JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ William Ortega hit a run-scoring single off Kris Foster in the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Baltimore 2-1 Saturday and stopped the Orioles' eight-game winning streak.
Ortega is batting .417 with two doubles this spring.
"He has been most impressive," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "He gets a good jump on the ball, which is what you look for in an outfielder. He hasn't done anything to prove he shouldn't be here."
Ortega has played the corner outfield spots this spring, and La Russa may use him in center.
"I think I've had a good spring but I still have a lot of work to do," Ortega said through teammate Eli Marrero, who translated. "I feel like I'm on top of my game now and I'm happy to be here. The big thing is to stay here."
Jay Gibbons homered in the fourth off Cardinals starter Matt Morris, and Albert Pujols homered in the sixth off Buddy Groom.
Morris, the Cardinals' opening-day starter, allowed three hits and struck out five in five innings.
Steve Kline, Dave Veres and Jason Isringhausen combined to hold the Orioles hitless with three strikeouts and a walk over the last four innings.
Baltimore starter Calvin Maduro gave up four hits and two walks in five shutout innings.
