Philadelphia Phillies Organization Report

SportsTicker

Even though all of Philadelphia's minor league affiliates concluded their seasons with losing records, there were several noteworthy performances by individual players. OF Chris Roberson and RHP Robinson Tejeda have been named as the recipients of the 2005 Paul Owens Award as the best position player and pitcher in the minor league system. Roberson spent the year with Class AA Reading and set a club record for hits in a season with 172, which led the Eastern League. Following the season, Roberson was named the Eastern League Rookie of the Year. Tejeda went 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA in five starts for Class AAA Scranton-Wilkes-Barre and had 28 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old was called up to the majors in early May and has gone 4-3 in 24 games (13 starts) to help Philadelphia remain in contention for the NL Wild Card. ... Another Red Barons player won an International League award this season. After OF Shane Victorino became Scranton's first league MVP, SS Danny Sandoval became the first Red Baron to win the batting title with a .331 average. What made his accomplishment more amazing is that he trailed Norfolk's Brian Daubach by 18 points during the final week of the season before Daubach slumped badly. Sandoval also missed the team's final series of the season in Pawtucket to fly home for the birth of his first child.
