed as questionable on the team's injury report.
Our View
Henry would have played in the final preseason game if it had been a regular season tilt and will backup Chris Brown this week. Travis is a poor fantasy option against the tough Steelers defense.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 8:33 PM ET
Colts: Jackson won't play Sunday
The News
Colts cornerback Marlin Jackson hasn't practiced all week because of a shoulder injury and won't play in Sunday night's game against the Ravens, reports ESPN's John Clayton.
Our View
Jackson has a bright future in the league but will have to wait until next week for his debut. This takes away some depth in the Colts' secondary, but it may not matter with Kyle Boller under center for the Ravens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 9, 2005 8:24 PM ET
Texans: Banks added to the injury report
The News
Texans quarterback Tony Banks was put on the team's injury report after being unable to practice Friday because of a problem with a contact lens, reports ESPN.
Our View
If Tony Banks is on your fantasy roster, you either need to update that cheat sheet from 1998 or get out of your 40-team league.

Vikings: Williams arrested in late August
The News
Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams was arrested at his home in the early hours of August 28 by police after a domestic dispute with his wife, reports KFAN.com, the website of the team's flagship radio station. Williams' wife, Latarsha, had cuts on her left arm and in her mouth when police arrived at the couple's home. Latarsha told police that Williams had assaulted her and a knife was found at the scene.
Our View
Williams has emerged into an elite tackle and is one of the best IDP options on the defensive line. His next court appearance is on Tuesday, so we won't know for a while if the league plans to take action because of this incident.

Bengals: Washington gets another day of practice in
The News
Bengals receiver Kelley Washington practiced for a second consecutive day Friday despite still being listed as questionable on the injury report, reports the team's website. He is nursing a hamstring injury.
Our View
It's looking very much like Washington will suit up on Sunday. He scored a touchdown last time he matched up against the Browns and makes a good play as a third wideout in deeper leagues.

Packers: Diggs unlikely to play Sunday
The News
Packers linebacker Na'il Diggs likely will miss Sunday's game against the Lions with a knee injury, reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He is currently listed as questionable on the team's injury report.
Our View
Paris Lenon will start at strong-side linebacker and Roy Manning or Robert Thomas will play on the weak side if Diggs can't suit up.

Titans: Troupe returns to practice
The News
Tight end Ben Troupe, who missed the bulk of the preseason after breaking a bone in his foot during minicamp, returned to practice this week. "He did a nice job [Wednesday] and [Thursday]," Coach Jeff Fisher said on the team's official web site. "He came back today without any problems. Things look good."
Our View
Fellow tight end Erron Kinney also appears ready to play Sunday, and new Titans OC Norm Chow plans to get both involved in the passing game. Three of the last four passing scores the Steelers allowed at the end of the 2004 season went to tight ends, so a healthy Troupe makes a sneaky fantasy play this week.

Bengals: Perry added to injury report
The News
The Bengals added running back Chris Perry to the injury report with a heat cramp. He was unable to practice Thursday due to the ailment but is listed as probable for Sunday's season opener.
Our View
Perry missed most of his rookie year with hernia-related injuries, then looked good during a brief appearance this preseason… and now he's back on the injury report. With a heat cramp. Seriously. We're not doctors, but may we suggest a couple Midol and a long soak in the tub with lavender bath beads, followed by a foot rub, some white zinfandel and a viewing of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? Refreshing.

Steelers: Staley downgraded
The News
Running back Duce Staley was downgraded from questionable to doubtful for Sunday's season opener against the Titans. He took a few reps with the Steelers' first-team offense during Thursday's practice, but Willie Parker received most of the work with the first unit. Jerome Bettis did not practice at all.
Our View
Bettis has already been ruled out, and with Staley now doubtful it's clear Parker will receive the bulk of the workload against the Titans. Considering that Steeler backs were the most productive unit in the league last year, and Tennessee's defense is a mere shell of its former top-ranked self following two years of salary cap purges, Parker is a dynamite week-one fantasy play.

Bengals: Graham good to go
The News
Kicker Shayne Graham, who missed the bulk of the preseason while battling an injured groin muscle, proclaimed himself ready for the season opener this weekend. "There's nothing to say about the leg other than I feel good," Graham told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I've been kicking this week. Kicked off, kicked field goals, it feels good."
Our View
The Bengals have no other kicker on their roster, with punter Kyle Larson their first emergency option should Graham aggravate the injury. Cincy best beware of overuse for Graham this week, given that the last time the Bengals and Browns played Graham tallied three field goals and seven PATs and had to kick off 11 times.

Vikings: Burleson envisions receiver by committee
The News
Vikings new top wide receiver Nate Burleson doesn't see himself as your typical No. 1 receiver. "I guarantee this year we're going to have a different leading receiver in the majority of the games," Burleson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "And that's good, because that means we're attacking teams from different angles and we're using all the weapons." No Randy Moss means opposing teams won't be keying as much on stopping one wideout. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper won't miss having to adhere to a certain ratio of plays for the "No. 1" guy. "I'm not in the business of keeping everybody happy," Culpepper said. "I'm trying to win a championship. I'm trying to move the chains and get touchdowns…If someone feels like they're not getting the ball enough, they need to evaluate themselves and see what's really important."
Our View
You don't suppose Daunte was referring to anyone in particular, do you? As for Burleson's assessment, we're certain that is the theory, but unlike the guy Culpepper may or may not have been referring to, Nate comes across as very modest. Make no mistake, Burleson will be the Vikes' top receiver this year, and with Daunte throwing him the ball he should post numbers worthy of a top-10 fantasy wideout.

Bears: Harris back in practice
The News
One day after leaving practice with a heavily wrapped ankle, Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris participated in workouts Thursday with no ill effects, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Our View
Harris is at the center of what the Bears do on defense, literally and figuratively, so this is good news for those planning to use the Monsters of the Midway on Sunday against the 'Skins.

Seahawks: Dyson likely to split snaps with Herndon
The News
The official word is that Seahawks' head coach Mike Holmgren will make a game-time decision before naming his starting right cornerback. However, one of those cornerback, Andre Dyson, said Thursday that he expects to rotate with the other. "We've been going through this the whole preseason," Dyson told the Seattle Times of his battle with Kelly Herndon. "We're both going to play a lot, no matter who's out there (to start the game)."
Our View
Dyson has been taking the starter's reps in practice, so we can only assume that he'll start on Sunday. Based on Andre's comments, though, fantasy owners who award points for individual defensive players should expect to see plenty of both cornerbacks. Obviously, the best cornerback option in Seattle is Marcus Trufant, who is the unquestioned starter on the left side.

Broncos: Terrell transaction not yet done
The News
Although it's expected to be a technicality, newly acquired wide receiver may have to be cut and re-signed before he sees the field for the Broncos, the Denver Post reports. Terrell is not expected to play for Denver until week three.
Our View
The Broncos would like to use Terrell in third-down and red zone situations, but he has a lot of catching up to do in learning their offense. There's little fantasy value here at this point.

