Padres agree to terms with manager Bochy on two-year extension

SportsTicker

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Bruce Bochy can stop worrying about his immediate future.

The Padres on Wednesday night rewarded Bochy, the winningest manager in franchise history, with a two-year contract extension.

In his 11th season, Bochy has guided the Padres to a pair of National League West Division titles and a World Series appearance in 1998. He was named NL Manager of the Year in 1996.

Bochy, whose current contract was set to expire after this season, has posted an 821-852 record during his tenure. This season, the Padres are 40-31 and atop the NL West, 4 1/2 games in front of Arizona.

"Bruce Bochy has reached several milestones with the Padres within the past few years and those reflect as to what type of leader he is," general manager Kevin Towers said. "I have always felt that Bruce is one of the best minds in the baseball business and we're pleased to have him lead our club as least through 2007."

On May 11, the 50-year-old Bochy became the 65th manager in baseball history to reach 800 career wins. Only three active managers - Atlanta's Bobby Cox (1,584), the New York Yankees' Joe Torre (924) and St. Louis' Tony La Russa (839) - have won more games with their current clubs than Bochy.

"Bruce has earned the confidence and respect of his players, coaches, peers and front office, and extending his contract at this time adds to the continuity and stability that are important elements in a championship organization," Padres CEO Sandy Alderson said. "He has the winning combination of baseball knowledge and people skills that has earned my full confidence in him."
