DETROIT -- The Yankees' starting rotation took another hit on Saturday, when Joe Torre announced that Carl Pavano will miss his start on Sunday due to shoulder soreness.

Pavano could make his next scheduled start right before the All-Star break, but that remains up in the air. As of Saturday, the Yankees weren't considering placing the right-hander on the disabled list.

"It's a major concern because you don't know what the extent of it is," Torre said. "Let's see how serious it is before we start thinking about two weeks."

Pavano, who threw a bullpen session on Wednesday (he normally doesn't throw bullpens between starts), didn't seem overly concerned about the injury, saying he thought he would make a start next weekend.

"I think we're just going to take it day by day," Pavano said. "I threw a [bullpen session] the other day and it didn't respond the way I'd have liked. I think skipping a start is the best way to go right now."

After allowing four runs in six innings against Baltimore on Monday, Pavano asked to throw a bullpen on Wednesday. He felt some soreness in his arm following the session, then informed the team on Friday of the injury.

"He felt good enough to want to have a bullpen the other day, which was a good sign," Torre said. "But it's a concern. Any time somebody gets hurt -- especially in the starting rotation -- it's a concern. We just hope it's nothing serious."

Taking Pavano's place on Sunday will be Chien-Ming Wang, who was scheduled to go on Monday with an extra day of rest. Tanyon Sturtze will take the mound on Monday at home against the Orioles, and the Yanks will bring Randy Johnson back on short rest for Tuesday's game.

"We have the break coming up, so we have to get our thoughts in order," Torre said. "[We have to] get the rotation in order and hope they can all answer the bell."

Torre said that neither Tim Redding nor Darrell May, both acquired in a trade with San Diego on Saturday, were considered to take Pavano's start. Aaron Small, a right-hander with Triple-A Columbus, was a possibility, but Torre preferred Sturtze.

"He's an animal," Torre said. "He's going to give you everything he has."

"I'm going to come in and pitch. I'll go as hard as I can for as long as I can," said Sturtze, who has excelled in a short-relief role this season. "I'm going to keep the same philosophy, go after them."

Pavano's hiccup is the latest in a long line of injuries to the rotation this season. Jaret Wright made just four starts before going down with a shoulder injury, and Kevin Brown has had two stints on the DL, where he currently resides.

"It's been progressive. After my last start, the soreness was a little different," Pavano said. "I'm not too concerned about it. I think it's more day to day. It's better to miss time now than have something cost me more than one start."

Pavano has been an enigma this season, going 4-6 with a 4.77 ERA in 17 starts. He has allowed 17 home runs in 100 innings, one more than he gave up in 222 1/3 innings last season.

He insisted on Saturday that his shoulder problem has had nothing to do with his performances to this point in the season.

"I don't think it's affected me," the pitcher said. "It's something that's new to me, so it has to be addressed."
