Wow! I just got home, so I just turned on the game, so I'm not sure if it was Cairo's throw to Wright......... but, anyhoo....... somebody threw to Wright to get Wilkerson, who was running, out, and he overthrew. Wright ran for the ball and quickly came up with it and threw to home, because Mike was right there on the line in front of the plate, and he leaped up and caught the ball and came down tagging. Wilkerson's foot was about a foot from the plate.

It was beautifully timed, and Piazza looked incredibly agile making it. It was perfect!!! :hail: :\

(It was the last out in the bottom of the7th.)

Score was 4-5, and David Wright just launched one that went over Wilkerson's head, so it's now 5-5.

HOLY MOLY!!!! MIKE JACOBS JUST CRANKED ONE OVER THE RIGHT FIELD FENCE!!! Man. I love this guy!

6-5, our wonderful Metsies. Top of the 8th.

:cheer:

2 HR's, one to DEAD CENTER...in RFK, one gorgeous leap...and all at the age of 37. So much for being washed up.

Btw, I don't think the question is doesn't HE want to do that here for one more year. I think the question is doesn't OMAR want to see him do it. My take is Mike DOES want to stay and retire a Met. Omar on the other hand seems perfectly willing to let him walk after next Sunday.

I'm getting awfully good at being Devil's advocate. ;)

Omar has, for the most part, been right on the money when he's let players walk. He was 100% correct to trade Mike Stanton. 100% correct to dump Al Leiter and John Franco. Mike has done great this year. But he'll be 37 1/2 by Opening Day next year and, as all of us over the age of 35 know all too well, it gets harder and harder to do the same things we used to do and it takes longer and longer to recover from doing them. Will he be able to keep up this level of performance by then?

Personally, I'd love to see Mike stay. But what happens in '07, when he's pushing 39? Who can we bring in then? There is a decent crop of FA catchers (including Hernandez and Molina) this year, but I'm not up on who will be available after the '06 season. Does anyone else know?

I'm just talking about one year. I think he'll be ready to retire after that, so let him retire as a Met. He can catch 50 or 60 games, come in off the bench for 50 or 60 games, and groom Castro to become an every day player after that.

Anyone in the streets could have done that too. It was very obvious that Stanton, Leiter, and Franco had to go. This was an easy decision to make.

I don't think Ramon Castro can handle being an everyday catcher. He was getting obviously tired, especially his bat, when he was playing everyday for Mike.

Mike is gone, Omar wants Latin players. And I doubt the Padres will give Ramon Hernandez and agent the money he will command after this season. I know Omar will. Problem is, Ramon did not endear himself to Padre fans when he decided to go against the Padre wishes and get his surgery done just after the All Star break. He is NOT a team player like I would want. Don't get me wrong, he has so much talent and he's got a really nice bat, the Pads pitchers love him and he's a super guy on the club. BUT, that one little problem still nags Padre fans. When you're manager questions your commitment to the team and then other teammates do too, saying things like, "well, he has to think about his future" in July, I am very concerned about signing the guy. Believe me, Padre fans are not too upset in letting him go, even with his Sept heroics.