Bears: Gage will still have to compete
The News
Despite winning the title of No. 2 starter, Bears wide receiver Justin Gage will still share the position with Bernard Berrian and Mark Bradley when Chicago visits Washington on Sunday. "We're going to play a lot of guys," head coach Lovie Smith told the Chicago Tribune. "The competition at wide receiver will go into the first game."
Our View
Gage has been more visible since Kyle Orton took over at quarterback, but also consider that Bradley spent a lot of time working with his fellow rookie on the second- and third-teams in training camp. Either way, the Bears' second receiver spot isn't exactly a lucrative position.

Vikings: Running back quandary will linger all year
The News
One day after calling himself a "fantasy football player's nightmare" because of vagueness regarding the Vikings running back committee, head coach Mike Tice said on Thursday that he is through talking about his backs' playing time. "I don't even want to talk about the running backs," Tice remarked during his press conference. "Every time I say something about the running backs you guys try to start a controversy amongst my players… Every time I say any damn thing about playing time and the running backs I look up and you guys are trying to get my players to say something about my decision. So screw it, you guys aren't getting anything about the running backs the rest of the season. You guys figure out where the hell I'm playing the running backs on your own. So that's it, no more running back questions. I'm done with it, period, end of story for the rest of the year. I'm finished."
Our View
We'll be sure to check back in with coach Tice again next week. For now, we know Michael Bennett is starting, and that Mewelde Moore, Moe Williams, Ciatrick Fason, Bill Brown, Herschel Walker, Darrin Nelson, Teddy Brown, and Chuck Foreman should all see carries. However, we are pretty certain that Onterrio Smith will not be in uniform.

Rams: Jackson sets expectations high
The News
Rams' running back Steven Jackson has established high goals for himself in his first season as a full-time starter. "If I could break 1,000 yards, that'd be good," Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Thursday. "I've never done that. And 1,500 yards would be an excellent year. Me personally, I want more than that." Jackson finished his rookie season with 134 carries for 673 yards and four touchdowns.
Our View
We're happy to hear that the second-year rusher aspires to top the 1,500-yard mark this season, but his shaky offensive line might have something to say about that. Jackson had an excellent preseason and he should perform well as a starter, but it also remains to be seen how many carries he'll lose to Marshall Faulk.

Chiefs: Former rival Griffin to get a look
The News
The Denver Post is reporting that former Broncos running back Quentin Griffin is expected to work out for the Chiefs on Friday. Griffin was released by the Broncos last week.
Our View
It's not surprising to hear that Griffin attracted interest from the Chiefs, considering the guy dropped 156 yards and three touchdowns on them in week one of last year before tearing up his knee. The Chiefs also don't have much experience behind Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson in the backfield. We'll let you know what comes of the workout.

Chargers: Merriman, Jackson upgraded
The News
Rookies Shawne Merriman (knee) and Vincent Jackson (Achilles'), the Chargers' early round draft picks at linebacker and wide receiver respectively, were upgraded from questionable to probable on Thursday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Our View
While both may see the field, neither has been able to practice much so their conditioning is nowhere near ready for a full game. Do not consider either in fantasy play, even though Merriman has pass-rushing upside.

The News
In his daily press conference on Thursday, Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil declared quarterback Trent Green 100 percent recovered from the calf injury that required surgery last week. "Trent had a very good week [of practice], threw the ball accurately, efficiently and to the right person."
Our View

Giants: Barber gets a bump, a pay bump
The News
Tiki Barber received a raise on the remaining two years of his old contract Thursday and has also signed a two-year extension that will keep him with the Giants through 2008, when he will be 32, according to the New York Daily News. "I'll be here for the rest of my career," Barber said following Thursday's practice.
Our View
Even though the deal was just struck, Barber has said all along that he would not let his contract become a distraction. He's one of the most versatile backs in the NFL. He led the league last season with 2,096 yards from scrimmage and made his first Pro Bowl.

Buccaneers: Pittman to stay involved
The News
The presence of rookie running back Carnell Williams may have bumped Michael Pittman out of the starting tailback spot, but it won't keep him off the field. "Both of us are going to be on the field at the same time, with me playing fullback, and tailback and receiver and tight end," Pittman told the St. Petersburg Times on Thursday. "All kinds of stuff, man. I'll be able to line up everywhere. I just can't give away too much." Pittman rushed for 926 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games last season.
Our View
He can't give too much away? Is there anything he kept to himself? Pittman just told us that he and Williams will be lined up in the same backfield, which means fullback Mike Alstott is probably the odd man out. We weren't expecting much from Alstott this year, anyway, but the news that Pittman will be so active is surprising.

Panthers: Shelton doesn't need surgery
The News
Panthers' running back Eric Shelton will not need surgery to repair his broken left foot. The Charlotte Observer reports that Shelton will likely spend two months in a walking cast.
Our View
The Panthers placed the rookie rusher on injured reserve last week, so there is no chance of him returning this season.

49ers: Newberry to start
The News
49ers' center Jeremy Newberry practiced on Thursday and will start the game against the Rams on Sunday. "I'm going to be ready, without a doubt," Newberry told the San Jose Mercury News. "But I already knew that. I guess what this does is it erases doubt in other people's minds." Newberry missed 15 games last season with a knee injury.
Our View
Although this is good news for Tim Rattay and Kevan Barlow, there's no guarantee that Newberry's knee will hold up all season. He has bone rubbing on bone in his knee joint and the Niners are taking it easy on him by only asking him to practice one per week. We'll keep you posted on Jeremy's playing status throughout the season.

Cowboys: Price will likely be inactive Sunday
The News
Coach Bill Parcells said there is a possibility that receiver Peerless Price, acquired after being cut by the Falcons, will be inactive Sunday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Our View
If Price is inactive, the Cowboys will have Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton, and Terrance Copper as their receivers. Even when Price gets up to speed on the Cowboys' offense, he'll be hard pressed to be any better than the third receiver.

Redskins: Taylor has his trail date postponed
The News
Safety Sean Taylor's trial date, originally scheduled for Monday, was postponed Thursday until October 24 by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mary Barzee, according to the Washington Post.
Our View
Taylor's attorney turned down a plea bargain offer to waive the mandatory minimum by removing the firearm allegation. If Taylor had accepted, he would have been forced to accept a negotiated sentence almost certainly requiring jail time. Taylor isn't out of the woods yet, but he hasn't let his off-field problems affect his on-field play.

Broncos: Kubiak praises Anderson
The News
Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak has coached John Elway, Jerry Rice, and Terrell Davis, but he says that starting tailback Mike Anderson had the strongest training camp he has seen over the course of his entire coaching career. "He was on a mission," Kubiak told the Denver Post. "He was so on every day."
Our View
That's high praise from a guy who's seen a lot of players in a lot of training camps in Denver and San Francisco. Both he, head coach Mike Shanahan, and quarterback Jake Plummer have been effusive in their praise of Anderson, who has every opportunity to become the next in a long list of surprise 1,000-yard Broncos backs.

Saints: Hakim practices, still questionable
The News
Saints' wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim practiced on Wednesday and Thursday, but is still listed as questionable on the injury report with a hamstring injury, according to The Advocate. Hakim missed the last three preseason games and is still working himself back into football shape.
Our View
Az didn't get much time to work with his new teammates before he suffered the injury, so we do not expect him to play much of a role this week even if he is healthy enough to play against the Panthers. Look for second-year receiver Devery Henderson to play the No. 3 receiver role.

Buccaneers: Stinchcomb downgraded
The News
The Buccaneers downgraded left guard Matt Stinchcomb to questionable on the injury report due to a lower back injury. "Matt's lower back flared up," Bucs' head coach Jon Gruden told the Tampa Tribune on Thursday. "We think he'll be okay. Whether or not he starts, we'll determine that later in the week."
Our View
This injury shouldn't concern fantasy owners who have Brian Griese or Carnell Williams on their rosters. The Bucs were leaning toward starting rookie Dan Buenning over Stinchcomb anyway, so the veteran's injury is more of a depth blow than anything.

Ravens: Lewis, Taylor could split carries against Colts
The News
The Ravens want to use the ground game to control the clock and keep Peyton Manning off the field in their season opener—and they plan on using both Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor to do so. Ravens coach Brian Billick indicated that while Lewis will start, he will split time with Taylor and estimated that the number of carries each back receives will be "fairly equitable." Billick added that Lewis' carries will increase in week two, and that he would be ready for a full workload following the team's week three bye.
Our View
Jamal had 130 yards against Indy last year, but he'll be hard pressed to match that number if he's only going to see 15-20 touches. He says his ankle doesn't hurt when he runs, and that he has no restriction on his number of carries, but given Billick's comments you're taking a bit of a risk plugging either back into your fantasy lineup.

Panthers: Peppers upgraded to probable
The News
The Panthers upgraded defensive end Julius Peppers to probable on the injury report on Thursday, according to the Charlotte Observer. The fourth-year veteran had been listed as questionable with an ankle injury.

Dolphins: Thompson released
The News
Wide receiver Derrius Thompson, the team's second leading receiver a year ago, was released by the Dolphins on Thursday. Thompson had been placed on injured reserve a week ago, but reached an injury settlement and negotiated his release on Thursday, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Our View
Thompson had 49 catches for 718 yards and four touchdowns a year ago, but fell behind David Boston, Wes Welker, and Bryan Gilmore in the wideout pecking order during training camp.

Colts: Doss' suspension reduced
The News
Safety Mike Doss had his two-game suspension cut in half by the NFL Thursday following his appeal. Doss was initially suspended for two games for an offseason incident in which he plead no contest to misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in public. Doss will only lose one game check, or about $22,352, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Our View
Despite the NFL's ruling, Doss may not be available for Indy's second game because he's still nursing a groin injury that kept him out of action the entire preseason.

Jets: Pennington turning the corner
The News
It's taken Chad Pennington a while to get used to new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger's schemes, but he is reportedly starting to feel more comfortable in the more aggressive, vertical passing attack. According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Pennington has been overthinking rather than just playing, and the result has been difficulty adjusting from the old, conservative system run by former OC Paul Hackett. "Actually, right now, I have to get him to come back," Heimerdinger told the Star-Ledger. "He's looking for the deep ball too much. I'm trying to remind him where the check-downs are and to keep moving the chains."
Our View
The good news is Pennington's surgically-repaired throwing shoulder hasn't been an issue since the first two weeks of training camp. The bad news is that Chad has had trouble adjusting to the new scheme. Pennington has never been known as a strong-armed quarterback, but he is one of the smartest signal-callers in the game, so there is little doubt he'll eventually master the new scheme. It could take a few weeks, but Pennington appears right on track for a bounce back campaign in 2005.

Texans: Morency slated for return duty
The News
With Jerome Mathis likely missing the season opener with a pulled hamstring, fellow rookie Vernand Morency will get a chance to return kicks for the first time since his sophomore year in college. "When you get an opportunity to play and have a chance to contribute, you can actually earn your paycheck," Morency told the Houston Chronicle. "This is great."
Our View
Mathis was slated to be the Texans' top kick returner and No. 2 punt returner behind Phillip Buchanon. Morency should fill Mathis' spot, though the team has indicated they may also consider using Domanick Davis to return kicks.

Patriots: Key defensive switch helped contain Moss
The News
After giving up over 100 yards and a long touchdown to Randy Moss in the first quarter, the Patriots switched from their traditional 3-4 defense to a 4-3 formation that allowed them to get more pressure on quarterback Kerry Collins, reports the Boston Globe.
Our View
Jarvis Green, Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, and Vince Wilfork combined to put more pressure on Collins in the second half, and the results were obvious – Collins was completely ineffective after halftime as the Patriots pulled away. From the Raiders standpoint, protecting their quarterback is obviously a priority this season, and the fantasy fortunes of Moss, Collins, and Jerry Porter depend upon the line protecting their quarterback.

Dolphins: McMichael pleads guilty, NFL action uncertain
The News
Randy McMichael pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor criminal trespass charge in Georgia county court on Thursday. According to the Miami Herald, two other misdemeanor charges against McMichael were dropped, leaving him with a 90-day probationary sentence, a $500 fine and open restitution, meaning he has to pay for any damages he caused. All charges stemmed from an incident between McMichael and his wife, Cawanna, this offseason.
Our View
McMichael now faces review and could face a suspension or fine by the NFL. If he is found to be in violation of the league's personal conduct policy, he'll almost certainly receive a one or two-game suspension. There has been no timeframe set for the NFL review, but fantasy owners with McMichael on their rosters should expect him to miss a game or two later this season.

Lions: Garcia says he'll be back in five weeks
The News
Jeff Garcia doesn't think he'll need the diagnosed six to eight weeks to recover from his broken left fibula and sprained left ankle. "I'm being optimistic about it and saying five weeks," the Lions quarterback told the Detroit Free Press. "That's my own thought. I feel like I'm a fast healer. I feel like I'm a tough guy. I feel like I can respond from something like this and get back out onto the field."
Our View
Garcia suffered the injury in the preseason finale against the Bills on September 2, so according to his personal timeframe, he might be available to back up Joey Harrington for their October 9 game against the Ravens. And since the Lions have a bye in week three, Jeff's optimistic timeframe means he'd only miss three games. We shall see.

Raiders: Porter plays through injury
The News
Hamstrung wide receiver Jerry Porter did gut his way through the season opener at New England on Thursday night, recording three catches for 48 yards. "I would've liked to have gotten at least one or two preseason games and got a chance to play against somebody and get some live bullets shot against me," Porter told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. "But that's how it is."
Our View
Porter seemed to lack his typical burst, however, which isn't surprising considering this was his first game action since sustaining the injury early in training camp. The Raiders now have over a week off to get Porter healthy, so we'll let you know how the hammy responds.

