Who the hell puts Mike Stanton in in extra innings in a tie game on the road when you have Mariano Rivera waiting in the pen?

What the...?

How the...?

That was disaster waiting to happen. Nice move Joe :hmm:

Well, not defending move since Stanton does suck, but if you're the road team, you wait until you have the lead in extra inning and let the closer come in at the bottom of that inning to get the save. The home team can use their closer in a tie game since he can't have save chance when the game goes into extra innings. That's why the O's brought Ryan in.

Exactly..you don't bring in your closer until you score so he can shut down the other team in extra innings..especially when your the road team...no reason for Joe to even THINK about bringing Mo in until the Yankees score.

Royce

I totally disagree, you bring in your closer when you need to stop the other team from scoring for any reason, whether it be keeping the game close, preserving a win, or keeping the score tied in extra innings, whether you're home or away. You can't just hold him out until you score runs, b/c who the hell knows you're going to score any runs in the first place. Rivera is good for 2 innings, but then he'd probably be unavailable today, but it's about winning THAT game. That is why Joe Torre is a sucky manager, why didn't he just say "Hey, Orioles, you win, no need to even play this half inning because I'm bringing in Mike Stanton." I'm sure Mo would have retired the side and gotten it into another inning, and it only takes one swing from our lineup to put us up.

Yankee 21

So, you bring Mo in and he goes say 2 maybe even 3 innings and nobody scores. You've now wasted Mo for the save and for the next game...now that Mo's out and there's still no score, who do you bring in??

Torre did the right thing, you don't bring your closer in until there's something to preserve or save especially in extra inning on the road!

I guess the tie was nothing to preserve...

Ok, let's pretend that we're in the ALCS. We're tied 3-3 in the series. Say Mussina has pitched like the beast he is lately and he is ready to go, but if you start him in game 7, then you can't start him in the first game of the world series. So instead, you pitch Sean Henn. You lose, Mussina never starts. Same thing as bringing in Stanton and not Rivera.

At least Stanton tried, the hitters ought to do better than what they are doing.
A Rod and Sheffield went 0 for 3 and 0 for 4. Matsui and Cano did pretty good but Sheffield and A Rod is big hitters and they didn't do much to help to produce some runs.

At least Stanton tried

He thew one pitch. And the one pitch was FAT. I could have hit that.

I agree with Royce and PP.

What Torre did was the exact same thing he did in Game 4 of the 2003 WS. That was one of the reasons we lost that WS.

If you're gonna stretch Gordon for 2 innings, that means you're going for the kill. And you don't go for the kill by putting in Stanton over Rivera. When the game is on the line, you put in your best pitcher, and that's Rivera.

And I'm not advocating sticking with Rivera for 2-3 innings; if he had an easy first inning then I might consider stretching him for 2 innings, but definitely not 3 innings. And if we still don't score then you go to Sturtze for 1 inning (or you could flip-flop Sturtze w/ Rivera if you really want to try and save Mo for a save) and if we still don't score, THEN you go to Stanton.

I don't believe you can let your team lose in an extra innings game when your best reliever sits in the bullpen. And with Brian Roberts, a switch hitter and one of the best hitters in baseball coming up to bat....I know Roberts bats worse right handed, but Stanton pitches batting practice to righties...this had disaster written all over it.

Lol, and Kiwi, you're right. What really killed us yesterday were all those goddamn double plays we kept hitting into :ugh:. And the defense, again.

I agree with that logic to the extent of letting Sturtze--or any other reliable relief pitcher (i.e. Gordon, if he hadn't pitched)--pitch the 10th.

If this was the Mariners or the Devil Rays we were facing then I wouldn't mind the Stanton-decision too much, but Baltimore? :ugh:
