View Full Version : Keeper Possibilities

I'm in a keeper league with some friends and this is our 5th season. I've won the league the last two years and after residing in 9th or 10th place most of the season, I've risen to 4th. Winning for a 3rd consecutive year is almost out of reach, but there is still a slim chance. My quandry is this:

Miguel Tejada has been a keeper SS of mine for 4 years and a big reason why I've been successsful. This season I picked up Jhonny Peralta so now I have 2 of the best SS's around. I could trade Tejada and pick up Scott Kazmir and Amando Benitez. Kazmir has keeper value and Benitez would probably provide me with some saves I desperately need down the stretch.

We keep 5 players for the next season. The most likely candidates on my team are:

Tejeda or Peralta
Joe Mauer
Hank Blalock
Brad Lidge
Mark Prior
Ben Sheets
Scott Kazmir (if I make the trade)

I also have Justin Morneau, Andruw Jones, Chris Capuano and Danny Haren as possible keeper candidates. As I stand now, I'm leaning toward keping Mauer, Tejada, Prior, Sheets and Lidge. If I make the trade (do you think I should?) Kazmir and Peralta get thrown into the keeper mix. I've never kept 4 pitchers and only one position player but Kazmir offers so much potential that I'm considering it. Blalock is also key here as I weigh him against Mauer (catching is thin as everyone knows).

What do you guys think?

Dale, I guess a lot would depend on the type of league you're in (cumulative versus head-to-head) and how much of a chance you think you have to finish #1 this season. If you have a shot, then make the deal and go for it. Otherwise, I might wait until offseason and make a trade then for next year. Can y'all trade for extra draft picks or something like that?

The only shot I have is a long one. No off-season trades and we designate 5 players off our roster to keep sometime in Jan. I don't think I'll make the trade since I have Prior, Lidge and probably Sheets that I'll keep (can't see keeping more than 3 pitchers and I'm not sure I'd keep Kazmir over Prior or Sheets anyway. But thanks for replying Willie  , I guess there aren't as many fantasy experts in here as I origionally thought:notme:

Looks like you're going to kick my ass in the head-to-head this week:D

If it were me I would keep Tejada, Lidge, Jones, Blalock for sure... Then I would look at one of your starters to keep... Capuano has had a great year as has Haren... I would consider Capuano or Prior as the 5th guy.... I really dont think of Kazmir having much fantasy value yet to the point of making a trade for him... Peralta is a nice player but this is the 1st year he has been good at all.. Is he a 1 year wonder or will he keep it up for years to come? Tough to bank on him when you have a stud in Tejada who is AWESOME every year....

Good luck...

I don't make that deal. Tejada is too valuable. Peralta has had a great season but remember that his teammate, Martinez, was coming off a great year in 2004 and really struggled for the first half of this season.

Tejada, Lidge, Jones, Blalock, and Mauer/Sheets are on top of that list for me. I am not a Prior guy since he gets hurt all the time. To be honest, I protect few SP, the injury risk and inconsistancy is just too great. Mauer will only get better - I expect him to be hitting in the .320s soon, with more power.

Keep Tejada, like most people have said. Tejada has been great and I doubt his number will go down in up and coming years. He's a big keeper. While Kazmir is promising, he's not worth Tejada. Benitez is getting old in my eyes, so he's kinda worthless in such a deal. I think he might have 1 or 2 years max. I think his value became over-rated after a great 2004 season.

I say Tejeda, Mauer, Sheets, Prior and Lidge. Lol, same list you got. Though, the only person off this list would be Blalock. Remember, Prior been injury prone, so maybe replace him for Blalock? Up to you. Blalock not having a amazing season this year, but he's putting up some good numbers nonetheless.

Mauer will get better than V-tek in the up and coming years. Soon he'll become probably the best catcher in both leagues. He's got a bright future. So, he's a big time keeper. A catcher that puts up quite productive numbers.

He's young, too. So, he won't break down like Mike or Jorge has. Mike being Piazza and Jorge being Posada.
