Isn't Phil Nevin a 1st baseman? :notme:

Upon further investigation, I see that this is not a done deal. It hinges on Phil Nevins agreeing to this trade, and the Padres haven't even started discussions with him yet.
Nuts. Way to get me all excited, RAY. :banghead
So, here's the deal, according to Peter Gammons, as reported by the Baltimore Sun.
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-ostrade23,1,5499410.story?coll=bal-sports-baseball
"The Padres have not even asked our approval yet," agent Barry Axelrod told The Associated Press. "If they were to ask for our approval, for Phil to even consider it I'm sure there would have to be some discussion. He and or I would want to talk with the Orioles and find out what his role would be there."
Nevin started in the Padres' afternoon game at Philadelphia.
"Obviously it's not going to happen without our approval," Axelrod said. "So obviously, it's not close to being done."

sorry nan. :( but it SHOULD be a done deal. agents: the most useless human beings alive. :)
and nevin can play both positions. actually, i think he can play the outfield too. but yah i guess he could be considered a 1b.

No offense to you Baltimore fans, but Phil Nevin isn't anyone to brag about  The birds NEED Burnett if they are going to do anything this year. If they don't get that deal done, say good bye to any playoff chances they have.

Hmmmmm............
I don't really care if Phil Nevin "isn't anyone to brag about". All I care about is getting Ponson off this team. I don't care who they get, as long as he's gone.
As for the Orioles' playoff chances, there's still almost half the season left. That's alot of baseball. I hardly think it all hinges on whether or not they get Burnett. It'd be nice, but they were in first place for 62 days without him, thank you very much.

Why the O's held on to that sack of crap Ponson for so long I have no idea. About time they got rid of him.

I totally disagree!
A healthy Nevin is a very, very good player...
He was healthy last year and hit 26 hr's with 105 rbi's and batted .289.. In 2000 and 2001, the 2 years he played full seasons he averaged 36 hr's and 116 rbi's and was a .300 + hitter....
Put him in a pretty hitter friendly park and he should be able to put up 30 hr's and have over 100 rbi's if he stays healthy...

Ooh! Thanks for doing the work for me, Guru! I was going to check out his stats, because I don't really know anything about him.
He's right-handed, right?
O's could use a good right handed bat.
Hope he agrees.
Although Sid didn't look too good (so what's new...... :hmm: ) yesterday, so I'm hoping SD doesn't change their mind.
Don't let those numbers fool you. Even while injury, remember he's playing PETCO Park, so he's number wouldn't be eye popping. Yes, I remember when Nevin was healthy and playing in Padres old park. He was really good back then. Nevin is under some hard time lately, but trust me, anything is better than Ponson. Also, doesn't hurt to have Nevin.
Though, I doubt this deal will go down, because Nevin has veto two trades in the past. One for Burnitz and one for Griffey, so don't be surprised if this deal doesn't happen. Nevin might just end up staying in San Diego.

Ok, rip on me all you want.. but you do realize what division you guys are in right? Your lineup is not going to compare to the Red Sox or Yankees... EVER. Nevin isn't going to help. The point of my post if that Nevin is slightly above average, but Baltimore needs pitching. Burnett is the only way Baltimore will be competitive from this point foward. If I am wrong, than maybe Nevin would have helped against being swept by the (hahah) Devil Rays?

I dunno, even losing 5 in a row and not playoing well the O's are still only 3.5 games out as no one at this point is running away with the division....
I do agree that they do need pitching but I don't know if you can say that their lineup is much worse than the Yanks or Sox... They were missing their best pitcher for weeks in Beddard and now he is back...
Roberts, Tejada, Raffy, Mora, and Javy when he comes off the dl are just about as good as any 5 in baseball.. The addition of Nevin just makes them that much better.. Plus you have Sosa still in the lineup and while he may or may not go on one of hus tears, you still have him in there as a threat.. Are they as good as the Sox and Yanks, probably not, but they are no slouches and they continue to hang in there.. If they can pull off a trade for Burnett, this division will be a very interesting one come September....

Gee....... I was going to quote parts of this, James, but I agree with everything you said! :D
Javy's off the DL today, Sammy actually is heating up, which is nice. He had a solo homerun yesterday......... the problem being when he started heating up, everyone else went into this collective slump.
And, I've sort of avoided looking at the standings, but when I accidentally saw them on Baseball Tonight, I sort of felt better, because, yes indeed, 3.5 games back is not all that bad. These three teams, I think, will be competing closely for the rest of the season.

I dont know if this deal is worth it because of Nevin being hurt a ton the past few years.
But with that said if Nevin is ok and can play for you guys and dont get hurt then it would be a great deal I feel. Me having watched the NL west the most know what kind of a player Nevin can be and as some of you said he can get hot and look out he can carry a team. I do hope he takes it and dont get hurt. I dont know Nancy would Nevin play first? Raffy DH then mostly?
And as James said Nevin can play the outfield but he serves you better at the corners.

I don't understand this move by the O's. Is Ponson really that bad? It seems to me the O's need pitching help, now they go and trade away one of their starters. Help me out here...

Ponson has been bad. Think Alan Embree bad. I still like the guy though.

hahaha:laff:
Great comparison:D
I doubt Burnett trade is going down with the O's. Burnett is a pitcher for rent since he said he's going to test to free agent market during the off-season, so I'm not sure if you would want him. Depends on how you look at it. You want a player for rent or not? Not like he's a Roger Clemens. I won't mind renting he for a few months.
Plus, the team that gets Burnett will have Lowell's contract to deal with. No offense to Lowell, but he suck up a lot of money for being an extremely below average player this year.
Don't forget the main point of the deal is to move Ponson and get the best you can. O's got some minor league pitcher ready to the top in rotation. Minor League pitcher can't be that much worse than Ponson.
O's line-up doesn't suck. If we're comparing say the Red Sox and Yankee line-up to A's line-up, then that's a different story. XD

Well, it's not happening. I'm watching the O's/Rangers game on ESPN, and they just said that Nevins vetoed the trade.
Yeah, well f*ck 'im. :hmm:
And, yeah, Sid's bad! :banghead Good God!!! He totally sucks!!! If I had the stomach, I'd post his stats, but I don't, so I won't.
Nothing would make me happier than to see him leave. I'm so sick of him. You want him, PP? Take him, then we'll see some extra special venting in the Sox forum. :D Yikes. That might be scary.
If you wonder how much he sucks, scroll through here and find some of the "The Suckage of Sid" threads I've posted.
The guy drives me up a wall.
Maybe the Orioles will revisit the Burnett trade now. I know they really, really, really want to get rid of Sid, and I'm frankly surprised SD even wanted him. Not that I think Florida will take him. :hmm:
