I heard that the Mets might be wanting to talk with Billy Wagner. So maybe Looper will not be a Met much longer. I just can't believe that Wagner would be the answer though, I'm not completely sold on him either.
I still think the Mets haven't had a decent closer since Benitez. Although what about looking inside the organization for a closer? Any ideas? I kinda like the idea of Zambrano - who like Izzy is good for a few innings but not as a starter. He throws hard enough to be a closer.

zambrano? dude walks too many people and doesnt strike enough people out.
Wagner is also quite old.
Zambrano does walk far too many batters. I don't he would be effective if he was converted to a closer. It's best to have him as a starter or a long relief pitcher.
Mets do need to do something about Looper and Takatsu, because they both stink and blow far too many games. I was never high on Looper or Takatsu.

Wagner just turned 34:notme:
I don't really consider that too old for a closer that only pitches 70-80 innings a year....
He still has a good 4 or 5 seasons left in him IMO..
Closers seem to have a longer shelf-life in the game.. Eckersley, Franco, Lee, Fingers, Hernandez, Mesa, to name a few all were still effective into their late 30's or early 40's....
Also, I am not a HUGE fan of Takatsu but the dude has only pitched in 7 games for us and his era is 1.69... He was having a rough year in Chicago this season but last season he pitched great sporting an era of 2.31 with a .98 WHIP, which is outstanding...
I thought Wagner was thinking about retirement earlier this season? Maybe it was Lieberthal...?
I still don't always look at stats all the time. If a pitcher come in with runners on and can't get the job, he's not all that effective. While it's not completely the relief pitcher's fault, I always thought it was their job to come in the game and relieve the last pitcher and take care of business. Similar to my thoughts on Timlin, who allows a butt load of runner to score, but his ERA doesn't take the shot.

I think Wagner would be a great solution. The Phillies could afford to let him walk, since they picked up Ugi when Billy was hurt. But listening to Willie before tonight's game, he sounds like he wants Blooper back next year. NOOOOO!!!
I can't see Zambrano closing. As said, he just doesn't have the control. I think Seo or even Heilman would be more effective, but I doubt if they'd be interested in closing. Maybe Heath Bell.
But I think the Wilpons should go after Wagner.

Hmmmm....... I'm just remembering something. I think BJ Ryan is a free agent at the end of the season.
As much as I love him on the Orioles, if they can't wrap him up........ man, I would love, love, love to see the big guy on the Mets.
Yikes. Whatta thought.
