Buster Olney just confirmed it on WEPN (ESPN Radio's NYC affiliate).
As for perjury, this should be interesting.

doesnt have to. stuff you buy from GNC can (and most likely will) put you in the positive test category.
so unless they say he took an anabolic steroid, he cant be hit up for perjury.

You'd think that players would be extra careful about what they put into or on their bodies these days. I've heard some people making excuses for Spanish-speaking players getting caught because of the language barrier, but Raffy has no such excuse.
Damn... Things just get worse for the O's every day. This is a huge dissapointment. Not sure what to say about this. All I can say this is a bit dissapointing. I'll just wait to see what Rafael has to say, if he address the public.

I just heard the O's will have a press conference this afternoon. If anyone down in Ballamer can hear it, can they give us a play-by-play?

Aug. 1 Rafael Palmeiro (1B) Bal was suspended by Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday for 10 days for violating baseball's drug policy, according to USA Today's Hal Bodley. Palmeiro is hitting .280 with 18 home runs and 59 RBI this season and recently surpassed 3,000 career hits. He testified before Congress on March 17 that he'd never used steroids. Palmeiro's suspension began on Monday.

:sigh:
The news of the Baltimore Orioles just keeps getting better and better. :(
If he did take it unintentionally, as something in a supplement, then I also think he made a big mistake by not familiarizing himself with the ingredients in the supplements he was taking.

No info about when this test took place, whether before the congressional hearings, or after. Also, the news was not released and the suspension was not handed down until the player's association and a panel reviewed the test.
It wasn't clear whether Palmeiro's test was taken before or after he spoke before the congressional panel. Anyone who lies under oath could be potentially subject to criminal perjury charges; Congress has the option of referring the case to the Justice Department, which would decide whether it's worth pursuing.
The players association challenged the positive test in secret proceedings, and the penalty was held in abeyance until arbitrator Shyam Das decided Monday not to overturn it.
Palmeiro will lose $163,934 of his $3 million salary during the suspension. Because the penalty was delayed, it meant at least one member of baseball's management-union medical panel initially found there was a "reasonable basis" for the challenge.
The panel, in a statement released by the union, said Palmeiro could not prove the positive test "was not due to his fault or negligence." It also concluded, however, that Palmeiro's testimony was "quite compelling," and it did not find reason to believe he was lying.
*sigh*
I think I'll spend the night watching movies on Lifetime. :sigh: Something not having to do with baseball at all.

Anything good on Lifetime? I haven'y seen that new Dive from Claussen's pond yet.
I don't know, man...
Palmeiro said he took steriods unintentionally? But, come on, we know Palmeiro not stupid. I don't know, but this is really bad for Palmeiro's career. The steriod cloud return over baseball. People are going to start pointing finger. Don't want to be a Yankee hater, but people might be pointing fingers at Giambi next.
Urg, this steriod business is so troublesome...
Oh, to top it off. The O's finished getting swept by the White Sox. Things are just going downhill for the O's.

I wouldn't be surprised at all. I was actually thinking to myself the other day, after watching highlights of the game when he hit those two homers, that he might be back on the juice again. He had a huge month of July with 14 homeruns and you can see he's starting to get a little bigger again.
Then again, he may not. But he, just like Sosa, Bonds, now Palmeiro, and all the others, will always have this hanging over their head.

The difference between Giambi/Sosa/Bonds/McGwire/Sheffield and Palmeiro is that Palmeiro is the only one who actually tested positive. Giambi, Bonds and Sheffield testified before a grand jury but, since grand jury testimony is supposed to be private (it can only be discussed in public by the witness himself) and, since none of them has actually told us what he said during his testimony, then TECHNICALLY, we have no evidence at all that any of them has done anything wrong. The only person we have actual evidence on is Palmeiro.
Personally? I firmly believe Giambi is doing something, even today. But there's no proof.
