Well the fun times ended for one night as the six-game winning streak was over this evening at Minneapolis. Matt Guerrier, who has been awesome lately like the rest of the relievers, had a bad 10th inning. He got hit hard and Richie Sexson's grand slam off Matt put the finishing touches of this game.
I did not think Gardenhire had a great night of managing. First off, why the heck he took J.C. out as the tenth inning was underaway. J.C. did not even throw a pitch in that inning. For some reason, Gardy just changed his mind and started changing his pitcher. Did Guerrier warmed up in the bottom of the ninth? I don't think so from watching the game. Matty seemed suprised to even enter the tenth. He clearly wasn't ready to pitch and it showed there. I was befuddled by this move. I had no idea what Gardy was thinking. I am no J.C. fan and I didn't mind seeing Matt Guerrier out there. With that said, why change the pitcher when Guerrier did not warm up in the bottom of the ninth and why change out of the blue. Gardy also changed the pitcher in the ninth with two outs. Jesse was looking good in the ninth and then he brings J.C. to get the final out. Jesse did not looked happy when he was taken out and I don't blame him. Jesse could have finished the inning there. J.C. got it done. It's moves like this that makes me rip Gardy and it's moves like this that make Gardy so inept when it comes to making decisions. I swear Gardy can drive me crazy.
Kyle pitched great. He had that one bad inning in the seventh as he gave up couple of meatballs to Sexson, who homered to cut the deficit to 2-1 and Beltre, who homered to tie the game. I thought Kyle got tired from that. As great as Kyle is pitching, he is not a guy that can go deep in the game like Carlos or Johan so it was no suprise that he got tired in the end.
Still, it was another great outing. I like what I saw in Kyle. He got out of jams. He worked fast. He is doing everything right.
Matty Lecroy continues his hot hitting as he drove in two runs to give the Twins the lead. Boy it's good to see Lecroy continue to do well.
That kid, Felix Hernandez (Seattle's starter) was fantastic. He did a very good job outside of that first inning. He struck out nine Twins. He was simply fantastic. For him to do this at 18 is simply impressive. Seattle got themselves a special pitcher for many more years to come. He is their Johan. I love watching this kid pitch. I have seen his four starts and they all have been great. He is schedule to go up against the Yankees next week. I love to see him go up against that Yankee lineup. I hope Seattle does not do anything to ruin his arm like the Cubs have done with Prior and Wood. I thought the Twins approach to him was good. He just got it done.
Lew Ford was fantastic defensively. He did a great job robbing Sexson of a HR in the first. He has held on to his own defensively at CF with Torii out.
It's a dissapointing loss, but the Twins gotta move on and forget this one. They gotta go get em tommorow afternoon. They need to take three out of four. They can't go backwards now.
