Padres, Mariners swap catchers Ojeda, Olivo

SportsTicker

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres remained active before the trade deadline and took further steps to fill a gap at the catcher position.

The Padres on Saturday acquired catcher Miguel Olivo from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for catcher Miguel Ojeda and minor league pitcher Nathanel Mateo.

Olivo, who is hitting .151 (23-for-152) with five home runs and 18 RBI this year, will serve as one of the replacements for injured starter Ramon Hernandez. Hernandez underwent surgery on his left wrist Friday and will miss up to six weeks.

The Padres acquired catcher David Ross from Pittsburgh on Thursday and finalized a deal that sent Phil Nevin, who appeared at catcher twice in the last week, to Texas earlier Saturday.

In parts of four major league seasons with the Mariners and Chicago White Sox, the 27-year-old Olivo has hit .218 with 25 homers and 90 RBI in 270 games. He split 2004 between Seattle and Chicago, batting .233 with career highs of 13 home runs and 40 RBI.

"We like his arm, we like his defensive skills," San Diego general manager Kevin Towers said. "He's a plus runner too, this guy can run."

Olivo has stolen 14 bases in the majors and had 29 at Class AA Birmingham in 2002.

"He might be one of the quicker guys that we'll have on our club. It's not often that you have catchers who are average or above-average runners, and he can really run."

Ojeda, a 30-year-old who played in the Mexican League from 1995-2003, hit .137 (10-for-73) in 43 games with San Diego before being optioned to Class AAA Portland of the Pacific Coast League on July 7. He is a .224 hitter with 12 homers and 54 RBI in 166 major league games.

Mateo was 3-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 47 games out of the bullpen for

Class AA Mobile of the Southern League. The 24-year-old, who returned to professional baseball in 2004 after a four-year absence, tossed 22 2/3 scoreless innings over 20 appearances from May 1-June 17.

If Olivo can learn to raise his average to at least .270,the Pads are going to have themselves one helluva catcher for the next 4-5 years.

For a catcher, this guy can fly.

Olivo has all the tools. I have no idea why he never put it together this year. I'm just glad to see him gone. The black hole offense he was providing was killing me.
