Browns: Winslow to have surgery today
The News
Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair his torn right ACL. Winslow suffered the injury in a motorcycle accident May 1. According to the Akron Beacon-Journal, Winslow also suffered a lacerated liver and kidney, a bruised right shoulder, and a hairline fracture of the femur. The Browns' first-round pick from 2004 told the Beacon-Journal that all the injuries are healed except for the torn ACL.
Our View
Typical rehab for an ACL injury is nine months, which means Winslow will miss all of his sophomore season. K2 has been attending Browns' practices wearing a knee brace and getting advice from last year's second-round pick, safety Sean Jones, who is back this year after tearing his ACL in minicamp last season.

Texans: Gaffney sits
The News
Texans wide receiver Jabar Gaffney won't participate in team drills until August as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery.
Our View
Gaffney's absence will give Houston coaches the opportunity to look at rookie Jerome Mathis, though he's more likely to take Corey Bradford's place. Gaffney is relatively secure as the Texans' No. 2 receiver, though he yet to demonstrate enough acumen to alleviate the double teams Andre Johnson continues to face.

Jaguars: Jones resigned to position switch
The News
Jaguars fullback Greg Jones isn't happy about his switch from running back, but he's accepted his fate. "They told me they wanted me to be the next Mike Alstott," Jones told the Florida Times Union. "So I knew [fullback] is what they might have gotten me for. It wasn't like I was blindsided."
Our View
The Jags plan to take advantage of the short-yardage ability Jones demonstrated last season by converting seven of his nine third-and-one carries. He's actually 10 pounds lighter than when he played running back last year, but he thought the extra weight might have slowed him down and he's also in better shape this season.

Lions: Drummond has one day left to sign
The News
Lions' Pro Bowl return man Eddie Drummond faces a Wednesday deadline to sign the one-year, $1.43 million tender offer from the team. If he elects not to sign, the Lions have the option of reducing the offer to $450,000.
Our View
Drummond is a restricted free agent and his agent is (you guessed it) Drew Rosenhaus. However, the good news is that Eddie is not holding out. Thus, we would expect the two sides to come together on a reasonable conclusion to the matter. You don't get that with a Rosenhaus client too often.

Bears: Tank arrested on gun charge
The News
Bears defensive tackle Terry "Tank" Johnson was arrested early Sunday in Chicago on charges that he was carrying a handgun. The Bears' 2004 second round pick was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon and has a court date on Friday.
Our View
Sigh. You would think that with all the trouble players are getting in around the league with guns, the teams would be extra certain to make sure all the guys knew the local rules and regulations.

Browns: Droughns won't hold out
The News
Browns running back Reuben Droughns, who walked out of the team's offseason workouts and threatened to skip training camp unless his contract was reworked, has put those holdout plans aside. "The way I feel is that the way I get a new deal is to prove myself on the field and everything upstairs will take care of itself," Droughns told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "[My contract] is something I can't control. What I can control is what I do in this building."
Our View
Droughns is currently slotted behind Lee Suggs on the depth chart, and William Green is making a comeback as well. Browns coach Romeo Crennel indicated there's room for all three on the roster, but if they're all getting carries the Cleveland backfield could quickly become a fantasy nightmare.

Colts: Doss suspended for two games
The News
The NFL suspended Colts safety Mike Doss for the first two games of the 2005 season after Doss pleaded no contest to misdemeanor gun charges. Doss initially faced a felony weapons charge and three misdemeanors after being arrested in Akron May 29, when he fired a gun into the air outside a restaurant. The felony charge was reduced in exchange for his guilty plea, and Doss was sentenced to 40 hours community service and fined $1,000. His 180-day jail sentence was suspended.
Our View
Doss, the Colts' second-round pick in 2003, will miss Indy's September 11 opener against the Ravens and September 18 game against the Jaguars.

Jaguars: Taylor still sidelined
The News
Jaguars running back Fred Taylor has been limited to running on Wednesday and Thursday, the two days workouts are closed to the media. The team continues to insist Taylor will be ready for the start of training camp July 30, but Jaguars vice president of player personnel James Harris confirmed to the Florida Times Union that the team has "had some conversations" regarding a trade for disgruntled Bills back Travis Henry.
Our View
Harris added that the team hasn't had any conversations about Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander, despite published reports to the contrary, and that there haven't been any negotiations involving Henry. Fantasy drafts held before the start of camp will see Taylor slide significantly, and even if he's at full go in August his reputation has permanently impacted his fantasy value.

Titans: Troupe on schedule to return for opener
The News
Titans tight end Ben Troupe, who underwent surgery on his fractured left foot last month, expects to be back with the team well in advance of the September 11 regular season opener. "The doctor said everything went well," Troupe told The Tennessean. "If you could have a pretty good break, I did, I guess. I just have to stay in the training room and hope for the best. I do see myself being back hopefully by middle if not late training camp."
Our View
Troupe had a screw inserted in his foot to repair the fractured fifth metatarsal, but he has been attending practices wearing a protective boot. New offensive coordinator Norm Chow has big plans for Troupe, moving him around in the offense to create matchup problems. If he picks up where he left off at the end of last season, Troupe will certainly be worthy of fantasy attention.

Ravens: Heap gets largest tight end contract
The News
The Ravens made Todd Heap the highest-paid tight end in NFL history Tuesday, signing him to a six-year contract extension with an $11 million signing bonus and a total value of $30 million. The deal locks Heap up through the 2011 season. "You put your money where your mouth is," Ravens coach Brian Billick told the Baltimore Sun. "You can talk the rhetoric, but when it comes time for a player's situation to be addressed, you step up and make him the highest-paid tight end in the league. He's deserving of that."
Our View
Heap is rehabilitating his surgically repaired ankle and shoulder in Arizona and may not return to full go until midway through training camp, but the Ravens don't seem to have any qualms about his health. That's reassuring for those who rank Heap among the elite fantasy tight ends and will treat him as such on draft day.

Browns: Heinrich goes under the knife
The News
Browns tight end Keith Heinrich underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL and will miss the 2005 season. Heinrich suffered the injury in the team's passing camp two weeks ago.
Our View
Heinrich missed nine games last season while recovering from a broken fibula. Aaron Shea and Steve Heiden are the remaining healthy veteran tight ends on the Cleveland roster.

Chiefs: Hakim signs
The News
The Chiefs signed wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim to a one-year contract Tuesday, but coach Dick Vermeil stressed the former Ram isn't guaranteed a starting gig or even a roster spot. "A position isn't going to be handed to him in a Christmas package," Vermeil told the Kansas City Star. "He's going to have to compete, and he knows that."
Our View
Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker sit atop the Chiefs' depth chart, but Hakim could make a push for playing time with a strong camp. Obviously, Vermeil knows what he's capable of, and that familiarity might give Az the benefit of the doubt if it's a tight battle.

Vikings: Culpepper scoffs at Moss comments
The News
Daunte Culpepper was asked on Tuesday what he thought about the recent comments made by former teammate Randy Moss in which he said Kerry Collins was a better quarterback. "When I first heard that, I figured maybe Randy had fallen and bumped his head to say something that crazy," Culpepper told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "All they've got to do is look at the numbers. I mean no disrespect to Kerry Collins. I understand that (Moss) has to say something good about his quarterback. But he didn't have to say anything that crazy."
Our View
We're with Daunte on this one. Collins' numbers don't compare to Culpepper's in any way, shape, or form. We certainly expect a serious uptick in Kerry's stats this season now that he has Superfreak to throw to, but even so there will be little comparison between the two signal callers.

Bears: Krenzel released
The News
The Bears released quarterback Craig Krenzel on Tuesday. Krenzel had fallen out of favor with the team since he declined the opportunity to go play in NFL Europe this offseason.
Our View
Krenzel's release is hardly a surprise. The Bears will go to camp with Rex Grossman, Chad Hutchinson, rookie Kyle Orton, and Kurt Kittner—who did go to Europe and led his team to a World Bowl title—on the roster. Hopefully, we'll just have to see Grossman play this season.

Vikings: Kicker remains a question mark
The News
The Vikings will enter training camp with competition for the kicking job between Aaron Elling and Paul Edinger. Or as head coach Mike Tice told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Tuesday, he has one "who can hit the ball through the end zone [Elling] and one kicker that can hit field goals [Edinger]. I need someone to emerge and do both consistently and very good."
Our View
We'd be quite surprised if Edinger did not win this competition. The Vikes have had to use two roster spots on kickers in recent seasons—one for field goals and another for kickoffs, but they would like to just keep one this year.

Seahawks: Engram assumes starting role
The News
Seahawks' head coach Mike Holmgren didn't take long to name a replacement for departed wide receiver Koren Robinson in the starting lineup. On Tuesday, Holmgren said the job currently belongs to Bobby Engram. "Right now, Bobby is our starting split end," Holmgren told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Jerome Pathon, Joe Jurevicius, and D.J. Hackett are expected to compete with Engram for the job during training camp.
Our View
It's hard to imagine Engram maintaining this role during the regular season, as Holmgren has been insistent in the past that Bobby was an ideal No. 3 receiver. In fact, Holmgren even went so far as to start the ancient Jerry Rice rather than Engram last year while Robinson was serving his many suspensions. In other words, fantasy owners shouldn't put too much trust in Engram just yet.

Saints: No charges filed against Smith
The News
Saints' safety Dwight Smith will not face charges relating to an incident that occurred in a fast food drive-thru back in March. Smith was arrested at the time on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly pointed a BB gun at two teenagers who approached his car seeking an autograph. "Dwight doesn't hit anybody, doesn't touch anybody, possesses no firearm, possesses nothing," Smith's attorney Kevin Hayslett told the St. Petersburg Times.
Our View
Smith's arrest cost him millions in free agency money. In fact, Hayslett claims that Smith was on the verge of signing a deal that was worth roughly $7 million more than he received from the Saints, who were able to sign the former Buccaneer at a discount price. Smith did not crack our top-50 defensive backs rankings for leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Buccaneers: Smith shown the door
The News
The Buccaneers released quarterback Akili Smith on Monday. The No. 3 overall pick in the 1999 draft was unable to hold down a starting job in NFL Eurorpe this year, which contributed to the team's decision. Smith had joined the Bucs as a free agent earlier.
Our View
It became obvious that Akili's run with the Bucs would be short when the team acquired Luke McCown in a trade with the Browns back in April. McCown was inserted into the No. 3 quarterback role behind starter Brian Griese and backup Chris Simms, which made Smith the odd man out.

