I'm glad you started this thread, because I'm watching the White Sox/Red Sox game, and I have a question. This is my first season with MLBEI, and I am getting a chance to listen to announcers from all around the country. I have to ask what White Sox fans think of their announcers.
The reason I ask is because, during this game, it seems to me that the announcers are making no effort to be impartial or fair and just tell people what's happening on the field. The Mets announcers NEVER use the word "we" in reference to the team or come right out and tell people how disappointed they might be if the other team hits a homer or whatever. I've been listening to Mets games for close to 40 years, and they have never, EVER actively rooted for the home team.
I know the White Sox announcers are not the only ones who display homer-ish tendencies (Ron Santo might as well be waving actual pom-poms, and the YES Network is often referred to as Al-Yankzeera), but the White Sox announcers are, so far, the most vocal homers I've heard. Even Michael Kay of YES never refers to the Yankees as "we."
This really surprises me. I honestly don't mean to insult anyone -- I'm just making a comment based on my observations over the first half of the season.

When I hear the Hawk do the White Sox games, I just laugh at him.
As a Twins fan, I hate the Hawk mainly because of his hatred towards the Twins. Hawk has incidents with the Twins players and coaches over the years. With that said, I respect Hawk's baseball knowledge, his enthauism for the game and the White Sox, and his loyalty to the team. He is like a fan.
BTW, the "He Gone" thing is funny. I know some people hate it, but I have grown to love it for some reason.
Oh and welcome to Addicts.

TW, it's me, LeiterFan. I changed my name because, even though I will always love Al, I cannot be named after someone who plays for the Yankees. Seeing him in that uniform makes me positively sick. :barf:

i like ron, so i live with homerism to some extent. difference between the two is that ron will rip to shreds his own guys (kinda like harry caray used to) when they go wrong.
the biggest thing that hawk does is give the 3 minute silent treatment when things go bad (as i expect will be happening very shortly). But i do know that ken uses We because he has given a lot of blood sweat and tears to the organization over the years and is very very close with reinsdorf.

Keith Hernandez is a beloved Met, and he NEVER refers to the team as "we." Nor does "The Franchise," Tom Seaver. Jerry Remy played for the Red Sox, and he doesn't use "we" either. Is it a Midwestern thing? I just don't get it.

i dont know, and i dont really have a problem with it, as he is paid by the cubs (granted, WGN, but the trib owns WGN). plus he has been in the organization since 1960 (except for his last year when he was traded to the south side). and is an honorary coach. so its perfectly acceptable.
if keith wanted to say "we" in terms of talking about the mets, it wouldnt be a problem.
i guess i dont get why not.

In general,I have no problem with Hawk. But sometimes, like Ray said,we get the silent treatment when things are going bad. Also,Hawk will go after media people who dare 2nd guess,or rip the team.
Like the Jeff Brantley incident on Memorial day when the Angels were in town for an ESPN game.Ozzie made what Jeff thought was a couple of "idiotic moves" that would doom the Sox.The Sox ended up winning the game.
A few days later,Hawk ripped Brantley for his comments, and pretty much discounted Brantley's entire baseball career, which I thought was petty.

There is a thread about Hawk, Cyber. Sounds like most Yankees fans hate the guy. BTW, I love your new username.
I don't think it's the Midwestern thing. It's just Ken being Ken.
I love the dead air telecast when the White Sox are behind.
You know? With the advent of DirectTV and MLB.TV, everyone has to watch Hawk when the White Sox are at home so you can understand why the other team's fans may feel offended. To be fair to Hawk, he is catering to the White Sox fans audience in Chicago and nationwide on WGN-TV.
BTW, Hawk ripped Brantley Wednesday as he said about how Dimitri Young was as good as making predictions as Jeff Brantley.

I stumbled across this forum and read this thread and had to sign up and throw in my two cents.
I am a giant White Sox fan, have been my 25 years of existence. Hawk and DJ are by far the worst announcers I have ever heard. I want to listen to announcers that talk about what is going on in the game, make some predictions on what pitch should be thrown in what situation, talk about current trends with the player, etc. Hawk and DJ rarely do this. All Hawk does is spit out lame sayings and go on and on about players from the 1940s thru the 1970s. He always talks about how he played the game and I say who cares? His stats aren't impressive at all and he doesn't predict pitches at all, probably because he has little clue. DJ spends his time talking about the Japanese league. Whoop de do. And some of the things that come out of his mouth don't make any sense. And while both of them talk up the Sox all the time, in between stories from the 40's or from Japan, they kiss the other teams butt too. The biggest move the White Sox could do before the trading deadline is to fire these two lamers and bring in Robin Ventura and Steve Stone.

Welcome aboard ChiSox22. :wave1:
Hope you enjoy your stay here.It seems to me here that people either have strong opinions on Hawk and DJ.Lot of times, you just have to laugh at them and shrug it off.
Anyway, hope you enjoy your stay here, and hope that the Sox can take the next 2 against the Red Sox.

It's still early, although we already had a couple of baserunning mistakes in the 1st inning.Hopefully it won't come back to haunt us.

I like the Chisox announcers. They should be homers. WTF is wrong with that?
And who the hell cares what a bunch of Choker, I mean Yankee fans think about them?

Welcome, Chisox22. If you really hate the Hawk like me, go to www.heavethehawk.com
PP: Sure White Sox announcers should be homers and that's fine, but if you ever watch them, they sound so silly. I just laugh at Hawk when he is talking. Twins announcers are homers, but they are not over the top. They bring a professional approach. Jerry Remy is a freaking homer, but he does not act like a child on the air. They are not going to say "we" or encourage their hitter to not overswing publically on the air. Hawk always says "we" when he talks about the White Sox. How is he part of we? He does not even play the game out there. He is an announcer not a player. My problem with Hawk is his personal attack with the Twins. He gets angry just talking about them. To make a long story short, what I am saying is that Hawk tends to act like he is bigger than the telecast of the game. Fans just want to hear about the game not about his blabbering.

I think announcers should be homers, I don't mind that they do that at all. I'm always bragging about the Sox in some way or another, they should do the same. And I don't mind Hawk saying "we" as well. They travel with the team for 162 games, they are a part of the team. I just wish Hawk and DJ weren't complete and utter morons. When Hawk brags about something from his playing days, I just laugh. Not only does he not understand that baseball is completely different now-a-days, his career stats are not impressive at all.
And thanks for the welcome Timberwolf. But I also don't mind his personal attacks on the Twins, cause for the past 5 years they have frustrated the hell out of me too :) He is just frustrated like the rest of the White Sox fans.

Jerry does a great job giving the other teams props and he does his HW on other teams, but he is also a homer and that's fine. At least, he is being a professional.
Chisox22: Well Hawk has had incidents with the Twins dating back to the 90s. I know he and Kent Hrbek actually got into it in which Kent wanted to kill him. Hawk constantly was mocking Kent's weight and Kent did not like it. Tom Kelly, the former Twins manager, and the Hawk had some incidents as well.

Although not classy, professional or using his head, I kind of get a kick out of that story, as I have heard it before. While I don't condone behavior like that, I think its kinda funny that Hawk would do that with our biggest rival. Sometimes I feel like in these politically correct times things like that never happen anymore, and then someone like Hawk does something stupid to stir up stuff. I am ultra competative, so I support any type of Twins-White Sox fighting, whether at the ballpark, in the announcers booth or on the streets
Oh, and the heavethehawk.com website is hilarious :lmao: Thanks for the laughs.

Hawk used to stir things up with the Brewers when the Brew Crew were in the AL. I recall Phil Garner, then Brewers manager, challenging Hawk and Wimpy to go fight him. Hawk respectually declined.
BTW, Rex Hudler is starting to grate me. Hudler does the Angels games. He is starting to act like Hawk all of a sudden.

Oh yeah,I remember that one now.Garner would have kicked his ass all the way dwon I-94.
As for the Twins,Friday night during the game,Hawk did give the Twins props on the way they won the division the last 3 seasons. The Twins have always stressed the meaning of teamwork and gave a ton of credit to Ron Gardenhire for molding that club.
So Hawk really does have some respect for Minnesota, except for the 18 games that we see them ;)

Remember Garner and Terry Bevington literally was fighting with each other. God that was funny as hell. Those were good times.
Since I am mentioning Rex Hudler, could you imagine Rex and the Hawk working together. Oh boy! Heaven help us if that ever happened.

I guess I'm just not used to homers.
I'm a Mets fan (NOT a Yankee fan, thankyewverymuch) and you will NEVER hear a Mets announcer do a game while referring to the teams as "us" and "them." Yankee announcers are definitely homers (but even guys like Phil Rizzuto didn't talk about "us" vs. "them"), but the Mets pride themselves on having announcers who are fair to both teams. Yes, it's understandable that our announcers want our team to win, but they would never say anything bad about the other team just for the hell of it.

I am all for them being biased to the team they represent. I would expect other team announcers to be the same way. The only ones who should not be biased are those from ESPN or some other nuetral network.
Silence is golden and the famous quips like "He Gone!" are priceless.
However, I do get tired of hearing about the "good ole days".

I am beginning to dislike the Sox announcers as well. I don't really mind the HR or K calls etc...but the dead silence or the nonstop talk about the 'good old days' and about how great Yastrzemski was.
When the Sox were playing the Royals this week, I turned on the game in like the 2nd, and me and my friend couldn't believe how long they were totally silent for. They didnt say 1 word throughout an entire AB, and then said 'Heres Paulie' and went silent again.
