Moonlight Gets His At-Bat

June 29, 2005 - After 100 years, Moonlight Graham finally got his elusive at-bat on Wednesday, thanks to the magic of KeySpan Park.

On the anniversary of Archibald "Moonlight" Graham's only major league game, the Cyclones arranged a reenactment in which Moonlight's career could finally come full circle.

Like Casey at the Bat, Moonlight's appearance did not end with the hero reaching base, but there was joy in Brooklyn, as the fans celebrated the legacy of a man who has become a legend.

Here are a few highlights of an "interview" with Moonlight Graham:

Q: After 100 years, how did you finally get the at-bat you’ve been waiting so long for?
A: That game has become pretty famous over the years…books, movies, newspaper articles. It seems like every baseball fan knows my name. The Cyclones contacted me about the upcoming anniversary, and it just seemed like the time was finally right. Brooklyn is where it all started, and it seems appropriate that it’s the place where we come full circle.

Q: After 100 years, do you think you’ll still be able to hit the ol’ fastball?
A: Ha! I doubt it, to tell you the truth. It’s not about the outcome of the at-bat for me, though. It’s all about finally getting the opportunity I always dreamed of, and ending an extraordinary chapter of my life.

Q: What message do you hope this brings to the fans at KeySpan Park tonight?
A: I hope it shows them that the dreams of our youth never die, no matter how much time or space passes. Dreams are ageless, and sometimes – especially in the wonderful game of baseball – even the most fantastic of them do come true.