Falcons: Price staying, at least for now
The News
Falcons' head coach Jim Mora has announced that wide receiver Peerless Price will not be released or traded before training camp opens next month. However, Mora said the veteran wideout must earn a spot on the roster. "I'm excited to give him a chance to compete to make the team and to improve along with the rest of the players," Mora told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday. "I know there's been speculation about Peerless and about his future here but, as an organization, we've decided that we want to see him compete and help this team be a better football team." Price finished last season with 45 receptions for 575 yards and three touchdowns.
Our View
Let's face it, the real reason Price is still on the roster is that the team would take a $5.7 million salary cap hit next season if they release him this year. Peerless is still listed as the No. 1 receiver on the Falcons' depth chart, but Mora would prefer to have a younger wideout such as Michael Jenkins or Roddy White to take over that role within the next season or two. In the meantime, Price is expected to be a starter, but fantasy owners should shy away due to his general lack of production during his two seasons with the Falcons.

Jets: Pennington begins light throwing
The News
Newsday is reporting that "people with knowledge of the situation" have confirmed that Chad Pennington has begun lobbing a football lightly after workouts. Pennington has yet to progress to full-scale throwing as he rehabs from surgery that repaired the torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The workouts have not been open to the media, nor have the Jets allowed him to speak to the media about his rehab. According to Newsday, coach Herman Edwards will reportedly provide an update on Pennington's progress at the end of June.
Our View
The Jets still expect Pennington to be ready for training camp. If he's throwing lobs now in practice, he's already throwing as well as he did for most of last season. We'll provide further updates once we hear them, but for now assume Pennington will be 100 percent healthy by the time the season starts.

Dolphins: Ricky on his way to Florida
The News
Ricky Williams reportedly packed up his belongings in a car and is driving from California to Florida. "Yes, he's driving there," Williams' agent Leigh Steinberg told the Miami Herald. Once he arrives in Miami, the Herald reports that he is expected to reenter the NFL's drug testing program and hopes to be reinstated by the league in time for the first day of Dolphins training camp on July 24.
Our View
It certainly appears as if things are moving along for Ricky reentering the league. There are still plenty of hurdles to jump, and we're not moving Ricky too far up our draft boards until we see him on the field playing football for the Dolphins or another NFL team.

Chargers: Polk tears Achilles tendon
The News
Chargers linebacker Carlos Polk suffered a torn left Achilles tendon during Wednesday's workout and will likely miss the upcoming season. Polk missed all but one game last year with a shoulder injury.
Our View
Polk is a reserve linebacker but one of the team's top special teams players, earning Special Teams Player of the Year honors in 2002 and Co-Player of the Year honors in 2003. He was named special teams captain last season prior to suffering a dislocated shoulder in the preseason that eventually required surgery.

Titans: Shulters released
The News
The Titans released safety Lance Shulters Thursday after the two sides were unable to agree on a new contract. Shulters is the sixth Titan starter relased for cap reasons this offseason.
Our View
Lamont Thompson is the likely candidate to replace Shulters in the starting lineup.

Vikings: Bennett back to full speed
The News
Following a few injury-shortened seasons, Michael Bennett enters training camp as the Vikings' top running back, and judging from his recent workouts he's all the way back to full speed. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Bennett recently ran a 9.91 100-meter dash. "The 9.91 would have been a fifth-place finish in the last Olympics in Athens, Greece," Vikings running backs coach Dean Dalton said. "He's smoking." Added quarterback Daunte Culpepper, "It's the best he has looked since he has been here."
Our View
Give Bennett his health and some room to run, and he's as dangerous as they come. However, he never seems to stay healthy no matter how good he looks or how fast he's moving. He's entering a contract year, so it would behoove him to take every precaution. If (and this is a big if) he stays in one piece, Bennett could wind up being a nice little sleeper in fantasy drafts.

Packers: Flanagan healthy
The News
Mike Flanagan is back to full strength. The Packers' center and cog of their offensive line missed most of last season with a badly frayed patellar tendon, but made it through the team's recent minicamp without any problems. Flanagan told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he expects the coaching staff to take it easy on him during training camp. "I don't know in what capacity, but I think it would be somewhat similar to what Marco (Rivera) did last year where maybe only one-a-days, or maybe take every third practice off," Flanagan told the paper.
Our View
Whatever it takes to keep him healthy is well worth it as far as we're concerned. The Packers absolutely need Flanagan to protect Brett Favre, open holes for Ahman Green, and lead this line more than ever after losing both starting guards to free agency this offseason.

Buccaneers: Clayton to miss minicamp
The News
Buccaneers' wide receiver Michael Clayton will sit out of minicamp next week to rest his surgically repaired left knee. The second-year veteran underwent surgery back in February to repair torn knee cartilage under his left kneecap. Clayton told the St. Petersburg Times on Wednesday that he has started light running of routes and has been catching passes during individual drills this week. Clayton finished last season with 80 receptions for 1,193 yards.
Our View
Michael is expected to make a full recovery before training camp opens at the end of next month. As such, fantasy owners should not move him down in the rankings. Clayton is currently listed as No. 13 in our offseason wide receiver rankings.

Lions: Drummond remains unsigned
The News
Lions' Pro Bowl return man Eddie Drummond did not sign the $1.43 million tender before Wednesday's deadline for restricted free agents. However, rather than reducing their offer to $455,000 (as was their right) the Lions left the offer on the table. Despite being a Drew Rosenhaus client, Drummond is not expected to hold out of training camp. "We're confident that we're not going to get down that road," Rosenhaus told the Detroit News. "We certainly expect to have a signed contract before training camp rolls around."
Our View
That signed contract will likely be a long-term deal. Don't underestimate the impact Drummond can have for the Lions, setting them up in great field position series after series.

Panthers: Carter continues to impress
The News
Panthers' wide receiver Drew Carter has been impressing coaches and teammates throughout the team's offseason workouts. Among the players the second-year wideout impressed was quarterback Jake Delhomme. "I think he can be a wild card," Delhomme told the Charlotte Observer. "You look at his size (6-3, 200 pounds) and you look at his speed, he can really go and get it. He's making plays. He's making catches. He's doing some good things." Carter is currently listed as the No. 4 receiver on the depth chart.
Our View
Steve Smith and Keary Colbert have the starting wideout spots locked down, so Carter is competing with Ricky Proehl for the No. 3 job. There have also been rumors that the Panthers are interested in Redskins' receiver Rod Gardner, who could be released before training camp opens. Carter doesn't have much fantasy value at this point, but that could change if he has a strong training camp.

Cardinals: Green praises Arrington
The News
Cardinals' running back J.J. Arrington has been turning heads at the Cardinals' minicamp workouts. In fact, the team's second-round pick in April's draft even earned a few kind words from head coach Dennis Green. "J.J.'s very quick, explosive," Green told the Arizona Republic on Tuesday. "He has outstanding hands. I think he's everything we hoped he would be. I think it's going to work out real well. When you get on the field with him, he's just so quick and explosive. Very few guys coming out of college are like that."
Our View
Arrington is the favorite to win the starting running back duties in the desert. His only serious competition at this point is Marcel Shipp, who is returning from a serious knee and ankle injury he suffered last season. We initially believed that Arrington would lose goal line carries to veteran Troy Hambrick. However, Hambrick hasn't been attending the offseason workouts and might be released before training camp. Arrington is most valuable in yardage leagues, but his stock could balance out in all formats if he gets the goal line touches.

Seahawks: Pathon needs conditioning work
The News
Seahawks' wide receiver Jerome Pathon reported to minicamp overweight earlier this week. Hawks' head coach Mike Holmgren sent a message to Pathonthrough the media by saying the 29 year-old veteran needs to get in better shape if he hopes to run with his new teammates. "He is entitled to his own opinion, he is the head coach" Pathon responded to the Tacoma News Tribune on Wednesday. "At the same time, this is the offseason workouts and we still have to go out in the desert and run around for two or three weeks, right?" Pathon spent the three previous seasons with the Saints.
Our View
Jerome is a contender for the No. 2 receiver job that belonged to Koren Robinson before the team released him earlier this month. Bobby Engram is currently listed as the starter, but Pathon, Joe Jurevicius, and D.J. Hackett are among the receivers who will contend for the job during training camp. Pathon is merely an average receiver and it appears that he is already in the doghouse of his new head coach, so fantasy owners should keep their distance.

Jets: Tongue let go
The News
The Jets have released safety Reggie Tongue, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. Tongue started all 16 games for the Jets a year ago, recording 68 tackles and one interception. He also had an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Steelers in the playoffs.
Our View
The Jets weren't happy with Tongue's inconsistent play, and veteran Jon McGraw is expected to have the first shot at replacing him in the starting lineup.

Dolphins: Ricky reinstated into NFL drug program
The News
Ricky Williams has been granted reinstatement into the NFL's substance-abuse program, his agent Leigh Steinberg told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Williams has reportedly also been given a copy of the Dolphins' offseason workout program to help him gain weight and strength as he attempts to unretire. "He's confident that his weight and strength are steadily returning, that he'll be in good shape by training camp and that the process will continue through training camp," Steinberg told the Sun-Sentinel.
Our View
Williams will now be subject to up to 10 drug tests per month for the rest of his NFL career. He would be suspended for a year if he fails or misses any of those tests. As it stands, Ricky will have to serve a four-game suspension when he returns, and because of salary cap issues, the Dolphins will have to either renegotiate his and/or other players' contracts, or trade him before he'll ever step on an NFL field. Stay tuned.

Chiefs: Hakim reneges on his verbal agreement
The News
Free-agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim backed out of a contract agreement with the Chiefs on Friday afternoon, and it is believed that he will now sign with the Saints, ESPN's Len Pasquarelli is reporting. "Az and his agent got together and they really felt his best situation was not here for him," Chiefs' head coach Vermeil told ESPN following Friday's mini-camp session. "Then he and I discussed it. I told you all along that I wanted what was best for him, and I think he's going to end up in New Orleans." Hakim was cut by the Lions after three injury-plagued seasons.
Our View
Hakim never actually signed a contract, so there will be no salary cap implication from all this. The source of his sudden change of heart was reportedly that Vermeil wouldn't guarantee him a roster spot. He's really no lock to make the Saints if he can't stay healthy, but the deal with them was reportedly for more money. The Chiefs will now begin another search for a veteran wideout and are believed to be in contact with big-mouthed, low-producing receiver Freddie Mitchell.

Packers: Rodgers' struggles continue
The News
Packers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers was known for pinpoint accuracy throughout his college career at the University of California. However, the No. 24 overall pick in April's draft has struggled with his accuracy in the team's minicamp workouts. "Something is causing him to have his ball sail," Packers' offensive coordinator Tom Rossley told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He's high on all of his throws. He's not really cutting loose, and he's not following through and finishing on the ball." Rodgers is attributing his on-field struggles to being mentally overloaded with new information.
Our View
Aaron scored 1,310 on his SAT's and a 35 on the Wonderlic test, so it shouldn't be too long before he absorbs the new information he's being asked to learn. In the meantime, he'll be stuck behind No. 2 signal caller Craig Nall on the depth chart. Fortunately for Rodgers, he has plenty of time to work the kinks out, as starter Brett Favre has already stated that he is open to the idea of returning for future seasons.

Cardinals: Mitchell signs
The News
The Cardinals signed rookie linebacker Lance Mitchell to a three-year contract on Thursday, according to the Arizona Republic. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The former Sooner was selected in the fifth-round of April's draft.
Our View
Mitchell will find it difficult to earn playing time behind starters James Darling, Ronald McKinnon, and Karlos Dansby. In fact, he is listed on the depth chart below several backup players such as Darryl Blackstock, Gerald Hayes, and Orlando Huff.

Falcons: Jenkins pushing Price
The News
Second-year wide receiver Michael Jenkins is making a bid to earn a spot in the starting lineup. Although Jenkins was expected to push No. 2 wideout Dez White for playing time, he is instead challenging Peerless Price for the No. 1 role, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jenkins finished last season with just seven receptions for 119 yards.
Our View
We still expect Price and Jenkins to be in the starting lineup when the regular season begins. The coaches are doing everything in their power to motivate Price. As if making it known that they were toying with the idea of releasing Peerless wasn't enough, now they are threatening to give his starting job to a second-year player. Price has his issues and has a big contract, but he's certainly better than White.

Cardinals: McCoy signs three-year deal
The News
The Cardinals signed rookie wide receiver LeRon McCoy to a three-year contract on Thursday, according to the Arizona Republic. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. McCoy was picked in the seventh round by the Cardinals.
Our View
Fantasy owners won't be seeing much of McCoy this year, as the team is loaded with wide receiver talent. In addition to starters Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, the team also has former first-round pick Bryant Johnson and former Buccaneers' wideout Charles Lee.

Jaguars: Kight signed
The News
The Jaguars claimed wide receiver Kelvin Kight off waivers from the Packers Thursday. Kight spent four games on the active roster in Green Bay but did not record a catch.
Our View
Kight played his college ball at the University of Florida, so he's familiar to the area. It's unlikely he'll make much of a fantasy splash given the Jags have Jimmy Smith and their last two first-round draft picks sitting atop their wide receiver depth chart.

Redskins: Gardner to skip minicamp
The News
Redskins' wide receiver Rod Gardner is still seeking a trade or his release. As such, he will not attend the team's minicamp workout this weekend, according to the Washington Post. The Redskins are expected to grant Gardner's wish by releasing him in the near future if they can't find a team that's willing to trade for the four-year veteran.
Our View
Gardner is making this difficult by refusing to sign a contract extension with any team that acquires his services via trade. The Redskins want to get something in return for the former No. 15 overall pick in the 2001 draft, but teams won't give up much for a player who only has one season left on his deal. The Panthers are among the teams that are believed to be interested in signing Gardner if the Skins elect to release him.

Chiefs: Mitchell signs one-year deal
The News
The Chiefs signed free agent wide receiver Freddie Mitchell to a one-year contract on Saturday. The deal is worth $540,000, according to the ESPN website. "We're very happy to have him here and I think he's happy to be here," Chiefs' head coach Dick Vermeil said Saturday. "He's in a good frame of mind and his attitude is very good." Mitchell logged 22 receptions for 377 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles last season.
Our View
Dick is clearly on the rebound after being spurned by Az-Zahir Hakim, who backed out of a verbal agreement to join the team on Friday. Rebound relationships don't work out, so don't be surprised if Vermeil regrets signing the mouthy Mitchell, who talked his way out of a job in Philadelphia. Freddie was held to just two touchdowns last season and the Chiefs are hardly known for high-scoring wide receivers, so fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited about this deal.

Saints: Hakim back on radar
The News
After Az-Zahir Hakim changed his mind about signing with the Chiefs, the Saints believe they can land the free agent wideout. The Saints had made an offer to Hakim prior to him reaching a verbal agreement with Kansas City, but after the Chiefs were unable to guarantee Az the playing time he was looking for, he could be heading to New Orleans. "I told you all along I wanted what was best for him," Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil told the Times-Picayune. "I think he's going to end up in New Orleans."
Our View
The Saints sent Hakim a contract offer Friday night, and though nothing is confirmed it appears Vermeil was right and Az will be in New Orleans this year.

Chiefs: Battle out for season
The News
The Chiefs lost cornerback Julian Battle for the 2005 season after he tore his left Achilles' tendon during a minicamp workout on Saturday. "He's going to be operated on," Chiefs' head coach Dick Vermeil told the Associated Press. "He popped his Achilles' tendon, and he's lost for the year." Battle logged 10 tackles for the Chiefs last season.
Our View
This is a tough blow to the Chiefs, as Battle had been listed as a starter on the depth chart. 2004 starter Eric Warfield is battling legal problems and is expected to be suspended by the league for four games due to violating the substance abuse policy. The new plan is for Dexter McCleon to assume the starting role opposite newcomer Patrick Surtain, who was acquired from the Dolphins earlier in the offseason.

Saints: Hakim agrees to one-year deal
The News
The Saints and free agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim came to terms on a one-year deal on Sunday. The ESPN website reports that the deal is worth roughly $665,000. Hakim previously reached a verbal agreement with the Chiefs but changed his mind on Friday. He finished last season with 31 receptions for 533 yards and three touchdowns for the Lions.
Our View
Barring another last second change of heart by Hakim, this deal should be finalized on Monday. Chiefs' officials are probably even more upset with Hakim today, as they were under the impression that the reason he snubbed them was because the Saints were offering a multi-year contract. Az will likely compete with second-year wideout Devery Henderson for the No. 3 wide receiver role behind starters Joe Horn and Donte' Stallworth.

Redskins: Dixon signing provides insurance
The News
The Redskins signed free agent safety Tony Dixon to a one-year contract on Saturday. The ESPN website reports that the deal is worth $540,000. The four-year veteran auditioned for coaches and team officials on Saturday afternoon and was offered a contract a short time later. Dixon, a former second-round pick of the Cowboys, logged 30 tackles and three sacks for Dallas last season.
Our View
Dixon provides the Redskins with insurance for troubled safety Sean Taylor, who was arrested on two felony counts of aggravated assault with a weapon earlier this month. If Taylor joins the team for training camp next month, Dixon would be a role player at best. As such, Tony does not have value in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Dolphins: Williams to file for reinstatement
The News
Retired running back Ricky Williams is on the verge of taking the next step towards his expected comeback. Williams' agent Leigh Steinberg said Friday that Williams would file the necessary paperwork on July 23, one year after he retired last year, or shortly thereafter. "As far as we're concerned, that's the date he sent the letter," Steinberg told the Associated Press. "The league or the Dolphins may have a date a day or two later, but that's our date." Williams is still subject to a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Our View
As if Ricky didn't create enough headaches for fantasy owners last season by retiring just before training camp, his return to action will make things difficult for owners who were targeting rookie rusher Ronnie Brown. Given Ricky's unpredictable nature, we still consider Brown the better (and safer) fantasy option of the two backs.

Jets: Pennington on the mend
The News
Jets' quarterback Chad Pennington has taken a big step in his recovery from torn rotator cuff surgery by throwing for the first time in four months. "I'm right where I need to be," Pennington told ESPN Radio on Saturday. "Our medical staff has done an awesome job to make sure I haven't done too much and haven't done too little. Live I've said all along, the goal was to be ready by September 11, not by June or July, but by September 11." The Jets will face the Chiefs in week one on September 11.
Our View
Doctors predict that Pennington will be cleared to return to full practice when training camp opens next month, so we should get a chance to see him in action during the preseason. Chad was a major disappointment to fantasy owners last year, although he did play through the rotator cuff injury during the final seven games of the season. He is currently ranked No. 13 in our offseason quarterback rankings.

Bills: Parrish impressive in workouts
The News
Rookie Roscoe Parrish continues to impress Bills coaches and players as the Bills wound down their spring workouts last weekend. The diminutive wide receiver displayed the speed and elusiveness that made him a star at the University of Miami and impressed with a few circus catches during workouts. "He made some big plays in third down work," coach Mike Mularkey told the Bills official website. "He did some of the things we're looking for from him. The more comfortable he gets with his job, I think the more production you're going to see from him."
Our View
Parrish is slated to push Josh Reed for the starting position in the slot for the Bills in training camp. Parrish has looked good in shorts, but it remains to be seen if his size will adversely affect him once the pads come out. The knock on him in college was that he has trouble getting off the line against physical bump-and-run coverage. If he can overcome that, he has the speed and athleticism to make some big plays this season.

Browns: Dawson gets camp competition
The News
The Browns signed kicker Nick Setta to provide training camp competition for incumbent Phil Dawson. Setta kicked for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe but was cut by the Bears when he returned from Europe.
Our View
Setta was a combination punter-kicker at Notre Dame, which may help him find a niche in the pros, but he's still a long shot to beat out Dawson.

Bengals: Perry two-thirds healed
The News
Bengals running back Chris Perry, who was limited to just two carries his rookie season by a sports hernia that required two operations, told the Cincinnati Enquirer he's about 60-65 percent healed. "It's something I don't have control over," Perry said. "I'm hoping on July 29 I can be out there. I'm just trying to get my shoulders in shape for the pounding football puts on your body."
Our View
The Bengals have Rudi Johnson ahead of Perry, and seeing as Johnson is the club record holder in single-season rushing attempts and yardage and just signed a fat new contract, it's unlikely Perry will absorb much if any pounding this season.

Panthers: Cramer signs
The News
The Panthers signed exclusive rights free agent Casey Cramer to a one-year contract over the weekend. The Rock Hill Herald reports that the deal is worth $305,000. Cramer appeared in six games last season as a backup fullback for starter Brad Hoover.
Our View
Cramer was the last of the Panthers' unsigned free agents, but team officials aren't done talking contracts. They are currently in negotiations with linebacker Dan Morgan, who is set to enter the final year of his contract. Cramer did not take a carry last season, so he does not have any fantasy value.

Eagles: McNabb and Owens bury the hatchet
The News
Donovan McNabb and teammate Terrell Owens are no longer butting heads, at least according to the Eagles' quarterback. "I talked to him after the first minicamp (early May)," McNabb told Sunday's Philadelphia Inquirer. "We communicated and put everything in the air. I'm fine. We dealt with things, and I'm looking forward to getting out there with him." McNabb added that Owens apologized for claiming that the signal caller was tired during the final minutes of the Super Bowl back in February.
Our View
McNabb and Owens might be on good terms, but the real issue is whether the Eagles' front office can make peace with the veteran wide receiver before training camp opens next month. Owens has boycotted the team's offseason workouts in protest of the seven-year contract he signed prior to last season. Although he has not directly vowed to extend his holdout into training camp, he has not ruled out that possibility either.

49ers: Morton heading west
The News
The 49ers signed veteran wideout Johnnie Morton to a two-year contract on Tuesday, reports the team's website. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Johnnie is our kind of guy." head coach Mike Nolan told the site. "He is a hard-working professional who will be a great example to our young receivers." Morton caught 55 balls for 795 yards and three touchdowns as a Chief last season.
Our View
Morton should beat out Arnaz Battle for a starting spot during training camp. However, since Johnnie couldn't find consistent fantasy success in the Chiefs' high-scoring offense, we have a hard time believing he'll do a whole lot with Tim Rattay or rookie Alex Smith under center. Considering that Brandon Llyod and Battle were the top two receivers on their depth chart before this transaction, adding a veteran wideout was a smart move for the 49ers.

Redskins: Barrow bounces back
The News
Despite speculation that his days with the Redskins were coming to an end, linebacker Mike Barrow impressed the coaching staff with his individual workouts at the team's recent minicamp. "If they wanted me to practice I think I could have practiced," Barrow told the Washington Post. "I did everything that I couldn't do last year." Barrow missed the entire 2004 season due to acute tendonitis in his left knee.
Our View
Safety Sean Taylor is in serious legal trouble, and linebacker LaVar Arrington is still recovering from a pair of knee surgeries, so it's good to hear something positive about the Redskins defense for a change. Barrow is the only experienced middle linebacker on the Skins' roster, so team officials are hoping he can bounce back and reclaim his starting role this season.

Packers: Second rookie lineman agrees to terms
The News
The Packers signed another rookie offensive lineman Monday, agreeing to terms with seventh-round pick William Whitticker, a guard from Michigan State.

Browns: Johnson signed to back up Dilfer
The News
The Browns signed quarterback Doug Johnson to provide veteran backup for Trent Dilfer. "That's what they expect me to be, that's what they told me I'll be and that's what my expectations are," Johnson told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I was brought in to be Trent's backup, and I'll be one play away from playing."
Our View
Johnson, originally drafted by the Falcons and the backup in Tennessee last year, will move ahead of Josh Harris and rookie Charlie Frye on the depth chart. His presence gives the Browns a backup with NFL experience, something neither Harris nor Frye possess.

Bengals: Krenzel added to depth chart
The News
The Bengals acquired quarterback Craig Krenzel off waivers Monday. Krenzel started five games for the Bears last season, throwing for 718 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions.
Our View
Krenzel will compete with Casey Bramlet and rookie free agent Josh Haldi for the No. 3 spot behind starter Carson Palmer and backup Jon Kitna.

Panthers: No progress in Morgan contract talks
The News
The agent for Panthers' linebacker Dan Morgan said Monday that while contract negotiations are still taking place, no significant progress has been made. "Obviously, we've talked several times and exchanged some proposals, but we're not close to getting a deal done at this point," agent Drew Rosenhaus told the Charlotte Observer. Morgan is entering the final year of his contract.
Our View
We can't help but to question whether Rosenhaus spends more time negotiating contracts or talking with the media. Morgan has yet to threaten a holdout, but Panthers' general manager Marty Hurney would prefer to re-sign the talented linebacker to a long-term deal before the season opens. Morgan is a top-40 linebacker in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Redskins: Arrington questionable for training camp
The News
Redskins' linebacker LaVar Arrington is still recuperating from two knee surgeries. He's now taking part in a running program, but his availability for training camp is still a question mark. "He's got a lot of work to do in the next 41 days," Redskins trainer Bubba Tyer told Monday's Washington Post. Arrington missed 12 games last season due to knee injuries.
Our View
When healthy, LaVar is one of the premier linebackers in the game. He is currently ranked No. 18 in our offseason linebacker rankings, but Arrington's stock would slide in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive play if he misses substantial training camp time.

Redskins: Taylor to claim innocence
The News
The attorney of Redskins' safety Sean Taylor said Monday that his client will file a not-guilty plea at an arraignment scheduled for Friday. "I sincerely believe that Taylor is innocent of the charges," attorney Edward Carhart told the Washington Post. The second-year pro is facing two felony charges of assault with a firearm and a misdemeanor count of simple battery for an incident that took place in Florida earlier this month.
Our View
Well, you didn't really think Taylor's attorney would tell the media that he thinks his client is guilty, did you? The Skins are taking precautions just in case Taylor misses playing time this season. In addition to signing free agent safety Tony Dixon over the weekend, team officials have also expressed interest in safety Lance Schulters, who was released by the Titans last week.

Eagles: Rosenhaus talks with Reid
The News
The agent of holdout wide receiver Terrell Owens said Monday that he recently contacted Eagles' head coach Andy Reid. "I called Andy and talked to him," Rosenhaus told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I mention this because I think people have the sense that I don't have a professional dialogue with him. It's not like he and I don't have a dialogue. Rosenhaus did not say whether speaking with Reid was beneficial in Owens' demand for a new contract.
Our View
Does Rosenhaus know how to keep his name in the news, or what? It's something new almost every day with this guy and Owens. They don't even have to say anything consequential and the media still jumps all over it. In essence, there is nothing new to report on Owens' holdout, but Rosenhaus wants to keep the media and the fans talking about him and his client.

Jaguars: Taylor's rehab to be stepped up
The News
Jaguars running back Fred Taylor has been limited to individual drills, straight-line running, and other basic rehab as he works his way back from offseason knee surgery. But over the next two to four weeks, Taylor's regimin will pick up as the Jags try to find out just how much they can count on their star back. The Florida Times-Union reports that the team will have Taylor do extensive cutting and sprinting as well as other tests to the strength and endurance of his knee. "Now," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told the Times-Union, "we will see what Fred's status truly is."
Our View
Del Rio still believes Taylor will be ready for the start of training camp, and the team has held off on alternatives like a trade for Travis Henry until they're fully able to test the status of Taylor's knee. An answer regarding Fred's health prior to training camp will go a long way towards answering questions about his fantasy value for the upcoming season.

Buccaneers: Barber won't hold out
The News
Buccaneers' cornerback Ronde Barber isn't happy about being the 27th highest paid player at his position, but he doesn't plan on boycotting training camp in protest of the situation. "Other people have different agendas, have different ideas," Barber told the St. Petersburg Times on Tuesday. "I love Tampa Bay. I love what this defense has allowed me to become as a player. Having to reestablish that would probably be a little difficuolt. It's not something I'm willing to do unless I have to." Barber has two years remaining on a six-year contract that pays him roughly $3 million per season.
Our View
It's refreshing to see a player honor his contract. Ronde might change his tune next year at this time as he will be entering the final season left on his deal, but until then fantasy owners can expect to see him on the field. Barber is a top 20 defensive back in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Eagles: Rosenhaus ruffles feathers
The News
Eagles officials said Tuesday that head coach Andy Reid has not had open dialogue with agent Drew Rosenhaus regarding the Terrell Owens holdout, despite the agent's claims to the contrary. Team officials did concede to the Philadelphia Inquirer that Reid recently accepted a phone call from Rosenhaus. However, they also note that Reid answered the phone because he didn't recognize the number, and added the conversation lasted only a matter of seconds.
Our View
Does this guy know how to tick off the Eagles or what? Now he has team officials disputing stories about the duration of a phone conversation between the agent and Reid. Does anyone really care if Rosenhaus and Reid are on speaking terms? We really don't, but we vowed to update with the latest on the Owens' holdout throughout the summer, and we're doing our best to keep our word.

Chiefs: Colquitt adds weapon to special teams
The News
There may have been snickers when the Chiefs drafted punter Dusty Colquitt in the third round, but the rookie's nearly uncatchable punts will provide yet another weapon to the formidable Kansas City offense. "When saw it when we watching him in college, a lot of returners were mishandling his punts," special teams coach Frank Gansz Jr. told the Kansas City Star. "I've seen a lot of punts, but this guy's punts move around." Further evidence is provided by veterans Dante Hall and Eddie Kennison, both of whom have struggled to field Colquitt's kicks in practice. "Dante dropped one every day, and Dante never drops one," Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil told the Star.
Our View
Envision Priest Holmes and Trent Green playing with a short field set up by turnovers in the kicking game, and you can see what the Chiefs had in mind using that third-round pick on Colquitt.

Saints: Gandy passes on pay cut request
The News
Saints' offensive lineman Wayne Gandy claims that team officials asked him to accept a pay cut during the team's minicamp workout last month. Although Saints' general manager Mickey Loomis denied making such a request, Gandy's agent Neil Schwartz said Tuesday that the team cited non-productivity as the reason the team cited for making the alleged demand. "You tell me where the guy lacked productivity," Schwartz told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "This non-productivity claim is fiction. I think it's from the Wizard of Oz." Gandy has started 32 consecutive games for the Saints."
Our View
So one side claims the request is fictional, while the other pronounced the reason behind the request as fictional. If Gandy is cut before the regular season opens, it's probably safe to assume that the team did ask him to take a salary cut. The 11-year veteran is currently slated to start at left tackle.

Titans: Bironas to compete with Kimrin
The News
The Titans signed kicker Rob Bironas to compete with Ola Kimrin for the team's open kicking position. Bironas, who kicked for the New York Dragons of the Arena League, debuted by converting four of seven field goal attempts in his first practice; Kimrin went 3-for-6. "This is going to be an ongoing process," Titans coach Jeff Fisher told The Tennessean. "We're very pleased with what we have now, but I can't say that we're not going to have anybody else in. This job is open and we're going to find the best person available for it."
Our View
The winner of the Titans' kicking job isn't likely to provide big fantasy production, but both current candidates possess big legs and could be considered in leagues where longer kicks are rewarded.

Bears: Bradley signs five-year deal
The News
The Bears signed wide receiver Mark Bradley, their second-round draft pick, to a five-year contract on Tuesday. The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports the total value of the deal to be $4.25 million. Bradley is the first player selected on the first day of this year's draft to sign.
Our View
The plan calls for Bradley to be limited to mainly special teams in his rookie season. However, given the dearth of receiver talent on the Bears roster once you get past Muhsin Muhammad, he may be asked to fill a role in the offense right away.

Buccaneers: Bryant healthy
The News
Buccaneers' kicker Matt Bryant is hopeful that injuries won't prevent him from competing for the placekicking duties during training camp. The veteran kicker was on pace to win the kicking job in Dallas last year, but suffered a back injury late in training camp. "The health is good," Bryant told the Tampa Tribune on Tuesday. "I've been hitting kickoffs into the back of the end zone, I've been 50-plus (yards) on some of the field goals, and I'm really feeling pretty good." Bryant is currently battling Todd France for the Bucs' kicking job.
Our View
The competition between Bryant and France might last throughout training camp. Bryant was the favorite, but France delivered a great performance in NFL Europe this spring. We're still leaning toward Bryant emerging victorious, but we'll keep a close eye on this battle throughout the summer

Bears: Muhammad and Grossman getting timing down
The News
Rex Grossman's ability to participate in offseason workouts the past couple weeks enabled him to start brewing some chemistry with the Bears' new top target, Muhsin Muhammad. "This is a brand new offense and I think the timing is coming sooner rather than later with Rex and I," Muhammad told the Daily Southtown. "You can see that every day has been better than the last. He's getting better and better."
Our View
If Grossman stays healthy and the Bears figure out the optimum way to utilize both Cedric Benson and Thomas Jones, this offense could mildly surprise some people. They were abysmal last year, but that was without Grossman for the most part and Muhammad represents a dramatic upgrade at wideout.

Vikings: Birk eyeing preseason opener
The News
Vikings Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, who is recovering from May hip surgery, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he won't be able to run for three weeks, but he feels better than he has for a year. "I'll have to take it easy for the first couple weeks of training camp, but I'm confident I will be ready for the opening exhibition game," Birk told the paper.
Our View
Birk's timetable sounds a tad fast for someone who has had one hip and three hernia surgeries in less than a year. The Vikings want him ready for the opening of the regular season, not the preseason so it wouldn't be surprising to see him held out of more than one exhibition game. The important thing is that he is ready to go by September, as he is the leader of the Vikings' strong offensive line.

Bears: Grossman's knee looking good
The News
Rex Grossman appears to be recovered from the torn ACL he suffered last September. The Bears quarterback took part in the offseason workouts that ended on Wednesday without problem, according to the Daily Southtown. The paper also reports he did well in the drills designed for new coordinator Ron Turner's offense.
Our View
The health of Grossman's knee and his ability to catch on to the new offense are the most salient issues for fantasy owners to be watching in Bears camp this summer, so this is promising news.

Lions: McQuarters signs one year deal
The News
The Lions announced the signing of free agent defensive back R.W. McQuarters to a one year contract on Wednesday. The Detroit Free Press reports the deal to be worth $1.6 million. McQuarters was released by the Bears earlier this offseason, in part, for salary cap reasons.
Our View
McQuarters is reunited with head coach Steve Mariucci—the Niners made him their first round pick in 1998 when Mooch was their head coach. He adds some depth and versatility to the Lions' secondary, in that he can play the nickel and time spots as well as safety.

Bears: Ogunleye ready to go
The News
Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, who underwent ankle surgery earlier this offseason, was able to participate in workouts the past one and a half weeks. "If we played in a couple of weeks we feel like he would be ready to play," head coach Lovie Smith told the Daily Southtown.
Our View
Look for Wally to be ready to roll at full speed in time for training camp next month. His value is way down after a disappointing first season in the Windy City, but he'll be a draft day steal if he performs the way he did in Miami a couple years ago.

Saints: Hakim explains Chiefs snub
The News
The newest member of the Saints explained on Wednesday why he decided to sign with the team despite making a verbal agreement to join the Chiefs. "I just had a gut feeling that I wanted to be in New Orleans, so I pretty much re-chose," Az-Zahir Hakim told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "(Chiefs' head coach) Dick Vermeil understood what the deal was, and he let me go. It was a decision I had to make." Hakim caught 117 passes for 1,523 yards and 10 touchdowns during his three-year run with the Lions.
Our View
Hakim will compete for the No. 3 spot on the Saints depth chart during training camp. Given that his strongest competition is expected to be second-year player Devery Henderson, who didn't catch a pass last season, we expect Hakim to win the job.

Buccaneers: Brackins sidelined
The News
Buccaneers' rookie wide receiver Larry Brackins has been sidelined by a hamstring injury throughout the team's minicamp this week. Bucs' head coach Jon Gruden said Thursday that the missed practice time is hurting the fifth-round pick's chances of making the team. "Yes, it hurts him," Gruden told the Tampa Tribune. "You've got to practice. They might tell you different, but Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, they're always hitting balls. And this kid, he's raw. He needs the work."
Our View
Brackins didn't start his college football career until the 2003 season, so he probably needs the practice time more than most fifth-round picks. The good news for Larry is that the Bucs don't have much depth behind starting wide receivers Michael Clayton and Joey Galloway, so we expect him to make the team.

Jaguars: Law to visit
The News
Free agent cornerback Ty Law will visit Jacksonville Thursday to work out for the Jaguars. "If he's healthy, we're interested," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told the Florida Times-Union. "We're going to give him a physical and see where he is."
Our View
Law suffered a Lisfranc fracture and missed the last two months of the 2004 season. He had offseason surgery but was released by the Patriots because of his $12.5 million cap hit. The Jags could use some veteran help at corner; currently, second-year player David Richardson and third-round pick Scott Starks are manning the corner opposite Rashean Mathis.

Cardinals: Carothers signs one-year deal
The News
The Cardinals signed NFL Europe star Greg Carothers to a one-year contract on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Carothers logged 58 tackles for Amsterdam, the World Bowl champions.
Our View
Carothers was cut by the 49ers during training camp last year, so he is hardly a lock to make the Cards' regular season roster.

Colts: Harper waives right to initial hearing
The News
Colts cornerback Nick Harper, arrested earlier this month on domestic battery charges, waived his right to an initial hearing, scheduled for Wednesday. Harper was arrested June 4 after a disturbance at his home which authorities say resulted in Harper hitting his wife and causing an abrasion near her eye.
Our View
The court will set a date for Harper's next appearance, though if he enters a guilty plea he won't have to appear in court until sentencing. The current charges Harper faces are a Class A misdemeanor and could result in as much as one year in jail.

Patriots: Morton signed
The News
The Patriots have agreed to a one-year deal with Chad Morton. The Boston Globe reports the deal is worth $600,000 for one year, with a possible $600,000 more in incentives.
Our View
Morton was brought in exclusively to compete for the Patriots' kick return job. He'll battle it out with the newly-acquired Tim Dwight and holdover Bethel Johnson in training camp. Morton is coming off a knee injury that caused him to miss all but six games last season, so he'll have to prove he's healthy before the Pats hand him the job.

Dolphins: Schulters to visit
The News
Safety Lance Schulters is scheduled to visit the Dolphins on Friday. The free agent was released by the Titans last week in a cost-cutting move after the two sides couldn't agree on a restructuring of Schulters' $2.75 million contract for 2005.
Our View
Schulters missed 13 games last year after injuring his left foot, but he's a solid, seven-year veteran who would compete with Travares Tillman for the starting safety position in Miami. Tillman recently underwent surgery to repair torn knee cartilage suffered at Dolphins mini-camp, but he is expected to be back in action by the time training camp starts on July 24.

49ers: Hunter added to wideout mix
The News
The 49ers signed free agent wide receiver Javin Hunter to a two-year contract on Friday. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but ESPN reports that the deal probably includes minimum base salaries. Hunter has not played in a regular season game since 2002 when he was drafted in the seventh round by the Ravens.
Our View
Hunter will have a hard time getting playing time, as he will be listed below Arnaz Battle, Brandon Lloyd, Johnnie Morton, P.J. Fleck, Rashaun Woods, and others on the depth chart.

