Twins' Lohse, Gardenhire Mend Fences

CLEVELAND (AP) - Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire and right-hander Kyle Lohse settled their differences Friday before the Twins opened an important three-game series against the Indians.

``We had a long talk for about 25-30 minutes like two adults and everything is straightened out,'' Gardenhire said.

Lohse said he agreed it was a productive meeting and that he expects to take his regular turn in the rotation Monday night in Detroit.

``I'm glad we sat down and talked, cleared the air, and we are all ready to just get back to playing baseball,'' he said. ``Gardy and I are just fine.''

On Tuesday night, Lohse damaged the door to Gardenhire's office with a baseball bat after being pulled from a game after only two innings. He reportedly injured a finger in the tirade, but threw a bullpen session on Friday and said he felt fine.

He wasn't as upbeat Tuesday, when he blasted Gardenhire to reporters after yielding five runs and four hits over two innings.

``I would have liked to have somebody stand behind me and say: 'We've got your back. Go out there and shut them down from here on,''' Lohse said then. ``But that didn't happen today, so whatever.''

That upset Gardenhire, who fired back Wednesday: ``Right now, pride can go out the window. It's about winning. I've had his back for three years.''

On Friday, Gardenhire attributed Lohse's outburst to a competitive player becoming frustrated while trying his best to help the Twins stay in the hunt for a wild-card playoff berth.

``Kyle was apologetic and that's all I cared about,'' Gardenhire said. ``Things were not handled very good in this situation by all parties involved, but there's been a lot of stress trying to stay in the race.

``We could all do a better job of handling composure.''

Lohse is 8-12 with a 4.36 ERA this season for the three-time defending AL Central champion Twins, who began play Friday 5 1/2 games behind AL wild-card leader Cleveland.

They mend fences right now, but don't think this will be forgotten from either sides. Kyle had to apologize if he ever had any sort of credibility in store.

I thought the Twins did the wrong thing by not suspended him for the year. He cross the line breaking the manager's door. Could you imagine if you, I, or anyone did this type of stuff in our occupation? Kyle Lohse should have not gotten away with this.
