View Full Version : Guardado or Villone?

The closer's inconsistency has the Red Sox' front office attempting to find bullpen help elsewhere, knowing that the asking price may well be prohibitive. The Seattle Mariners, last in the American League West, have yet to make closer Eddie Guardado available, though several major-league executives believe that will happen after the All-Star break. However, Guardado, like Red Sox starter Wade Miller, is pitching despite a frayed labrum and is seen as a risk. Seattle left-hander Ron Villone can be had and the Sox have some interest in him, though he's not seen as the solution for the closer's spot.

I suffered way to many games watching Ron Villone try to throw the ball. He would MELT in Boston.
As for everyday Eddie I dont know how well he could do in Boston also. But even though it looks like he wont get the job done somehow he gets it done. But over the two I would take Everyday any day over Villone.

I think we should trade Bellhorn for a reliever, quickly.
If it were Bellhorn for Villone, would you accept?

Sign Craig Hansen to a major league contract. Forget giving up a top prospect for a has been and a never was.

Yes, but he wants a lot. Boras is his agent :(

They didn't draft him NOT to sign him. Besides, "Every Day Eddie" has a list of 10 teams that he doesn't want to be traded to and Boston is on that list.

OK, so who are you going to put at 2nd base if we trade Bellhorn?

A fire hydrant?
Actually, there's been talk of bringing up Dustin Pedroia in September; why wait, bring him up now. Could he be any worse than Bellhorn?

Guys, Bellhorn is your #9 hitter. He is NOT the problem on this team.

AGREED. Bellhorn is having a bad year at the plate, but he doing just fine defensively. JHFC, the bullpen is a much bigger problem than how well the 9 hitter is doing. Trading Bellhorn just creates another problem.

I think Guardado would be great for the Sox. I also don't see that trade happening. Right now the Mariners are demanding Hanley Ramirez. I just don't see that happening.

Bellhorn is just playing terrible, especially at Fenway. I was thinking that maybe they should trade him for a reliever and bring Pedroia (spelling?) Or play Youkillis at 2B or they also spoke about moving Mueller to 2B and playing Youkillis at 3B.

And just to add in: Boston has also looked at Atlanta's Danny Kolb (1-5, 5.63 ERA)

Also, Guardado has Boston on his no trade list. I don't think this has anything to do with the city. It more likely has something to do with the fact that his contract is heavily laden with bonus clauses giving incentive for being a closer. My guess is he wants to avoid any situation where he might end up in a set up role.
As for Villone, he is OK. It is useful to have a pitcher who works OK in the pen and can fill in as a starter in a pinch. Overall though, he certainly is nothing special.

You don't want Kolb. Earlier in the year, Kolb was quoted as saying that the intrusive Atlanta media (no, I am NOT making this up) is too tough on him.
Atlanta is a place where playoff games don't sell out, and he can't handle the pressure.
He'd fall to pieces in Boston.

Kolb is having an awful year!! I don't want him to pitch for Boston, he's not the answer.
