I had my 24 hour team mountain bike race this past weekend. Basically, it is a team realy race that last 24 hours. One rider per team goes out at a time. When he finishes, he checks in (very quickly!) with the official scorer and hands the baton to the next rider, and so on. Our team finished 7 out of 16 in our category. We were very pleased with that finish. I improved my average lap time by eight minutes over last year, which is HUGE. I am thrilled with that. Other than 97 degree heat and some SEVERE leg cramping, everything went great for me. My legs cramped so bad on one lap that I fell off my bike and could not stand. A fellow racer stopped, gave me some magic pills, and I was on my way (then I passed him :D ).

It's such a painful but rewarding experience. I am sad that it's over. I trained hard for this and it paid off.

7 minutes into my first lap, about to head into the woods for a KILLER 4.5 mile climb.

Finishing that first lap, 1:08 later. Notice how much dirtier my legs are. :D

Just into my final lap, 22 hours later. I used my "backup" bike because it is six pounds lighter, and you really notice six less pounds when you are tired as hell.

Heading towards the finish line on my final lap. Man was I beat.

What was the magic pills?????

Just electrolytes. I had the cramping near the end of the lap, right at the beginning of tough climb. I am sure the pills did not kick in until after the lap. I bummed more electrolyte pills as well as concentrated electrolyte liquids from another guy and I didn't cramp anymore the rest of the race.

HAHA! No, a STUD is my buddy who did this thing solo! I did 4 laps in 24 hours and was thoroughly exhausted. He did 14 laps, finished 5th in the solo category and was DISAPPOINTED.

Maybe, maybe an hour. I crashed in a reclining lawn chair between laps and I may have dosed off a bit between night laps. It's so hard to sleep when your central nervous system is pumping so hard. By the time your body calms down, you have to start getting ready for your next lap. I had about 4 hours between laps to eat, nap, and prep my bike.

Oh yeah...about eating....you have NO energy to eat. You have to literally force feed yourself. While you are chewing, you're thinking "This sucks." :D We actually had a team cook who took real good care of us.

Yeah, my teammate took all these pics of me and he has a high end digital camera. I am really impressed with how well they turned out. :)

My "backup" bike (the white one) cost me about $1100 complete. I bought it several years ago. The silver bike (in the pic above) cost me about $3500. I bought the frame seperate then bought all the parts. You have to pay to get top quality, and that bike is light and virtually unbreakable (well, nothing I can do would break it), not to mention the technology that went into designing it.

One of my favorite bicycle quotes is, "Light, inexpensive, durable...you can only have two."