Patriots: Brady looks just fine
The News
After a preseason in which there was some question about the health of Tom Brady's arm, the Patriots' quarterback silenced those doubts with 306 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Deion Branch and Tim Dwight on touchdown passes in the first half, then watched as Corey Dillon did the rest of the damage.
Our View
Brady had over 200 yards in the first half, as the Pats completely abandoned the run in favor of the pass. The Golden Boy looked like his regular self, dissecting the defense and utilizing all of his receivers in the Pats' spread offense. It was business as usual for a top tier fantasy signal-caller.

Eagles: Owens and McNabb "getting along just fine"
The News
Terrell Owens said Friday in a radio interview on Miami's 790 AM that he spoke to quarterback Donovan McNabb and the teammates are "getting along just fine," according to the Associated Press. "We both have a mutual respect for each other and I think we probably understand that both of us may have been wrong in the situation, but that's between Donovan and I," Owens said.
Our View

Bears: Benson's playing time unclear
The News
Coach Lovie Smith hasn't revealed how much—if at all—running back Cedric Benson will play, but it's clear Benson passed some tests in a solid week of practice, according to the Chicago Tribune. "He knows our offense a lot better right now," Smith said. "I'll just say that."
Our View
Benson is still struggling with pass protection. Facing a team that likes to blitz won't help his playing time this week. Thomas Jones will see most of the carries this weekend, so Benson should stay on your bench. Eventually, the Bears will work their No. 1 pick into the offense, though.

Bengals: Perry returns to practice
The News
Running back Chris Perry, out because of a heat cramp, returned to practice Friday after missing time Thursday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Our View
Perry looked good during a brief stint this preseason. If he's ever completely healthy – he missed most of his rookie season with hernia-related injures – we'll have a better idea how the Bengals will use him. At this point, he'll see some third-down work and backup Rudi Johnson.

Texans: Mathis might miss first game
The News
Rookie receiver Jerome Mathis might have to miss the first game of his career because of a sore hamstring, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Eventually, Mathis will take over as the Texans' deep threat. However, Corey Bradford has a firm grasp on that role right now. Mathis is buried at No. 5 on the depth chart so, at this juncture, he has hardly any fantasy value.

Jets: Law ready for week one
The News
Ty Law, preparing for his first regular-season game with the Jets, yesterday pronounced himself ready to go, according to the New York Post. "Hopefully, I'm close to being me now," he said. "I felt good against the Giants [in one preseason appearance], but now the real deal is starting. You never know where you're at as an individual or as a team; you can only guess until the real fire starts going."
Our View
Law hasn't played a real NFL game since injuring his foot last season. Sunday will be a real test to see where he's at right now. When he's completely healthy, he's one of the best defensive backs in the game.

Jaguars: Taylor set for Sunday
The News
Running back Fred Taylor, who was limited to four carries in the preseason while rehabilitating his knee, said Friday that he got through practice without any problems and will be ready to go against the Seahawks, according to the Florida Times-Union.
Our View
Taylor should see around 20 carries in Sunday's tilt. He's coming off a season where he rushed for 1,224 yards but only two rushing touchdowns. To be on the safe side, you'll want to handcuff him to LaBrandon Toefield.

The News
Despite just three days of practice with his new team, receiver Quincy Morgan, who was signed Tuesday after being released by Dallas, will be the No. 4 receiver when the Steelers use their four-wide receiver package against the Titans, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View
In terms of fantasy news, this is nothing. Morgan, at best, will see a few balls thrown his way. Even in the deepest of leagues, he shouldn't be in a starting lineup.

49ers: Johnson still doubtful
The News
49ers' tight end Eric Johnson is still expected to miss week one with a partially torn plantar fascia. The San Jose Mercury News reports that Steve Bush and rookie Billy Bajema are expected to fill in for Johnson when the Niners face the Rams on Sunday. The Niners have yet to establish a timetable for Johnson's return.
Our View
Bush has only scored three times in his eight-year career and Bajema is a rookie, so fantasy owners should look elsewhere for tight end help this week.

Seahawks: Dyson named starter
The News
Seahawks' head coach Mike Holmgren finally got around to naming his starting left cornerback on Friday. Andre Dyson got the nod over Kelly Herndon, which was hardly a surprise given that Dyson had worked with the starters in practice all week. "It could almost be a coin flip," Holmgren told the Seattle Times. "Andre is a good ball guy. He has been a starter longer in his career and he's a little more experienced." Herndon will be featured as the nickelback in week one.
Our View
The roles could be reversed quickly if Dyson struggles early against the Jaguars on Sunday. Teams targeted Dyson in the passing game during the preseason over starting right cornerback Marcus Trufant. If that trend continues in the regular season, it would actually work to the advantage of Dyson's fantasy owners because he would have plenty of opportunities to make plays.

Vikings: Kleinsasser ready to go
The News
Vikings tight end Jim Kleinsasser, who strained his left groin during practice on Monday and was listed as "probable" on the injury report, had a good week of practice and will start in week one against the Buccaneers. "He's looked better in practice this week than at any point since training camp started," head coach Mike Tice told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Friday. Kleinsasser has fully recovered from the reconstructive surgery on his right knee that he underwent a year ago.
Our View
A healthy Kleinsasser means, first and foremost, good things for the Vikings' running game, as he is one of the top run-blocking tight ends in the league.

49ers: Nolan to stick with Rattay
The News
49ers' head coach Mike Nolan does not have a plan to work rookie quarterback Alex Smith into action. "In all fairness to Tim (Rattay) and even the football team, I don't have a timetable," Nolan told the San Jose Mercury News on Friday. "The season will take care of itself, as far as what does happen. Going into it, if I had a perfect situation, it would stay status quo because I believe we would be getting better and better and winning." Rattay will start on Sunday against the Rams.
Our View
We're not taking Nolan's comments too seriously. It's not like he could come out and say that he plans to start Smith before week 10. That being said, we think the first-year head coach was being sincere when he said he hopes to stick with Rattay because that would mean the team is winning. The only problem is that the Niners are not expected to be legitimate contenders this year, so we expect to see the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft replace Rattay at some point this season.

Steelers: Miller ready to contribute in red zone
The News
Steelers' rookie tight end Heath Miller is ready to live up to his "Big Money" moniker. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports the team deliberately kept him under wraps during the preseason because they did not want to give away their plans, but the general plan seems obvious. "The impressive thing is his hands—he has great hands," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger told the Post-Gazette. "I think he's going to be a very valuable person, especially when we get in the red zone. You got a guy who's big and strong, he can go up and make a catch when it matters. That's the thing you have to have."
Our View
Did you hear that? Miller is going to be valuable in the red zone. That might not be news to those of you who watched him set records in college or were paying attention when the Steelers drafted him in the first round this spring. But if you are going into week one with a question mark at tight end, you might just want to consider Miller, who has a soft matchup against the Titans.

Buccaneers: Clayton has a simple plan
The News
Buccaneers' wide receiver Michael Clayton's goal for 2005 is simple. "I'm going to score more," Clayton told the Tampa Tribune on Friday. "When I get an opportunity to catch the ball this year, I'm going to score. That's going to be the big difference you see between last year and this year. Last year I was just worried about catching the ball. I was a rookie, so it was catch the ball, get what you can, and go down. This year, there's going to be a little more thought process to it." Clayton finished last season with 80 receptions for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns.
Our View
This is music to the ears of Clayton owners. The second-year wide receiver became the 14th wide receiver in league history to top the 1,000-yard mark as a rookie, but his touchdown total left a little to be desired. If he maintains his yardage numbers and adds to the touchdown count, there's no doubt that Clayton will be a top-10 fantasy receiver by season's end.

Falcons: Hall anxious to face Owens
The News
Falcons' cornerback DeAngelo Hall isn't shying away from the challenge that Terrell Owens will give him on Monday night. "I can't wait to see how I match up against him," Hall told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday. "Atlanta fans want to know how I'll match up against him. The football world wants to know." Hall started 10 games last season and finished with 28 tackles and two interceptions.
Our View
The football world wants to know? We're high on DeAngelo, but it's easy to see why he drew comparisons to Deion Sanders when the Falcons selected him with the No. 8 overall pick in 2004. Owens will be a big part of the Eagles' game plan on Monday night, so Hall should get plenty of opportunities to see how he measures up with the controversial wide receiver.

Colts: Clark might be a game-time decision
The News
Colts tight end Dallas Clark might be a game-time decision for their Sunday night game against the Ravens because of a concussion he suffered two weeks ago against the Broncos. Clark practiced, but was held out of contact drills all week and underwent neurological testing Friday. The Associated Press reports he will be examined by team doctors on Saturday morning.
Our View
It's unclear whether Clark will learn whether he has medical clearance on Saturday or if he'll have to wait for Sunday night. Fantasy owners should definitely have a Plan B at tight end for week one if Clark is your regular starter, as the chances are good we won't learn his fate until Sunday night—several hours after lineups are set for the week.

Ravens: Boller knocked out in the third quarter
The News
Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller left Sunday night's game against the Colts after suffering a hyperextended toe. It occurred while he was being sacked by Larry Tripplett in the third quarter.
Our View
Anthony Wright will be the Ravens' quarterback while Boller is out. He's not a reasonable fantasy option, but hopefully he can do a good enough under center job that defenses will be unable to crowd the box against Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor.

Packers: Walker could be done for season
The News
The Green Bay Press-Gazette is reporting that wide receiver Javon Walker is expected to miss the rest of the season with what the team believes is a torn ACL in his knee. Walker will undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the extent of the injury. Walker was third in the NFL in receiving yards a year ago with 1,382 yards and sixth in the league in receiving touchdowns with 12.
Our View
Losing Walker, a top-five fantasy wide receiver, would be a huge blow for fantasy owners and the Packers. Clearly, Brett Favre would lose one of his most dynamic weapons. Donald Driver would be in line for more looks, but he would also see quite a bit more attention from opposing defenses. We'll provide more of the injury's consequences as soon as we can confirm its extent.

Lions: Williams debuts with a score
The News
Rookie wideout Mike Williams had a catch and a touchdown in his NFL debut on Sunday.
Our View
Williams didn't see a lot of time in his first game, but he will be used around the goal line all season and is worth a roster spot in touchdown-heavy league.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 8:28 PM ET
Cardinals: Fitzgerald grabs 13 balls
The News
Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald had 13 catches for 155 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's loss to the Giants.
Our View
Fitzgerald benefited from the Cardinals playing from behind all day because it seemed like the ball was always in the air when the Cards were on offense. This was his first 100-yard day of his career, but we have a feeling it won't be his last.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 8:24 PM ET
Cowboys: Crayton catches six passes
The News
Cowboys wideout Patrick Crayton made six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's game against the Chargers.
Our View
The Cowboys are high on Crayton and the youngster was Bledsoe's favorite target on Sunday. He seems to have developed some chemistry with Drew and may be worth a fantasy roster spot if he can prove this week was not a fluke.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 8:22 PM ET
Chargers: McCardell starts the season off right
The News
Chargers receiver Keenan McCardell caught nine passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys on Sunday.
Our View
It's about time the acquisition of McCardell paid off for the Chargers. This was the first time Keenan has given his fantasy owners a 100-yard performance since arriving in San Diego.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 8:04 PM ET
Rams: Bulger turns in a big performance
The News
Rams quarterback Marc Bulger threw for 362 yards and two scores during Sunday's loss to the 49ers. He also had two rushes for eight yards.
Our View
Bulger lit up the Niners for a huge yardage day but was unable to translate that into more than two scores. He threw for over 300 yards four times last season and only once against a division foe.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 7:49 PM ET
Cowboys: Bledsoe throws for three scores
The News
Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe went 18-for-24 with three touchdowns during Sunday's 28-24 win over the Chargers. He even ran four times for seven yards.
Our View
Seven rushing yards may end up as Bledsoe's season high. The Chargers were poor against the pass last season and getting lit up for three scores by Drew is a strong indication nothing will be different this year.

Colts: Clark out
The News
Colts tight end Dallas Clark will not play Sunday night against the Ravens because of a concussion he suffered in the preseason. Ben
Our View
Get Clark out of your lineup if you still can. Hartsock is nowhere near the receiving threat Clark is and makes a poor fantasy option against the Ravens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 7:24 PM ET
Giants: Shockey hurts his ankle
The News
Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey hurt his left ankle late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's win over the Cardinals. He was attended to on the sidelines and didn't return to the game.
Our View
Shockey was visibly upset on the sidelines, but hopefully that was out due to frustration of being hurt and not because he was in serious pain.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 6:36 PM ET
Steelers: Parker gains over 200 total yards
The News
Steelers running back Willie Parker accumulated 161 yards on the ground and 48 via the air in Sunday's 34-7 win over the Titans. He also had an11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Our View
Parker's stats are even more impressive when you consider he was pulled before the fourth quarter began. He'll be the Steelers' starter until Duce Staley and Jerome Bettis return, and maybe even after.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 6:28 PM ET
Bengals: Palmer throws two scores
The News
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 27-13 win over the Browns.
Our View
Palmer is building upon the success he had at the end of last season. He had over 400 yards and four touchdowns last time he faced the Browns, but most fantasy team will be satisfied if he keeps producing like he did Sunday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 6:02 PM ET
Packers: Walker carted to the locker room
The News
Packers wide receiver Javon Walker injured his right leg during the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Lions. He was carted off to the locker room for further evaluation.
Our View
Walker hurt the leg on a long pass play that was called back by a penalty he committed. His return is doubtful and we'll update his condition once more information is available.

September 11, 2005 5:49 PM ET
Panthers: Smith has a big day
The News
Steve Smith is back. The fiery Panthers wideout caught eight passes for 138 yards and a touchdown against the Saints.
Our View
Jake Delhomme targeted Smith 16 times on Sunday, so clearly he knows who his top offensive weapon is. Steve has clearly regained all the speed and moves that led to his 1,100-yard season in 2003.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 5:45 PM ET
Saints: McAllister finds the end zone twice
The News
Saints running back Deuce McAllister ran for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns during week one's win over the Panthers. He also had two catches for five yards.
Our View
McAllister's two touchdowns will make fantasy owners very happy, but his yardage total left a bit to be desired. However, we can't complain too much considering he went up against a very tough Panther defense. He should find more running room next week against the Giants, who ranked 28th against the run last season.

Redskins: Ramsey has a sprained neck
The News
Quarterback Patrick Ramsey left the Redskins' week one game against the Bears with a sprained neck.
Our View
There is no word yet from the Redskins on how serious the injury is or if Ramsey will be able to suit up for next week's tilt against the Cowboys. Not to imply he should be in your lineup even if he was healthy.

Jaguars: Smith scores twice
The News
Jaguars wideout Jimmy Smith had 130 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches in week one's win over the Seahawks.
Our View
Smith is a perennial 1,000-yard performer, but he highly doubt he'll continue on his 32-touchdown pace this season.

September 11, 2005 4:02 PM ET
Vikings: Culpepper held scoreless
The News
Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper threw for 233 yards and three interceptions during Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers. He also lost two fumbles.
Our View
This is the first time Culpepper has been held without a touchdown pass since week 12 of the 2003 season. He had two scores called back due to penalties, but the Vikes' offense didn't look nearly as crisp Sunday as it did during the preseason.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chargers: Merriman inactive
The News
Chargers rookie Shawne Merriman is inactive for week one's game against the Cowboys. He was upgraded from questionable to probable on the team's injury report Friday.
Our View
Merriman would have be rushing from the outside all day and it is hard to imagine Drew Bledsoe could outrun a glacier at this point in his career, much less Shawne. He should be ready for next week's contest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 3:34 PM ET
49ers: Johnson out with strained arch
The News
Tight end Eric Johnson will miss the season opener against the Rams because of a strained right arch. He's the only 49ers regular likely to miss the opener.
Our View
With Johnson unable to play, the 49ers will need Steve Bush and rookie Billy Bajema to step up. Neither is worthy of fantasy considering. For that matter, it's difficult calling any 'Niner fantasy worthy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 3:32 PM ET
Chargers: Brees will start
The News
Drew Brees, who sprained his ankle during the final preseason game, will start Sunday against the Cowboys.
Our View
It's not surprising to see Brees in the lineup, as he had 10 days to recover. The Cowboys defense will send the house at him most of the day. However, Brees will make the necessary reads and have a modest day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 3:21 PM ET
Giants: Eli's playing
The News
Giants quarterback Eli Manning is active and starting Sunday's tilt with the Cardinals. The quarterback, who was listed as probable going into today, has been dealing with an elbow sprain that occurred during the preseason.
Our View
Manning is ready to go, but fantasy owners should be using another option this week. The Cardinals have an improving defense that ended last season as the ninth best unit in the league against the pass.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 2:54 PM ET
Bengals: Johnson returns from the locker room
The News
Bengals receiver Chad Johnson was helped to the locker room in the third quarter of Sunday's game with a leg injury but returned later in the quarter.
Our View
Johnson caught a pass in his first series back, so it appears he is over the leg issues and ready to continue as Carson Palmers' top target.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 2:02 PM ET
Redskins: Ramsey heads out with an injury
The News
Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey left the field in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Bears with an injury that occurred when he was sacked by Lance Briggs.
Our View
The fantasy world will hardly miss Ramsey and he shouldn't have been in your lineup today against the Bears, anyways. Mark Brunell will now play quarterback for the Skins. Feel free to insert your own joke here.

Broncos: Anderson out with a rib injury
The News
Broncos running back Mike Anderson was sent to the locker room during the first quarter of Sunday's game with a rib injury. His return is doubtful.
Our View
Tatum Bell will be the primary back for the Broncos while Anderson is out. He will likely be the featured back for the remainder of this game and any other games Anderson has to miss.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:37 PM ET
Bengals: Washington active for today's game
The News
Bengals wide receiver Kelley Washington is active for today's game after being listed as questionable for much of the week with a hamstring injury.
Our View
Washington was a frequent target of quarterback Carson Palmer this preseason. He'll get any of Chad Johnson or T.J. Houshmandzadeh's leftovers, which probably won't amount to anything significant for fantasy owners.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:20 PM ET
Bills: McGahee leaves with an injury, returns
The News
Bills running back Willis McGahee left today's game against the Texans in the first quarter with an apparent leg injury but returned to the field one series later.
Our View
We'll update McGahee's status once more information is available. Shaud Williams got the carries while McGahee was out, but he has no fantasy value unless Willis misses an extended period of time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:17 PM ET
Seahawks: Mili inactive because of intestine blockage
The News
Tight end Itula Mili is inactive against the Jaguars Sunday because a blockage in his intestine.
Our View
Mili spent Thursday in the hospital and didn't travel with the team to Jacksonville, but he thought there was an outside chance he would fly into Florida on Saturday. With Mili not in the starting lineup, Jerramy Stevens will play in integral part of the Seahawks' offense. Stevens did score in the last preseason game against the Vikings; however, the Jags did not allow a tight end touchdown during the last five games last season, so don't count on him hitting paydirt.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:14 PM ET
Browns: Droughns gets the start
The News
Running back Reuben Droughns will get the start for the Browns today against the Bengals.
Our View
The Browns running back situation has been muddy, but Lee Suggs starts this season the same way he did last year—with an injury, this time a high ankle sprain. Last time the Ohio rivals faced each other, William Green got the start and ran for 75 yards and a touchdown. While Green will likely get carries, Droughns is the back worthy of a lineup spot in larger leagues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:14 PM ET
Bears: Benson active
The News
As expected, Bears rookie running back Chris Benson is active for today's season opener at Washington. He will backup starter Thomas Jones.
Our View
Benson's workload is a huge question mark, and the 'Skins ranked second in the NFL against the run a year ago. Leave Cedric on the pine.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:11 PM ET
Titans: Brown will start, Henry active
The News
Running back Chris Brown will start for the Titans on Sunday in Pittsburgh. Backup Travis Henry is active despite a toe injury and will see action behind Brown.
Our View
Considering the Steelers ranked first against the run last year, and first in terms of points allowed, it's tough to justify using either Brown or Henry since they are sharing the load. Opt for a back with a bigger workload and a better matchup.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:09 PM ET
Chiefs: Green good to go
The News
Chiefs quarterback Trent Green will suit up and start today's game against the Jets. He was listed as probable all week after undergoing minor surgery to improve the circulation in his league.
Our View
If you fretted over the news of Green's surgery, consider this your final confirmation that he's ready to go.

