Around here, we've heard tons of hype about Dmitri Young. How he loves playing for Detroit, what a "team guy" he is, how much he wants to win, how infectious his attitude is, etc... During tonight's game against Tampa Bay, Young was interviewed by the TV guys and I have to admit, I'm impressed.

Young appears to be everything he was advertised to be. One thing is certain: he is definitely enthusiastic. I know about the things he said about Junior and Larkin, but the guy was cheering, hoping and begging out loud for double plays and hits by the second and third stringers in a ST game. That's a positive guy.

In many ways, Young appears to be a throwback to the players of decades ago. One who cares about his work, his teammates and his city. One who enjoys what he does and shares his love of the game with others. We don't get to see too much of that anymore.

In the end, his ability will speak more than his attitude or words. Hitting .275 with 10 homers, while playing for a team far out of contention and the that positive attitude won't amount to much. However, Young should be fun to watch and he has given this old cynical fan a little more optimism about the Tigers' 2002 campaign.
