Intent on holding onto the NL West lead, the Padres on Saturday acquired third baseman Joe Randa from the Cincinnati Reds for Double-A pitcher Justin Germano and another minor leaguer, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports.

It's unclear who will be the Padres' starting third baseman down the road. San Diego's deal for Randa came on the heels of the Padres sending third baseman Phil Nevin to the Orioles for starting pitcher Sidney Ponson. Nevin, however, must approve the trade; he has a limited no-trade clause, and can veto a trade to the Orioles, Olney reports.

If the Nevin trade goes through, the Padres plan to use Randa at third and Xavier Nady at first base.

The Twins also were interested in acquiring Randa before the July 31 trading deadline. Randa, an 11-year veteran who spent six seasons with the Royals before signing with the Reds as a free agent, batted .289 for the Reds with 13 home runs, 48 RBI and a .356 on-base percentage.

I like this trade, this one actually makes sense. Why does ESPN think Nevin is a third baseman anyways?

Appareantly,Randa will be the everyday 3B because to make room for him,Sean Burroghs was sent down to Triple-A Portland.

Sean, poor guy has really had it rough. He desperately needs a change of scenery. The local radio station is just brutal with him on "getting rid of him" and Bochy said the kid feels it. He's trying so hard everyday and it's just not turning around for him. He's only 24 yrs old and he was rushed up to the Big Leagues to play everyday. He hasn't learned how to work out certain situations that he would learn in the minors normally.

Unfortunately when a team is in first place, a player struggling and trying to learn, fans lose patience and then when the local media starts reporting stuff like "the organization has lost faith in him" and he hears that stuff, it makes the situation worse. Some people let it role off their backs, others can't. Sean Burroughs can't. So the change will be good for him.

About the trade - I LOVE IT! Randa will be a huge impact as long as he doesn't get the "can't make productive outs" disease that this team lately seems to be infected. :hmm: But I do believe he will be the much needed spark.

Chick and Germano are good young pitchers. The Reds will be happy with them eventually. I just hope they give them the time they need to grow and learn. Don't rush them. Germano has great stuff and was brilliant in moments but then he'd get rocked and couldn't handle the situation afterwards. He's 22yrs, he'll get better. Travis Chick, 21yrs, has also shown good stuff - he has worked out of dangerous situations but he's young. So I think the Reds got two really good solid prospects as long as they let them grow and learn properly.