Bengals: Rudi demoted, Perry starting
The News
Bengals running back Chris Perry will start today's game against the Browns. Regular starter Rudi Johnson has been benched for violating a team rule. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Rudi was late to a team meeting.
Our View
Johnson ran for over 200 yards last time he faced the Browns, so this news dampers our expectations for him quite a bit. While he is technically a backup, fantasy owners may still want to roll the dice on him in hopes that he is put into the backfield early in the game and all is forgiven.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 12:01 PM ET
Broncos: Dayne inactive
The News
Broncos running back Ron Dayne, third on the depth chart, has been declared inactive for the Broncos season opener at Miami.
Our View
Dayne did not appear on the injury report this week, so this is a healthy scratch. Mike Anderson will carry the load for the Broncos and Tatum Bell will back him up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 11:33 AM ET
Panthers: Davis will start
The News
Fanball has learned that the Panthers will be starting Stephen Davis at running back for today's game against the Saints. DeShaun Foster will serve as his backup.
Our View
We expect Davis to receive about 15 carries during today's game and Foster to get most of the rest. Neither is a very attractive fantasy option, but if you have to use one of them today, go with Davis.

Colts: Clark expected to travel with the team
The News
Colts tight end Dallas Clark took his neuro-psychological test Saturday morning and was expected to make the trip to Baltimore, reports the Indianapolis Star. Tests results have not been released. Clark is questionable for tonight's game due to his concussion.
Our View
Indy is the late game tonight, so fantasy owners will likely have to make a decision on Clark before the inactive list is announced. He's been held out of contact drills all week, so fantasy owners should be using another option unless it confirmed he'll play before your lineups are due.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 11, 2005 11:18 AM ET
Chiefs: Waters a game-time decision
The News
Chiefs All-Pro offensive lineman Brian Waters will be a game-time decision for today's game against the Jets due to back spasms, reports ESPN.
Our View
Waters is one of the best guards in the game and losing him would be reason to slightly lower your expectations for Priest Holmes today. Not enough to get him out of you lineup, however.

Vikings: Bennett expected to start again
The News
Vikings head coach Mike Tice said during his Monday press conference that he expects Michael Bennett to be his starting running back this week against the Bengals. Bennett ran six times for a loss of one yard during week one's loss to the Buccaneers.
Our View
Moe Williams started the game for the Vikings in week one, but Bennett was brought in on the third play and finished tied with Williams for the team high in carries with six. Tice said Williams will be the third-down back this week, but fantasy owners should avoid this backfield if at all possible.

Lions: Other kickers being brought in
The News
The Lions will bring in other kickers this week in case Jason Hanson's injured hamstring hinders him next week against the Bears. "We are going to cover all of our bases and bring in some kickers to try out and work out just in case," head coach Steve Mariucci said in his Monday press conference. "One alternative would be to sign another kicker and let him kick until Jason feels better, the other alternative might be to keep him kicking the short stuff and using an alternative for kickoffs or going for it on fourth downs or long field goals." Hanson hurt his hammy Sunday against the Packers.
Our View
We'll follow Hanson's progress this week so fantasy owners know if he will be available Sunday. If he is full strength by Sunday, he should be in your lineup because he has booted 13 field goals in his last five games against the Bears.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cowboys: Price may not suit up next week
The News
The Cowboys are a team deep at wideout and that depth may make the recently-signed Peerless Price a healthy scratch again next week, reports the team's website. "That's not without some deliberation here, without question," head coach Bill Parcells said during his Monday press conference about which wideout will not play. "I've got three receivers here, and I think with [Patrick] Crayton coming on like he is, I'm sure that I want to play him. I really don't know how this is going to play out. I don't really know."
Our View
Crayton's nice game on Sunday may cost Price another week or Parcells may opt to go with seven linemen and dress all his wideouts. Either way, Peerless has no fantasy value next week.

Cardinals: Hodgins out for the year
The News
Cardinals fullback James Hodgins will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL during Sunday's loss to the Giants.
Our View
Perhaps Hodgins should explore another line of work. He has played only one game since the 2003 season because of injuries.

Titans: Bulluck expects to play
The News
Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck is dealing with a sore calf, but head coach Jeff Fisher expects him to play Sunday against the Ravens. "He says he will [play]," Fisher said in weekly press conference. "He has been a quick healer. I think he'll be okay."
Our View
Having Bulluck in the lineup will allow the Titans to be better suited to stop Jamal Lewis and the Ravens' running game. Considering Anthony Wright will be under center for Baltimore, we expect to see plenty of running plays from Brian Billick's crew.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 12, 2005 9:24 PM ET
Vikings: Cowart may miss week two
The News
Vikings middle linebacker Sam Cowart is suffering from a strained left calf and is considered day-to-day, head coach Mike Tice said in his weekly press conference on Monday.
Our View
The loss of Cowert would allow some more running room in the middle next Sunday for Rudi Johnson, who ran for 126 yards against the Browns in week one.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 12, 2005 9:07 PM ET
Titans: Pac Man may debut next week
The News
Titans cornerback Pacman Jones didn't suit up against the Steelers on Sunday, but he may play his first NFL game in week two against the Ravens, reports the Nashville Tennessean. "I expect Pac to be active very shortly," head coach Jeff Fisher told the paper. "It could be as soon as this weekend. Another week in the scheme, he'll be more comfortable and we can work him in there and also work him into kickoff return duties."
Our View
Jones looked lost as a punt returner during the preseason and his extended holdout cost him an opportunity to get comfortable with the Titans' defense schemes before the season started. He's got plenty of raw talent, but yet to do anything on the field to justify the expectations that come with being the No. 6 pick.

Redskins: Ramsey requests a trade
The News
Quarterback Patrick Ramsey has requested a trade from the Redskins after being benched by head coach Joe Gibbs, reports ESPN. He suffered a sprained neck during Sunday's loss to the Bears, but would have been able to return if Gibbs had wanted him to play.
Our View
If the Redskins can get anything of value for Ramsey, they will like move him because they've already invested a No. 1 pick in Jason Campbell and expect him to be their quarterback of the future. Patrick's future fantasy value will depend on where he ends up.

Falcons: Mathis gets the boot before the game starts
The News
Falcons cornerback Kevin Mathis was ejected from Monday night's game against the Eagles before it began for throwing a punch at Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter in a pregame melee.
Our View
The loss of Mathis will open up the passing game some more for Donovan McNabb and his receiving corps, especially Terrell Owens.

Eagles: Trotter ejected before the game begins
The News
Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter was ejected from Monday night's game for throwing punches in a pregame scuffle.
Our View
Losing Trotter is a big blow to the Eagles' run defense, which is not good news for a team facing the league's top rushing attack.

Jaguars: Taylor feeling fine
The News
Jaguars running back Fred Taylor and his surgically repaired left knee felt fine Monday after receiving 20 carries against the Seahawks on Sunday. "Each game I'm going to get better,' Taylor told the Associated Press. "That's the plan. I'm going to get this thing back to where I was.'
Our View
It's great to hear Taylor's knee is feeling good after his first real test, but we've been burned by Fragile Freddie too many times before to declare him completely healthy at this point. At least it looks like he'll be good to go against the Colts next week. He's run for over 100 yards in thee of his last four games against Indy.

