Now that the Mets got rid of Koo, can they now get rid of Takatsu, Matsui, Ishii, and Looper? Maybe send all of them to Japan for a bag of used baseballs.

Mets Call Up Infielder Anderson Hernandez

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Mets purchased infielder Anderson Hernandez's contract from Triple-A Norfolk and designated left-hander Dae-Sung Koo for assignment on Saturday.

With the fading Mets all but out of contention in the NL wild-card race, Hernandez figures to get some playing time at second base the rest of the way and a chance to impress the team heading into next season.

New York has gotten little production at second base this year from the combination of Kaz Matsui and Miguel Cairo. If the team is unable to upgrade the position for 2006, there could be an opening in spring training.

Matsui, on a career-best 12-game hitting streak, might be sidelined for a while because of a sore right hamstring, and utility player Chris Woodward is bothered by a stiff calf, prompting the Mets to bring up Hernandez.

``We need bodies,'' manager Willie Randolph said. ``He's here basically because Kaz got hurt.''

Hernandez was greeted warmly by teammates in the clubhouse on his first day in the big leagues but was not in the starting lineup against the Atlanta Braves.

``He hasn't played in a week, so I don't think it would be fair to throw him in there today,'' Randolph said.

Acquired from Detroit in January for backup catcher Vance Wilson, the 22-year-old Hernandez converted from shortstop to second base this season and had a breakout year at the plate.

He split the season between Double-A Binghamton and Norfolk, batting .316 with nine homers, 54 RBIs and 35 stolen bases. He also hit 20 doubles and scored 80 runs.

``I thought I was going home on Monday, but they called me last night and told me I was coming up,'' Hernandez said. ``It has been a great year for me, my best year - and now this happens.''

Koo had a 3.91 ERA in 33 relief appearances during his first season with the Mets. The team has 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors.
