Baseball-Burrell, Howard power Phillies to big win

NEW YORK, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Pat Burrell and Ryan Howard both hit two-run homers as the Philadelphia Phillies scored a crucial 12-5 win over the Florida Marlins in National League play Friday in Philadelphia.

Snapping a five-game losing streak, the Phillies moved to within 1 1/2 games of the NL wild card-leading Houston Astros, who lost at Milwaukee.

Florida remained a half-game behind the Astros in the NL wild card, losing for the first time in four games.

The Marlins had a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but the Phillies scored five runs in the third and later added four in the sixth to pull away.

Burrell had a two-run double in the third and scored on Howard's two-run homer. Kenny Lofton added a run-scoring double in the inning for Philadelphia.

Burrell hit his homer in the sixth and wound up with four RBI, while Utley had a single, a double and a triple, scored two runs and drove in another. Bobby Abreu had two hits, two runs scored and drove in a run.

Cory Lidle (10-10) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits over five innings and got the win.

A.J. Burnett (12-10) allowed five runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.

Juan Pierre had three hits and drove in two runs for the Marlins, while Jeff Conine also had three hits and scored a run.

In Washington, Vinny Castilla homered as the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 8-6.

Gary Majewski (3-3) pitched one inning for the win. Chad Cordero pitched one inning for his 44th save.

John Foster (4-2) got one out, allowing two runs on one hit and walking one to take the loss. Andruw Jones hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for the Braves.

In St. Louis, Jason Marquis pitched eight solid runs as the Cardinals beat the New York Mets 3-2.

Marquis (12-13) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on eight hits, walking one and striking out four. Jason Isringhausen pitched one inning for his 35th save.

Jae Seo (7-2) pitched eight innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out five to take the loss.

In Milwaukee, Damian Miller hit a two-run homer as the Brewers beat the Houston Astros 7-4.

Doug Davis (10-10) pitched five innings, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on six hits, walking two and striking out six for the win. Derrick Turnbow pitched one inning for his 30th save and J.J. Hardy also homered for the Brewers.

Roger Clemens (11-7) pitched three innings, allowing five runs on five hits, walking five and striking out two to take the loss. Jason Lane homered for the Astros.

In Denver, Chad Tracy hit a three-run homer as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 7-1.

In Cincinnati, Jason Bay hit two homers and drove in four runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Reds 8-4.

In San Francisco, Matt Cain pitched a two-hitter in just his third major league start as the Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1.

And in Los Angeles, Ramon Hernandez hit a three-run homer as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 3-1.