Vikings: McKinnie hurts his foot
The News
Vikings offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie had to be carted to the locker room with strained left foot after the team's final offensive play of the game Sunday, but head coach Mike Tice believes he'll be in the lineup next week. "He should be good to go on [next] Sunday," Tice said in his Monday press conference. "We'll see as the week progresses. Otherwise Goldberg will be out of that spot." Adam Goldberg would start if McKinnie, who was in a walking boot Monday, can't go.
Our View
The Vikings' offensive line is already reeling from the loss of center Matt Birk and the poor performance of the running game against the Buccaneers. If one is to believe Tice, McKinnie will be in the lineup Sunday, but we'll know more once the injury report is released Wednesday.

Ravens: Boller expected to miss Sunday's game
The News
Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller is expected to miss week two's game against the Titans with a hyperextended right big toe, reports the Associated Press. Anthony Wright will get the start because of the injury, which occurred while Boller was being sacked during a loss to the Colts. Wright had 214 yards and two interceptions after taking over for Boller.
Our View
Wright will face a soft Titans defense, but he hasn't shown enough at the pro level to be worthy of a spot in your fantasy lineup next week. Boller will get his job back once he is healthy.

Redskins: Brunell will start next week
The News
The Redskins will start Mark Brunell at quarterback next Monday against the Cowboys instead of Patrick Ramsey, despite the fact Ramsey will be healthy enough to play, reports ESPN.com. Ramsey left Sunday's game against the Bears after suffering a sprained neck. "This is something that is extremely hard," head coach Joe Gibbs said Monday. "You don't like doing this. I don't. Sometimes you don't chart the circumstances or what happens -- it just happens. Certainly it wasn't the plan I had going in, but sometimes plans change, and I think you do the best you can in dealing with it."
Our View
Despite his comments, Gibbs has something of a reputation for switching quarterbacks. He benched Brunell in favor of Ramsey after several ineffective games last season and will probably end up doing so again this year. This is a situation fantasy owners need to avoid.

Saints: Home games to be played at San Antonio and LSU
The News
The Saints will play four of their remaining home games at LSU's Tiger Stadium and three at the Alamodome in San Antonio, the NFL announced Monday afternoon. The games at LSU will take place in weeks 8, 9, 13, and 15. The San Antonio games will occur during weeks 4, 6, and 16.
Our View
The dates and times of the games have not been announced yet, but we'll pass along that information once it is released. It is possible that the Saints will be taking part in more Monday night doubleheader like they are schedule to next week. The full extent of damage done to the Superdome is still unknown and it is possible the Saints will never play there again.

Bengals: Watson done for the year
The News
Bengals running back Kenny Watson was placed on injured reserve Monday with a torn bicep. He suffered the injury during week one's win over the Browns.
Our View
Watson had no fantasy value because he was stuck behind Rudi Johnson and Chris Perry on the Bengals' depth chart.

Panthers: Jenkins out for the year
The News
Coach John Fox announced in his news conference Monday that defensive tackle Kris Jenkins has a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season. Jenkins was injured when he broke through the line and tried to tackle Saints running back Deuce McAllister in the backfield in the first quarter. He managed to get only an arm on McAllister before falling to the ground.
Our View
This is a huge blow to Carolina's defense. Jenkins, a two-time Pro Bowler, played only the first four games last year before being sidelined with a left shoulder injury.

Bengals: Johnson needs fluid replacement to counter cramps
The News
Wide receiver Chad Johnson needed two IV fluid bags to counter leg cramps during the game, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Our View
Two IVs? What ever happened to popping a Midol and drinking a few cups of water? Johnson still managed to led the Bengals with nine receptions for 91 yards, the most catches he has had in any of his five NFL openers.

49ers: Morton exits with a concussion
The News
Receiver Johnnie Morton was knocked out of Sunday's game against the Rams late in the first half with a concussion, according to the Associated Press. Morton was hurt when he landed on the ball and got tackled by DeJuan Groce while making 30-yard catch two minutes before halftime.
Our View
Morton was examined on the sideline, and the 49ers said he wouldn't return. He'll likely be listed as day-to-day this week. Both Brandon Lloyd and Arnaz Battle caught touchdown passes for the 49ers Sunday.

Chiefs: Roaf likely to miss upcoming game
The News
Ten-time Pro Bowl left tackle Willie Roaf left Sunday's game with an injured hamstring, according to the Associated Press.
Our View
Coach Dick Vermeil said he doubted Roaf would be ready for this week's game at Oakland. Jordan Black, who was starting at right tackle, moved over for Roaf and Chris Bober came in at right tackle. This injury would be manageable if not for the fact that the line was already weakened by the four-game suspension of John Welbourn, who could play both guard and tackle.

Chiefs: Surtain leaves with a concussion
The News
Cornerback Patrick Surtain was injured at the end of one of the day's most exciting plays. He intercepted Chad Pennington's pass and then turned upfield 53 yards before guard Brandon Moore brought him down hard. Surtain lay on the ground several minutes and then walked off on wobbly legs with what was described as a concussion, according to the Associated Press.
Our View
Coach Dick Vermeil didn't' think Surtain's injury was serious and he expects him ready for this week's game against the Raiders.

Dolphins: Taylor lines up at tight end
The News
Defensive end Jason Taylor made his debut as a tight end and drew double coverage, allowing Gus Frerotte to throw a touchdown pass to uncovered tight end Randy McMichael, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
Our View
There must be something in the Florida water. The Bucs tried this shtick a few years back when they unleashed Warren Sapp at tight end, and Sapp actually hit paydirt. Don't get too excited, though, as it's not time to acquire Taylor.

Packers: Walker will miss the rest of the season
The News
The Packers will have to move on without their No. 1 wide receiver. Javon Walker will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Walker suffered the injury midway through the third quarter of their week one loss to the Lions. The Packers will determine the full extent of the injury Monday through diagnostic tests. However, team physician Patrick McKenzie told Sherman that it was the dreaded torn ACL, which will require reconstructive surgery and anywhere from 6-to-12 months of rehabilitation.
Our View
Without Walker in the lineup, Donald Driver will move from split end to flanker and Robert Ferguson will slide to split end. Lucky for the Packers, receiver is the deepest position on the club, with Antonio Chatman and rookie Terrance Murphy as backups. That said, losing Walker is a devastating blow to a team that looked miserable against the Lions. Brett Favre's fantasy value takes a serious hit when you couple week one's poor showing with the loss of his best weapon.

Redskins: Jansen breaks his other thumb
The News
Redskins right tackle Jon Jansen broke his right thumb during Sunday's win over the Bears. He fractured his left thumb just six days earlier and was wearing a cast on his left hand during the contest. The Washington Post reports that Jansen will now sport a similar cast on his right hand.
Our View
Seinfeld fans will laugh with thoughts of Kramer's friend Mike Moffitt walking around with two big casts on his hands, but Jansen won't be quite so limited. He'll continue to play despite these fractures.
