Baseball-Bonds may chase Aaron's record into 2007

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) - San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds says he may play into the 2007 season if he is within striking distance of the all-time home run record.

Bonds, who turns 41 next month, is 55 home runs behind Hank Aaron's record of 755 and just 11 short of Babe Ruth's 714. The Giants outfielder is currently on the disabled list, recovering from knee surgery.

"I've played these scenarios over and over again in my head," Bonds told major league baseball's website. "I've always thought it would take the better part of two seasons before I passed Hank.

"If I'm within striking distance in 2007, I plan to play. Who knows how important Hank's record is? But as long as I'm healthy, I want to give it a try."

Bonds is under contract with the Giants next season with a base salary of $18 million. Though he could become a free agent in 2007, Bonds said he would like to remain in San Francisco.

"I might not be here (in 2007)," he said. "But I'd hope the Giants would still want me."
