Only the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals this season have had better television ratings than the Twins among baseball's 30 major league clubs, the Twins reported Monday. The Twins have averaged slightly more than a 7.0 TV rating, which is an increase of more than 50 percent from last season.

Why didn't Marion Barber play more in the preseason opener for the Cowboys?

• Ex-Gophers running back Marion Barber III caught one pass for the Dallas Cowboys, but didn't have a rush in their exhibition opener against Arizona.

Interesting that the Twins would be the third most watch team on TV considering Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees, Braves, Astros, Mariners, and Cardinals always have great TV ratings.

That's interesting. I think the Cowboys got lot of RBs out there so it's tough for him to get playing time. I hope he does well for Dallas since he is a Gopher.

Twins attract many on TV
Only the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals this season have had better television ratings than the Twins among baseball's 30 major league clubs, the Twins reported Monday. The Twins have averaged slightly more than a 7.0 TV rating, which is an increase of more than 50 percent from last season.
There are several possible factors for the dramatic increase: the early re-signings of pitcher Johan Santana and Brad Radke, some unseasonable spring weather, no playoffs for the Timberwolves, the lack of a Wild season and three straight Twins division championships entering the year.
• Chris Weinke, the Heisman Trophy winner from St. Paul, completed 6 of 9 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown, without an interception, as the backup quarterback for the Carolina Panthers against the Washington Redskins last weekend. Weinke, 33, is in the last year of a five-year contract.
• Despite not renewing the contracts of Richard Park and Andrew Brunette, the Wild should be an improved offensive team this year. Brian Rolston, who signed a month before the NHL lockout, and recently acquired Todd White combined for 119 points (52 goals and 67 assists) while Park and Brunette totaled 70 points (32 goals and 38 assists) during their last seasons.
• The Timberwolves remain in the trading market with center Michael Olowokandi.
• New Vikings owner Zygi Wilf says he's still looking for a home in the Twin Cities area.
• Ex-Gophers running back Marion Barber III caught one pass for the Dallas Cowboys, but didn't have a rush in their exhibition opener against Arizona.
• ESPN's retaining of the NHL's broadcasting rights for more than $100 million for two years, expected to take place this week, probably would eliminate any chance the Wild had of hiring Gary Thorne as their TV play-by-play voice.
• While Sunday's round of the PGA Championship was in progress at Baltusrol, Tim Herron, who missed the cut in the tournament, was at Wayzata Country Club, practicing putting with instructor Gerald McCullaugh.
• Edinburgh USA's Don Berry and Troy Burne's Dave Tentis, who both missed the cut in the PGA Championship, left Monday for the Wilderness at Fortune Bay course for three days of preliminary qualifying to try for next year's PGA Championship.
• Cole Aldridge, the 6-foot-11, 240-pound Bloomington Jefferson star, is back from Colorado Springs, where the NCAA held a conference for the country's top high school basketball players to advise them on the rights and wrongs of college recruiting. Aldridge was also in San Diego the other day with 19 of the nation's top prep prospects.
• Phil Archer from St. Paul had a sack and two tackles as a rookie linebacker for the San Diego Chargers against the Green Bay Packers last week.
• Ex-Twin Harmon Killebrew will be the keynote speaker and Gophers public address announcer Dick Jonckowski will emcee at the American Legion World Series banquet Thursday in Rapid City, S.D.
• Jason Litzau, 22, the undefeated (15-0) super featherweight boxer from St. Paul, heads for Chicago on Friday for promotional work with Main Events and is still hoping to fight next in October, perhaps at Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
• Ex-Twin Ron Coomer, who does some broadcasting work for the Twins, was so impressive during some recent broadcasting for the White Sox in his hometown Chicago that he could end up doing some White Sox and Cubs games this season.
• Incoming Minneapolis South girls basketball freshman guard Tayler Hill is profiled in Sports Illustrated for Kids' new issue.
• Former Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont champion jockey Pat Day, who won more than 8,000 races before retiring, will be at Canterbury Park this weekend to help raise money for a new chapel at the Shakopee track.
• Ex-Viking Alan Page of the Minnesota Supreme Court will be honored by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in December as a recipient of its Distinguished American Award.
• Maplewood's Eddie Johnson, who turned 87 last weekend, finished first in the 50-meter backstroke in the ages 84-to-89 division in the U.S. Masters national swim competition in Mission Viejo, Calif. The former Johnson High state champion also finished runner-up in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle races.
Charley Walters' column appears Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. He can be reached at cwalters@pioneerpress.com.
• New Timberwolves guard Marko Jaric's annual guaranteed salaries that total $37,875,000 over six years: 2005-06, $5 million; 2006-07, $5.525 million; 2007-08, $6.05 million; 2008-09, $6.575 million; 2009-10, $7.1 million; 2010-11, $7.625 million.
• New Vikings owner Zygi Wilf can expect a game ball when his team hosts Tampa Bay in the regular-season opener Sept. 11 at the Metrodome. Wilf didn't receive a game ball after his team's victory over Kansas City on Friday because game balls aren't awarded for exhibition games.
• As did the Vikings in dumping wideout Randy Moss on Oakland, the Timberwolves came out ahead by dispatching Sam Cassell to the Clippers. Both teams are better off without the headaches, regardless of what they received in return.
• When drafted by the Vikings, Moss wore jersey No. 18 before switching to No. 84. In Oakland, he wears No. 18. Vikings wideout Ryan Hoag, initially drafted by Oakland, now wears No. 18.
• Troy Burne golf professional Dave Tentis, who shot 77-72 and missed the cut by five strokes at the PGA Championship, on champion Phil Mickelson's play at Baltusrol: "He was smart. He changed to a different driver because Baltusrol has narrow, 25-yard fairways that put a premium on driving accuracy. He gave up quite a bit in distance to gain accuracy. Me, I need to drive it straighter."
I just posted what was said about that. It would be intresting though to find out all the standings......

Keep in mind Charley Walters embellishes lot of stuff. This guy is a liar half the time. I can cite some of the garbage that he spew for years.
Twins have good TV Ratings, but to say that they are the third most watch team on TV is a strech.
