Baseball-Orioles send Sosa home to rehabilitate toe
NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Baltimore Orioles slugger Sammy Sosa was sent home by the team Wednesday to rehabilitate his toe injury that has kept him on disabled list since Aug. 28.
Sosa was excused from joining the team on its road trip to Seattle and Texas so he could go home to Florida, and it was not known when he would return to the team.
The 36-year-old slugger has endured a miserable season since joining the Orioles in the off-season and has a lesion on his big right toe that he says has been bothering him all year.
Sosa is hitting just .221 for the season with 14 home runs and 45 RBI, well below his career averages. He was mired in a 5-for-50 slump before going on the disabled list and last played Aug. 25.
"We talked about his toe (and) rather than to keep trying to push it ... we decided to give it the time to get healthy again," Orioles executive vice president Jim Beattie said.
Orioles interim manager Sam Perlozzo said he expected Sosa back in the lineup sometime before the end of the regular season.