Jaguars: Taylor reveals extent of knee injury
The News
To the surprise of almost no one, Jaguars running back Fred Taylor indicated that the knee injury he suffered last season was more serious than the team had let on. Taylor appeared on a Jacksonville radio show and said he suffered tears to both his MCL and PCL and underwent "a full cut" instead of arthroscopic surgery. "It was a lot worse than initially thought," Taylor said on WZNZ's The Frank Frangie Show. "They kept that under wraps."
Our View
Taylor added that his rehab from the knee injury is going well, and while he doesn't anticipate playing in any of the Jaguars' preseason games he expects to be ready for the season opener against Seattle. We're not exactly holding our breath.

Redskins: Taylor officially charged
The News
State prosecutors in Florida filed a single count of aggravated assault with a firearm on Redskins' safety Sean Taylor on Friday morning. His trial date has been set for September 12, one day after the team is scheduled to open its season. Taylor's attorney told the Associated Press on Thursday that his client hoped to avoid charges after meeting with prosecutors and turning in a polygraph test that allegedly clears him of wrongdoing. However, polygraph tests are rarely admissible in court, and prosecutors opted to follow through with their case.
Our View
There had been rumors around the league that the prosecution was planning to drop its case against Taylor, so this news might be a surprise for the Redskins. The timing of the trial couldn't be worse. No word yet as to whether Taylor will request a date change or if he will miss substantial playing time this season.

Redskins: Hawkins added for depth
The News
The Redskins signed free agent cornerback Artrell Hawkins, according to Friday's Washington Post. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Hawkins spent six years with the Bengals before joining the Panthers last season. He appeared in 14 games last year and accumulated 21 tackles and one interception.
Our View
The Skins need to add cornerback depth, as their top three players at the position are currently Shawn Springs, rookie Carlos Rogers, and Walt Harris. No word yet as to where Hawkins fits on the depth chart, but it's safe to assume that he wasn't signed to play a starting role.

Cowboys: Jones happy to have A-Train
The News
Cowboys' running back Julius Jones praised new teammate Anthony Thomas on Thursday. "He's been really helpful," Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Anthony is a good back, and he's got the most experience out of all of us back there. He can kind of tell us things we don't know. It's always good to have a guy back there who knows what to expect, because he's got a little more experience than you." Thomas is currently listed as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart behind Jones.
Our View
This isn't the first time that A-Train has backed up a member of the Jones family. Last year, Thomas served as the primary backup to Julius' older brother Thomas Jones in Chicago. Julius is firmly entrenched as the starter in Dallas, while Anthony will be pushed by rookie rusher Marion Barber for the No. 2 role during training camp.

Buccaneers: Allen mum on Steussie
The News
Buccaneers' general manager Bruce Allen declined to say on Thursday why veteran offensive lineman Todd Steussie was excused from the team's mandatory minicamp. Furthermore, Allen would not say whether the move should be taken as a sign that the team is releasing Steussie. "It's too early to say," Allen told the St. Petersburg Times. "I talked to him and I excused him from practice. He's been here for most of the program. In face, he made about 80 percent of the offseason workouts. We feel good about where he is and we're just going to have some discussions." The Bucs would save roughly $2 million in salary cap space by releasing Steussie.
Our View
There have been rumors that Steussie will be released ever since he was identified as one of three players who obtained illegal performance enhancing drugs from a South Carolina physician. The Bucs have let him take part in team activities thus far, so it doesn't appear that steroid allegations have scared the team away. If the 11-year veteran is released this summer, it would probably be attributable to his big contract and diminishing skills.

Falcons: Schulters targeted
The News
The Falcons are among the teams in the hunt to acquire free agent safety Lance Schulters, according to the Falcons Insider website. Schulters, who was released by the Titans last week, is also being pursued by the Dolphins, Lions, and 49ers. He made his first free agent stop in Miami on Thursday.
Our View
The Falcons have been semi-desperate for free agent help since losing former starter Cory Hall, who was cut, re-signed, and released again earlier this year. After adding veteran free agent linebacker Edgerton Hartwell, safety might be the team's lone weakness on defense. No word yet as to whether Schulters has set up a meeting with the Falcons yet.

Buccaneers: Cadillac earns high praise
The News
Buccaneers' running back coach Art Valero is raving about rookie rusher Carnell Williams. "When (Carnell) is in the open field or even in traffic, he can put his foot in the ground and change direction very, very quick," Valero told Sunday's Tampa Tribune. "Then, all of a sudden, he can go from zero to 60 in a heartbeat. That explosion he has, you just go 'Whoa.'" The Buccaneers selected Williams with the No. 5 overall pick in the draft.
Our View
The Bucs coaching staff has nothing but good things to say about Cadillac, who is even drawing some early comparisons to Falcons' running back Warrick Dunn. Meanwhile, we haven't heard much of anything about Michael Pittman, who started the majority of the games for Tampa last season. There were early rumblings that the two backs would fight for the starting job during training camp, but all signs point to Williams being the primary ball carrier for the Pewter Pirates. Cadillac is currently ranked No. 23 in our offseason rankings, while Pittman is No. 47.

Panthers: Rutherford facing uphill battle
The News
Panthers' quarterback Rod Rutherford will likely enter training camp as the No. 3 quarterback listed on the team depth chart. However, he'll likely lose his place on the roster to rookie Stefan LeFors, who was selected in fourth round of the draft back in April. However, the Rock Hill Herald reports that Rutherford still has practice squad eligibility, so he might remain with the team if even he doesn't make the active roster.
Our View
We know that Jake Delhomme has the starting job locked up, and it appears that Chris Weinke is firmly entrenched as the No. 2 quarterback in Carolina. That only leaves room for one more quarterback on the roster, and the Panthers aren't about to sever ties with a player they just selected in the fourth round. As such, it appears that Rutherford is the odd man out. Only time will tell whether Panthers' head coach John Fox deems Rod worthy of a spot on the practice squad.

Dolphins: Defensive back Williams released
The News
The Dolphins released safety Quintin Williams on Friday, just one day after he was arrested on DUI and drag racing charges in Miami. The Associated Press reports that Williams was clocked driving 111 miles per hour on a freeway. He then failed a DUI test and was taken to jail for the evening. Teammate Travares Tillman was in the car with Williams, but the veteran defensive back was not charged by police.
Our View
It's easy to send a message by releasing a fringe player who spent most of his time on the practice squad. Something tells us that Dolphins' head coach Nick Saban wouldn't have been so tough if team leader and defensive end Jason Taylor had been in the driver's seat.

Raiders: Curry running full speed
The News
Raiders wide receiver Ronald Curry, who tore his Achilles' tendon in week 13 of last season, is running full speed and may participate in limited fashion in training camp, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Curry recorded 50 receptions, 679 yards, and six touchdowns before sustaining the injury last season.
Our View
With Randy Moss and Jerry Porter occupying two receiver spots, is there enough to go around for Curry to be a fantasy factor? Well, it's worth noting that Curry did lead the Raiders in virtually all receiving categories at the time of his injury, while Porter did not emerge until Curry was on injured reserve. In any case, Curry's return to health would clearly be yet another boon for quarterback Kerry Collins' value and would provide yet another challenge for opposing defenses.

Bears: Grossman raves about Muhammad
The News
Bears quarterback Rex Grossman is thrilled with his new No. 1 receiver Muhsin Muhammad. "Moose is amazing," Grossman told the Bears web site. "I think any quarterback would be able to get a pretty good relationship with him going. He's such a smart player, he uses his body well, he has huge hands and he really runs good routes."
Our View
Muhammad must look like a Hall of Famer compared to some of the talent Grossman has had to throw to in Chicago. It's good to see that Rex and Moose clicked so well during organized team workouts; we'll see if it carries over into training camp and then into the regular season.

Broncos: Bell operating as if he's 'the man'
The News
Second-year running back Tatum Bell is operating under the impression that he's going to the Broncos feature back, even if the coaching staff has yet to determine that. "I feel like I'm the man," he told the team's official website. "It hasn't been said; I just feel that deep inside. I'm hitting the weight room hard, and I'm trying to be in the best shape so coach won't have to pull me out unless I'm tired. I feel like I've just got to keep proving myself to the coaches that it's mine and that I've got what it takes to last all 16 games. It will all hit the fan when training camp comes."
Our View
We'd love nothing more than for Bell to go out and grab the exclusive job in Denver, which offers up an awful lot of rushing yards. In their last minicamp, both Bell and veteran Mike Anderson were running with the first team, but Bell is exactly the type of runner that fits Mike Shanahan's schemes. As Bell suggested, training camp will be critical in this position battle.

Saints: Brooks steps up for lineman
The News
Saints' quarterback Aaron Brooks is not happy that team officials have asked offensive lineman Wayne Gandy to accept a pay cut. "I think the guy deserves every penny of the $5.25 million he's due this year," Brooks recently told the Associated Press. "Tapping on Wayne's shoulder for a pay cut is not the answer. That's kind of unfair, in my opinion. I respect him. I look up to him, as a player and as a person."
Our View
Saints' general manager Mickey Loomis continues to insist that he did not ask the 34 year-old offensive lineman to accept a cut in pay. If nothing else, it's good to see Brooks standing up for one of his teammates. Saints' officials would like Aaron to become a locker room leader and this might be his first step toward assuming that role.

Cardinals: Lewis released
The News
The Cardinals released quarterback Chris Lewis over the weekend, according to the Arizona Republic. Lewis, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford, spent last season on the practice squad. He also played in NFL Europe this spring with the Cologne Centurions.
Our View
Kurt Warner will be the starting quarterback as the team heads into training camp next month. Incumbent starter Josh McCown will be the primary backup, and John Navarre will be the No. 3 quarterback on the Cards' roster. In other words, the quarterback depth chart is set in Arizona, and there wasn't room for Lewis.

