WASHINGTON -- A "banged up" Pedro Martinez will probably be shut down for the rest of the season, New York Mets manager Willie Randolph said Friday.

Martinez is next set to start Tuesday, and Randolph said: "If we're mathematically eliminated by then, then he definitely won't pitch."

The Mets were 75-77 heading into Friday night's game at Washington, last in the NL East and eight games behind Houston in the wild-card standings with 10 games left in the season.

"We have to look at the big picture, and we have to be wise in how we handle not only him but any player," general manager Omar Minaya said. "The big picture is we want Pedro pitching for us the next couple of years."

Martinez is 15-8 with a 2.82 ERA and has thrown 217 innings in his first season in New York. He signed a $53 million, four-year contract with the Mets in the offseason after helping the Red Sox win the World Series.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw 244 innings in 2004, including the postseason.

He's dealt with a variety of injuries this season, the most bothersome right now being a toe problem. Minaya said there was nothing that would require surgery, and both he and Randolph referred to Martinez as "banged up."

"There's nothing wrong with his arm. It's probably a combination of a lot of things and the fact that over the last two years he's thrown a lot of innings," Randolph said. "It's nothing serious to the point where you have to worry about anything. It's just a matter of when you have an investment like him, you want to make sure you don't run the risk."

In his last outing, a 2-1 loss to Florida on Thursday, Martinez was on a pitch count and left the game after five innings and 75 pitches.

"I'm OK for this time of year," Martinez said after that game. "This is the time of year where you need actually a little rest. I've pitched a lot. Willie's my man. He knows how I am when I'm totally fine and when I am not."

Randolph said he wasn't sure who would take Martinez's slot in the rotation if the right-hander doesn't pitch again.

Both the manager and GM praised Martinez's performance this season, saying he's pitched as well or better than expected.

Why are the Mets making this decision is beyond me? He is healthy enough to pitch to finish the last two starts this season. I don't like this one bit. He is being paid to pitch so he ought to do his job. I just don't like the fact that the team should shut someone down because they are afraid he will get hurt next year. That's not right thinking. That's like the Twins shutting down a healthy Johan Santana for the season because the team is done. Unless Pedro is hurt which he is not, he ought to finish up the season.

Unless his team is in the playoffs, Pedro always goes home early.

It's clear from his last few starts that something is bothering Pedro. I don't think it's his arm but something is wrong with him and it's pointless to push him in two starts that mean absolutely nothing. That's why. I'm glad they had enough sense to shut him down. He's done what we needed him to do this year. Let him rest up and get ready for next season.

I actually agree with Gina. If the games don't mean anything, why tempt fate and risk injury. He's putched more innings in a regular season this year than he has since 1998 or 99. He's done a fine job this year. Let him rest.

But this brings up a question. If he's this "banged up" now, how much can he bring to the table next year if we need him in September and October? He'll be two years older than when he went to the WS.

We are out of it so who cares if he pitches or not?

He has won 2 of his last 3 including a complete game shutout 2 starts ago so I am not sure what some are seeing as far as it being clear something is wrong with him:notme:

He had 1 bad start on August 31st... Take out that start he didnt give up a run in 3 of his last 6 starts.....

The Astros and their fans care. If he's hurt, he's hurt. But if he or the club is just mailing it in because the Mets are out of it and he's just 'banged up,' that's not cool. The Astros close the 2006 season against the Braves. If the Mets have a 1-game lead over the ATL's for the NL East when that final series comes up and Houston's out of it, don't y'all want the Astros to play the season out?

Either way, whether Pedro pitches or not this week, Go Mets! Beat Those Phillies!
