SEATTLE (AP) -- Darryl Hamilton's unhappy stay with the New York Mets ended Monday when the seldom-used outfielder was put on waivers for the purpose of his unconditional release.
Hamilton, designated for assignment on June 30, would clear waivers Wednesday if he's not claimed and become a free agent.
The 36-year-old batted .214 in 52 games with one homer and five RBIs in 126 at-bats. Hamilton got into an argument on June 29 with manager Bobby Valentine about his role.
New York acquired Hamilton from Colorado during the 1999 season. He missed much of last year because of an injured foot, hitting .276 in 105 at-bats.
