Bowa suspended for one game

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies Manager Larry Bowa was suspended for one regular-season game and fined Thursday as a result of his ejection during a March 9 game against Cleveland.
Bowa will appeal the decision.
Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of discipline, made the decision, citing the manager's "inappropriate conduct toward the umpires before and after his ejection in the top of the first inning."
Bowa will be permitted to manage Philadelphia's opener at Atlanta April 1, then will be suspended for the second game, at Turner Field April 3.
In a split-squad game against Cleveland, Bowa charged from the dugout, was promptly ejected but stayed to argue for another 90 seconds. Bowa later said he was upset at the umpire's failure to call strikes on two checked swings.
"They missed two calls in the first inning and cost the kid four runs," Bowa said after that game. "Make the calls. (David) Coggin threw the ball unbelievable. It should have been a 1-2-3 first inning."
Schmidt returns as special hitting instructor
The greatest third baseman in Phillies history is returning to camp as a special hitting instructor.
Mike Schmidt, whose first coaching stint lasted from Feb. 25 to March 7, will rejoin the team March 26 and stay for the rest of Spring Training. He will also visit the team during select home and away series, totaling about 12 games, General Manager Ed Wade said. The visits are tentatively scheduled.
"Everyone seemed very pleased with the way things went, including Mike, and we had hoped that we would be able to do something that would extend the relationship or broaden it," Wade said. "We had begun talking before we left and fortunately we were hoping to fit it into his schedule.
"We thought he mixed very well with our big-league staff and also felt that there a number of players who connected with him while he was here."
Among those players was Pat Burrell, who has said this spring that Schmidt helped his swing.
Wade said he gave Schmidt a 'pretty broad menu' of things he could get involved in, including spending time in the farm system, or learning about the scouting department, and will leave it up to the Hall-of-Fame third baseman to choose.
"When you talk about wanting to continue to have your alumni participate and you get a guy who's probably right at the top of that list and willing to spend time trying to help us be better, it's exciting," said Wade.