Chiefs: Wilson hands in strong minicamp
The News
For the second straight summer, tight end Kris Wilson is drawing rave reviews in Chiefs' minicamp. Wilson, a second-round draft pick in 2004, was the unquestioned star of last year's training camp, but broke his leg in the final preseason game and never fully recovered. Nearly a year removed from the injury, the Kansas City Star is reporting that Wilson was making a familiar impression with very good downfield speed, soft hands, and a full understanding of Kansas City's complex offense.
Our View
Prior to his injury, the Chiefs were talking about having to get Wilson on the field in two- and three-tight end sets, as well as using him at fullback, halfback, and receiver. The Chiefs don't exactly have the most compelling set of wide receivers, so if Wilson can find his way onto the field with Tony Gonzalez and Priest Holmes, he has the talent to make an impact in deeper leagues. We'll keep you posted on how involved the second-year tight end may be this season.

Titans: Odom to undergo sleep apnea surgery
The News
Titans defensive end Antwaan Odom will undergo surgery on Monday to correct his sleep apnea condition. "A lot of people don't know about (sleep apnea), but it is something I have had to deal with pretty much my whole life,' he told the Tennessean. "I didn't realize it until I was diagnosed, and the hope is that (surgery) will get it fixed, at the least there is a higher chance of solving it." Odom will also have his abnormal tonsils removed on Monday.
Our View
The report didn't say how long Odom would need to recover from the surgery, but we assume he'll be ready well in advance of training camp.

Texans: Wells works out at fullback
The News
Texans running back Jonathan Wells will take on some fullback duties in the upcoming season. "They came to me in the off-season and said they felt we could add some versatility to the offense if Domanick [Davis] and I were in the backfield at the same time," he explained to the team's official web site. Quarterback David Carr added, "I think he can play either position, tailback or fullback. So getting him involved in the offense either way, where he can catch the ball out of the backfield or play in different spots or even split him out at wide receiver in some sets, I think it will be a big help for us."
Our View
Davis is still the main man in this backfield but coupling him with Wells will allow Dom Capers to become a little more creative with his offense. The hope for fantasy owners is that Capers doesn't decide to get too cute near the goal line, but there's nothing in the report that suggests Wells will steal carries at the stripe.

Titans: Payton ready to go after break
The News
Titans running back Jarrett Payton did not participate in minicamp practices over the past couple weeks because the coaches gave him the time off to rest. Payton recently returned from playing in NFL Europe. He finished second in the league in touchdowns (seven) and fourth in rushing yards (578). "The body is good, I am not worn down. I am happy that coaches gave me chance to rest a bit and I feel like when camp rolls around I will be ready to go," he told the Tennessean. "Playing there, it gave me a real confidence and it helped me and showed me I could do it in a game atmosphere. Playing well boosted my confidence, too."
Our View
Payton is one of several running backs competing for Chris Brown's primary backup spot, and he'll have a chance to seize that job come training camp. Until Payton or someone else is named the primary backup, though, only Brown has fantasy value in the Titans' backfield.

The News
The Raiders signed free agent defensive tackle Ed Jasper on Tuesday to help bolster a unit that ranked 31st in the league in points allowed (27.6 points per game). Jasper started 12 regular season games and two playoff games for the Falcons last season.
Our View
Most of the moves Oakland made this offseason were on the offensive side of the ball, but their defense was also wretched a year ago. Jasper provides depth on a defensive line that also features Warren Sapp and Ted Washington.

Chiefs: Ambrose, Law on radar screen
The News
The Chiefs remain in the market for a cornerback, and veteran free agents Ashley Ambrose and Ty Law remain possibilities, the Kansas City Star reports. Kansas City lost Julian Battle to a torn Achilles' in minicamps last week, and Battle was filling in for starter Eric Warfield, who is likely to miss a portion of the season due to an NFL suspension.
Our View
Ambrose is more likely because he's recently worked out for the Chiefs, while Law continues to be a mystery with his foot injury and unrealistic contract expectations. The Chiefs have already reinvented themselves on defense, and adding another experienced defensive back can't hurt.

Jets: Lewis, Jones to retire in green
The News
The Jets re-signed linebackers Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones on Monday to allow two of their franchise cornerstones to retire as members of the New York Jets, according to the New York Post. Both are expected to announce their retirement on Tuesday.
Our View
Rumors of a Gang Green group hug could not be confirmed.

Dolphins: Law unlikely to sign on
The News
Former Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law's free agency tour continues, but the Miami Herald is reporting that a deal with the Dolphins is unlikely. "Now Miami wants me to come back and visit," he told Sports Illustrated's Peter King. "But if you can't afford Patrick Surtain, how can you afford me?" Law is visiting several teams and working out to prove that he is recovered from a Lisfranc fracture that cost him two months last season.
Our View
The Dolphins had hoped Law would take a short-term, relatively inexpensive contract near his home in Plantation, Florida, but Ty hasn't exactly looked at his skills and/or health objectively in recent seasons. Case in point: he's two years older than Surtain, who appeared in 15 games last season. Law is scheduled to work out in Jacksonville on Thursday.

Rams: Curtis earns odd distinction
The News
Rams' wide receiver Kevin Curtis earned unique praise from Falcons' defensive back DeAngelo Hall. "I don't mean to be (politically) incorrect or anything, but (Curtis) has to be the fastest white guy in the league," Hall told the ESPN website. "That cat can really run. You put him in an offense like St. Louis has, along with (Torry) Holt and (Isaac) Bruce, and it's like, 'Okay, pick your poison.'" Curtis finished last season 32 receptions for 421 yards and two touchdowns.
Our View
Curtis is coming off his best season as a pro. Although 10 touchdowns and 1,077 yards is probably a stretch, he could turn out to be the Lite version of Colts' No. 3 receiver Brandon Stokley, who produced those big numbers last season. Holt and Bruce will get most of the looks from quarterback Marc Bulger, so Curtis is a deep sleeper at best.

Titans: Thompson, Hartwig working on long-term deals
The News
Titans general manager Floyd Reese told the Tennessean that he is working on long-term deals with safety Lamont Thompson and center Justin Hartwig. Reese received a proposal from Thompson's agent on Monday, and Hartwig's agent sent in proposal "recently." Both players are under contract for just one more year.
Our View
We've grown used to seeing the cash-strapped Titans kicking people out the door, and it's nice to see them actually working to retain a couple players. We'll let you know if and when Thompson and Hartwig agree to terms.

News: Gramatica has surgery
The News
Free agent kicker Martin Gramatica underwent surgery last week to repair tears in his lower adductor. "It's been a problem for him for about two-and-a-half years," Gramatica's brother Bill told the Tampa Tribune on Tuesday. "But you've never heard Martin complain, and he never used it as an excuse. People knew he was hurt, though." Martin was cut by the Buccaneers last year and later caught on with the Colts.
Our View
We can't help but wonder whether Martin suffered this injury while dancing after a successful field goal conversion. Come to think of it, it's probably been about two-and-a-half years since he made a field goal. Okay, that might be pushing it, but Gramatica has been struggling for the better part of two seasons, which makes us wonder why he waited so long to have surgery.

Panthers: Fields wins Halas Award
The News
Panthers' running back Mark Fields has been named the winner of the Halas Award, which is presented annually to the player or coach who performs with abandon despite injury or personal problems off the field, according to Tuesday's Rock Hill Herald. Fields returned last season after sitting out the 2003 campaign while battling Hodgkin's disease.
Our View
Fields will be sidelined again in 2005 while he receives chemotherapy treatments. He has already established the 2006 season as his target return date. Given the tenacity he showed while working toward making a return last season, no one should rule out another successful comeback for Fields.

Bengals: Takavitz signs two-year deal
The News
The Bengals signed free agent rookie offensive lineman Kyle Takavitz to a two-year deal on Monday. Terms were not disclosed. Takavitz, a two-time captain at the University of Cincinnati and two-time first-team All-Conference USA players, started 38 games over the past three seasons, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Takavitz ranged from left tackle to right guard to left guard over his college career, the team's official web site reported.
Our View
The Bengals lost backup Alex Sulfsted to retirement last month, and the team hopes Takavitz can replace that depth. Plus, it's always a good PR move to hire the local kids.

Lions: Garcia ready to battle for job
The News
Jeff Garcia spoke to reporters at his annual charity golf tournament over the weekend about the Lions' quarterback situation. "It's Joey Harrington's job to lose," Garcia told the Gilroy Dispatch. "But I'm going to be right there nipping on his heels." When asked what would happen if he got the chance to start, Garcia replied: "I don't plan on giving it back."
Our View
Garcia is expected to push Harrington for the job in training camp and during the preseason, and given his relationship with head coach Steve Mariucci, it will be interesting to see how much leeway Harrington will be afforded as the incumbent. The safe guess is that Harrington will retain the gig, but it's worth keeping an eye on during the summer.

Chargers: Rookie linemen sign on
The News
The Chargers signed rookie offensive linemen, tackle Wesley Britt and guard Wes Sims, to three-year contracts, according to the team's official website. Britt was a fifth-round pick out of Alabama and Sims was a sixth-round selection from Oklahoma.
Our View
Last year, San Diego got away with very little depth on the offensive line, so it's nice to see that they addressed that weakness in the draft, especially since we've got LaDainian Tomlinson topping virtually every cheat sheet. The Chargers selected three linemen in the draft, and all three have already signed.

Falcons: Vick has MRI on shoulder
The News
Michael Vick underwent an MRI on his left shoulder on Wednesday. The Falcons' new medical staff ordered the test so that they could get an update on Vick's recovery from an injury suffered last season against the Panthers, head coach Jim Mora told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The MRI did not reveal any damage and Vick was given a clean bill of health.
Our View
This news refutes a report in this week's Sports Illustrated that Vick had the test because of soreness in his shoulder. It's something to keep an eye on during training camp, but it appears Vick is fine.

Bengals: Haldi released
The News
The Bengals released rookie free agent quarterback Josh Haldi on Tuesday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
Our View
The Bengals claimed Craig Krenzel off of waivers on June 20, and that acquisition made Haldi expendable.

Eagles: Owens joining Moss in Oakland?
The News
The Raiders' busy offseason may not be over yet. Philadelphia television station WPVI is reporting that there is a trade in the works that would send disgruntled wideout Terrell Owens, who had 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Eagles last season, to Oakland in exchange for receiver Jerry Porter. Porter caught 64 balls for 998 yards and nine touchdowns in 2004.
Our View
While this deal may look lopsided at first glance, it is important to remember that Porter is five years younger than Owens and hasn't been a major pain in butt this entire offseason. The Eagles are not an organization that tolerates a lot of insubordination from its players, so the prospect of getting a young, talented receiver and a high draft pick might be enough to convince them to ship Owens to California. This trade is nothing more than a rumor right now, but we'll keep you updated of any developments and provide in-depth fantasy analysis if the deal actually goes through.

Vikings: Tice fined $100,000 for ticket scalping
The News
The NFL has fined Vikings head coach Mike Tice $100,000 for scalping his Super Bowl tickets. Running backs coach Dean Dalton and special teams coach Rusty Tillman also received $10,000 fines for the same infractions. "It will not happen again," Tice explained in a statement to the Associated Press. "I apologize to my family, Commissioner Tagliabue, the NFL, the entire Vikings organization and the fans. I consider this matter closed and remain focused on the upcoming 2005 season, which should be an exciting year for Vikings fans everywhere."
Our View
This news has no fantasy football ramifications, and we're not sure why it took the league so long to dole out this punishment.

Jaguars: Team still mum on Taylor's condition
The News
Jaguars spokesman Dan Edwards spoke to the Florida Times-Union on Wednesday and told the paper that the team would have no comment on the condition of Fred Taylor's left knee. Edwards did say that they expected Taylor to be ready for the start of the regular season. Head coach Jack Del Rio was unavailable for comment. Taylor recently revealed that he underwent reconstructive surgery in January to repair his torn MCL and PCL.
Our View
The Jaguars have a strong history of being secretive and downright lying about Taylor's injuries, and we're guessing the club will nix any of Fred's future radio appearances. We'll be keeping a close eye on Taylor come training camp, but nobody should be surprised if Jaguars' officials dodge any questions about the running back's condition.

Lions: Kircus charged with drunken driving
The News
Lions' wide receiver David Kircus is expected to be arraigned in Hudsonville District Court next Wednesday on drunken driving charges. He was arrested Saturday in Ottawa County near Grand Rapids, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Our View
Kircus probably won't stick with the team through training camp. He would be their fifth receiver at best.

Buccaneers: Contract offered to Law
The News
The Buccaneers are interested in signing free agent cornerback Ty Law. The St. Petersburg Times reports the team recently faxed a contract offer to him. "He's one of several free agents we're looking at," general manager Bruce Allen told the Times Wednesday night. Law is also receiving interest from the Colts, Jaguars, Jets, Dolphins, Lions, and Chiefs.
Our View
The Bucs don't look like a good fit for Law. They already appear set at corner with Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly, and Law is probably looking to get paid more than both of them. Moreover, as the Times reported, the Bucs are currently trying to clear $6 million in payroll so that they can sign their rookie draft picks.

Jets: Third-round defensive tackle signs
The News
Defensive tackle Sione Pouha, a third-round draft pick out of Utah, signed a rookie contract with the Jets on Thursday, according to the team's official website. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Our View
Interior defensive linemen do not often make an immediate fantasy impact, and we don't expect much from Pouha.

Redskins: Starting receiver jobs still open
The News
The Redskins overhauled their receiving corps this offseason, and head coach Joe Gibbs hasn't necessarily named his starters heading into training camp, although there are a couple front-runners. "I'd say David [Patten] and Santana [Moss] have been lining up with the first group, but we haven't designated a starter," he told the team's official web site. "We're letting [wide receivers coach] Stan Hixon work with the guys and rotate them around a little bit." Kevin Dyson, Taylor Jacobs, Darnerian McCants, and James Thrash are also competing for spots, and Jacobs has been turning some heads this summer. "He has all the tools," Patten said of his teammate. "I was talking to him [during mini-camp] and I asked him, 'Why are you not a starter?' I really think the best is yet to come for him."
Our View
Yes, Rod Gardner is still with the Redskins, but the site didn't even bother to mention him. We can say with certainty that Moss will be a starter, and it's a safe bet that Patten will be no worse than the third option. Jacobs has been creating occasional whispers with play since late last year, and the third-year receiver has worked more with quarterback Patrick Ramsey than either Moss or Patten. It's a stretch to think Taylor might be a notable fantasy factor, but he could emerge as a key player in this offense.

Ravens: Suggs' brothers acquitted
The News
Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was acquitted of assault charges on Wednesday. Suggs, his brother Donald, accuser Jeryme Cook, Casey Cothern, and Anthony Henrie were involved in a playground altercation at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on March 29, 2003. The Maricopa County Superior Court jury acquitted Suggs of one count of aggravated assault. The judge dismissed a felony assault charge last week. "I wasn't shocked when I heard the verdict," Suggs told the Associated Press. "You all have watched me grow up here. I've never once been in trouble." Donald Suggs was also acquitted on two counts of aggravated assault.
Our View
Suggs and his brother are undoubtedly happy to have this case behind them. Terrell can now return to concentrating on preparing for training camp and lining up for another 10-plus-sack season.

Redskins: Rogers has stress fracture in foot
The News
Redskins rookie cornerback Carlos Rogers has a stress fracture in his right foot and might not be ready for the start of training camp on July 31. Rogers did not participate in the team's past two minicamps due to what was believed to be a mild ankle sprain, but the team's top pick has been wearing a walking boot for the past two weeks. The NFL Network revealed on Wednesday that team doctors found the stress fracture when recently examining Rogers' foot. He will be re-examined later this week, the Washington Post reported.
Our View
Rogers was projected to open training camp behind Shawn Springs and Walt Harris on the depth chart, but the team was certainly hoping he would be out Harris for a starting job. With all the missed time so far and the possibility of Carlos being limited for part of training camp, we'd expect Harris to hold his role heading into the regular season. We'll update Rogers' status when more is known, and the team will likely issue a timetable once he is re-examined.

Redskins: Team worried about Rogers' ankle, not foot
The News
The Redskins confirmed on Thursday that rookie cornerback Carlos Rogers has a pre-existing stress fracture in his right foot, but they are more concerned about the bone bruise in his right ankle. They are worried that the bone bruise could turn into a non-displaced fracture. Rogers will wear a walking boot and use crutches for two weeks and then use in a hard-bottom shoe for an additional two weeks, the Washington Post reported. He is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp on August 1.
Our View
These injuries are going to make it difficult for Rogers to beat out Walt Harris for a starting job in training camp, and we expect the Redskins to open the season with Harris and Shawn Springs as their starters. However, fans might recall that stud safety Sean Taylor didn't enter the 2004 season as a starter but still emerged and made a major impact.

Eagles: Official shoots down Owens-to-Oakland rumor
The News
A high-ranking Eagles official reportedly "laughed off" the recent rumors about a trade with the Raiders involving Terrell Owens and Jerry Porter. "It won't happen," the official told Phillyburbs.com.
Our View
An ABC affiliate in Philadelphia picked up on this rumor Thursday, and word has been spreading around internet messageboards. This is the only substantial comment we've seen from either the Eagles or Raiders, and we'll continue to be on the lookout for more. For now, we're treating this as nothing more than a loose, unsubstantiated rumor.

Patriots: Branch addresses role
The News
Deion Branch is equal parts Super Bowl MVP and model Patriots' teammate, and thus his personal goals as an emerging wide receiver are sometimes at odds with his selfless role on the Patriots championship machine. "I want my numbers to be better," he told the team's official website. "But at the same time if we are winning and my numbers are low I am happy."
Our View
Branch recorded 454 receiving yards and four touchdowns in nine regular season games last year, and would have likely set career highs in every receiving category had he not sustained a serious leg injury. However, he perfectly articulates why in fantasy play, it's difficult to rely on any one Patriots receiver. The offense spreads the ball around and does exactly what it takes to win, and usually nothing more. Still, his stellar play in the last two postseasons has many calling him the primary receiver in Tom Brady's arsenal.

Lions: Edwards gets one year probation
The News
Lions' defensive end Kalimba Edwards pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges of disorderly conduct and failing to produce a driver's license during a traffic stop. He was sentenced to one year of probation. The charges stemmed from an incident in May in which he was pulled over by Michigan State police and after refusing to hand over his license, he resisted arrest by not allowing the trooper to handcuff him.
Our View
There are no fantasy ramifications of this incident. We just know how everyone likes keeping abreast of the latest on the NFL police blotter. Was it really worth it, Kalimba?

Giants: Sesay claimed off waivers
The News
The league awarded rookie free agent tight end Victor Sesay to the Giants on Thursday, the team's official web site reported. The undrafted Sesay signed with the Dolphins on April 29 and was released on June 24.
Our View
Sesay's tour of the United States continues. He grew up in D.C., started school at Ventura College in California, transferred to the University Missouri, spent those few weeks in Miami, and is now headed to New York. He'll compete with Chris Luzar and Darius Williams for the third tight end spot.

Cowboys: Stadium deal done
The News
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck signed on the dotted lines Thursday, held a press conference, and announced the successful completion of a deal to build a new $650 million stadium. "This is a very special day, to the City of Arlington and the Dallas Cowboys," Cluck told the team's official web site. "We've had many special days in this process. We've had the day in November when the voters resoundingly said, 'Yes.' And from that time, we had a deadline of July 1, in which we worked out the final details." The 75,000-seat stadium can be expanded to 90,000 and will include a retractable roof, unique open end zones for fans to hang out, state-of-the-art video boards, and a Cowboys Hall of Fame museum. The Cowboys plan to unveil their full design this fall and break ground sometime next year. The stadium is projected to open in 2009.
